Ml to work in earned to make our MCMkd annual Diitrut Fair one that Indiana mnv he proud of. ———<>——— STEAM FIRE ENGINES.—A new steam fire engine has been built by the Messrs. Agnew, of Philadelphia, for Memphis. I is to cost, with all its appliances, from $8,000 to $10,000. It is probable the good people of that city will have a jovial time getting a macine of its size and weight to the different parts of the city. A paper of that place suggests the propriety of having stationary engines. and to run only hose reels. This would prove almost as expensive as the steam engines. The additional cost of the hose would fully equal the difference in the cost of the engines. For a city of the size of ours or Memphis—and more anxious for substance than show—small hand engines are the cheapest, and equally effective.— Hand engines are made in Rhode Island and Massachusetts so light that five or six men can run right along with them, and yet are sufficiently powerful to throw a heavy stream of water to the top of our highest buildings. Two or three of these in our city would prove more beneficial than any steam engine. ———<>——— A FtAT.
