I ' ' THURSDAY MOBM3Q . MAT 19 ffg' Considerable discussion baa been originated as to the probable effect the European war will hate upon the Shipping mad Breadstuff's interests in this country. The New York press very generally take the ground that no immediate profit is likely to be had out of the war in Euroi. In this part of the Union an opinion the rcTerse of this is entertained, and all the farmers are planting every foot of land they cau possibly cultivate, anticipating high prices for all they can raise, in consequenc e of the war. Should the war terminate speedily, as many surmise, we will have an immense crop, ane not a very great demand for it, except a home demand. At present there is no great amount of Breadstuff's in this country scarcely sufficient to supply the demand. Flour has actually been imported from Europe to supply our wants. It will take a good crop to glut the home market, but we confess we cannot see any great probability of a heavy foreign Hmwi 1. VL l'..r.-(.u WOT Will l.o tin . fined to a small scope of country. Few nien are taken from the plow to serve in the armies. They are generally made up out of the large populations of the immense tit it of Europe, and are composed of a floating t las who have-little else to do but enlist. 0 p The womeu of Europe do a great part t the field labor, and we are not sure, if they were left to cultivate their fiflds undisturbed, but what they vould raise sufficient grain to supply all their actual necessities. It these views be correct, it may be a ell not to count too largely on the European demand for creation hieh price for Breadstuffs. At any rate, it will be well not to j plunge deeper in debt, expecting relief limn an extraordinary crop, and very high prices. In addition to other evils connected with the contest, it will create an unusual fiuroiiean demand for money. This will draw it from our shores, where it is already too scarce. A constant drain of specie will add greatly to the emliarrussmeuts that are likely to occur, under ordinary circumstances. -A scarcity of specie must depre.a the ju ice of grain - I milium Item. A couple of fine churches were opened tu the citizens of Indianapolis on Sunday la L From the descriptions given, they must rival, in lieauty, any within the State limits. The Capital, however it may fall lehind in other matters, excels any city of the same population in the West in the number and magnificence of its churches. A Herman family living alsiiit three and a lialljniles from Indianapolis, was poisoned, by using arsenic instead of soda, in the formation of their biscuit. The husband, wife, and three children were very sick, vomiting quite freely. There is, however, a prospect of their recovery. The following patents were issued to Intlianians for the week ending May 10, each bearing that date : George Tatlock, of Salem, for improvement in raking attachment for harvesting machines. Jai. B. Crist, of Evansville, for improve ment ni grain separators. Stephen Elliott, of Richmond, for improvement in straw cutters. D. S. Fisher, of Mauckport, for improvement in seed planters. Cha8 Learned, of Indianapolis, assignor to himself and (i. P. Stevens, of same place, tor improvement iu seed drill. The Daily Cititen announce?, in the last number, that it is no more. It is to be merged n the " Atlas, " a new paper that is toon to appear at the Capital, under the control of Mr. John Defrees, a veteran editor of this State. The Citizen was a spi ightly little daily, uud we will miss it from our exchange list. We notice that large numbers of applications for license to retail liquor? arc advertised in our exchanges, lu New Alhatn there are forty-two applications. We judge, however, that our city will uot be Ivehind. in the number of licensed grogshop. Tin- Nfv York Tribune contains the following caution to business men in this ountry. It is worthy a careful jiertial : Bat though we may hope not to fan- I badly as those immediately engagt-d in NM4 European strife, and especially may trn-t ut eSt ape its moral CIMMMMMMM c-, vet that it must have a very active and important influence upon our trade, and all the parsaita ot iittlustry among ns, there can nu ijii. lies. KretuLtntl are risiug in value, and barns ami granaries are empty while, loi 1 ho lirat tone, we betiere, in the history of American commerce, Floor h.-ta beu imported from Frame, ami still more is on the way to this Cntinent. Repot is of railroad directors, which come iu at this taou, present the affairs of their Companies iu a worse condition of inactivity and .lelil than the most desponding httd feared. A high and in' rcujiug price of food, and t-ontiuued t ig nation of business are not a prouiee of prosperity; although in some branches of trade there has been a partial revival, and in the ordinary course of evenL, -hould we have a good crop this Summer, a return of better times seemed probable, yet affairs are iu ao critical a condition that even a slight disturbing cause most prove a cheek to the prosperity we have been hoping for. W'e must remember that our i tenuis are too closely interwoven with those of Kurope to admit of the expectation that out of her misfortunes and trials is to come to us greet material gain. It is true, that if we .shall have any breadstutTs to sell next autumn, we are sure of a market, and to get them to market insures iucreased activity to all our internal transportation, and, perhaps, in some degree, to our ships. But the fields bava but just begun to be green with the trope of the next autumn. England, as well as ounelves, has a mercantile marine
lying idle, which will compete with us for the carrying trade of the world, and which Austria has nonavv to interfere with. The.
calculation thai American securities will be ! sought for foreign investment, is not a safe one. The powers at war will need immense sums of money, and will offer, at home, good I investments to capital. American securities j are at a sad discount-avmoral as well as fi- ! nancial abroad ; and war loans will be
held on the Bourse and at the London Exchange in much higher estimation than the stocks or bonds of American railroads. There Is uot likely to be any iufiux of capital into our coffers because foreigners think it is safer here than in their own. What legitimate business may come to us, let us wait for, and be thankful for, but any hope that this is to be largely iucreased by the condition of affairs in Europe will prove fallacious. A speculative fever among us will lead to certain disaster, worse, iu our present critical couditiou, than any we have known before. Though we are not where we shall feel the full force of the gale, we arc on the edge of it, and we have nothing to do but to keep under short and easy sail, and wait for better weather. To shake out our reefs, in the hope of sooner making port, will only lose us our topmasts, and perhaps send us to the liottom ; while, if wc keep all snug, and continue to repair damages, we shall be in good condition to avail ourselves of the smooth sea and pleasant breezes which are sure to come when the hurricane, which will strew the ea with wtrch, 'hull Imve'pttssed away. Silvkr Cave. The Cannelton Reporter pays that a number of gentlemen, last week, visited a cave which is situated on Deer Creek, about five miles uot th west of Cannelton The entrance is on the side of a bluff hill, and is so low that the party were compelled to creep on their hands and knees, lu a few yards, however, the cave became larger and vv hen lighting their candles, several avenues were Met) leading off in different iliiciii.ui The centre one, ouly was explored, and from this also various passage.-' were found branch ing oft' in other directions. The party ventured as far as they dared jw, but fearing that the number of avenue ia might confuse them if thev went too far, returned. The height of the avenues was irregular, masses of clay hnving washed in through the crevices in the roof. The cave lies iu a stratum of blue limestoue immediately below the sand rock. The sides of the cave wre smoothly worn; prohahl by the action of water, resembling in many places rVvjitiaii columns, and as smooth and highly polished as if ju t from the bauds of a skillful workman, it is evident that the i-wve extends for mile, but some labor will be n n wiry to remove the ( lay and debris from the bottom, before a perfect examination ran In made. The tradition of the neighborhood is, that a large amount of coin wa. concealed there iu former time-, and tlie cave has frequently been vi. ii. d by money seekers from abroatl. After tim time SK-nt iu icrambling throiieh the daik j over the fallen recks, the party at bust readied the mouth, and extinguishing their lights, gladly emerged into the ojen air and warm bunshine. This is regarded as a remarkable proof of l the advancement of virtue and domestic happiness in that city. 8 A handsome Canadian girl, dressed from top to toe in men's clothes, was arrested in Ietroit the other day for disregarding the sta'ute made and provided against unmarried ladies wearing pantaloons.
