EVANSVILLE, IND. ======= WEDNESDAY MORNING...............MAY 4 ========= The Canal. The change in the administration of the canal has caused a remarkable revolution in the feelings of the people along the line in regard to the work. Since they were persuaded that it was to be managed with some care and efficiency for their benefit, it become the "people's work;" they
watch and protect it as their own property, accede to our demand. You may be a The dispatches were immediately iouimu- . ! , ' Uil,.Kll write u sured you can do so without molesting the meated to the President, who seems greatly
A correspondent at Millersburg writes us an account of the interest manifested in that vicinity in the preservation and repair of the canal. He says the people in that neighborhood are keeping watch of the canal as if it were their own; as soon as a leak or a crawfish hole is seen, it is stopped by the citizens. In the case of a recent break in that vicinity, a large number of men left their own labor and affairs and went, volnntarily [sic], to work to arrest and repair the damages, and continued to work till the danger was past and the repair boat, with its crew, arrived to complete what they had begun. He says Mr. J. H. Miller, of Millersburg, deservs [sic] much credit for the public spirit he has manifested in helping on the work, and for the care and labor he bestowed upon the Millersburg Level during the absence of the watchman and repairboat at the breaks above. There are a few "do nothings," our friend writes, at Millersburg, as in other places, who are waiting for the peopre to do the work, in the benefits of which, they intend to get a full share. But the body of the people there are ready to do all for the canal in their power. In a few years, if the canal be maintained in a reliable condition, he thinks the improvement of the country along its line will compel the wolf-catchers to remove their traps back into the hills. ———<>——— We publish, at his request, a second -ardfrom Mr. Kurtz, to correct the errors and supply the omissions of bis first. It is an old and shallow dodge to avoid an accusation by seeking personal controversies and assailing the motives of opponents who are not satisfied with bare assertions We shall ' hae no personal disputes with Mr. Kurtz, for we have neither motive nor occasion for such. We nimply desire him fully to vindicate his character. He should be more anxious to remove all grounds of belief, than to know who believes the accusations of his assailants. If he repudiates Dr. Graff, he will reject, probably, all who do not be- j lieve fully in his immaculate inteirritT. If i , ,- i c t r d v. i trail be a fnend of Jesse D Bright s he Dr. Graff be a friend of Jesse D Brighi ought to be, as a consequence, very lenient in his judgment of official delinquencies for that is a peculiar weakness in that - 1 1 .a 1 i TV -I -1 1 .1 cqooi or politicians, nut ur. mougn ; Ifarewd and adroit politician, is a man of ! candor and truth is more tolerant of the views and conduct of an opponent less j swayedby prejudice and party rancor than any other party leader in the State.
