Harrowing Details of the St. Nicholas Disaster —Statement of James Reed, Pilot. We left Memphis at 4 P. M., last Sunday, and proceeded down the river, without stopping either engine, until we had arrived at the foot of St. Francis Island, about 10 o'clock the same night, at which place the explosion occurred. The Captain was the only person with me in the pilot house at the time. We were both at the wheel, and conversing. I remember distinctly of hearing a report like that of a cannon, and instantaneously felt myself moving through the air. When I recovered my senses, I found myself down among the boilers.— When the steam and smoke cleared away a little, I commenced crawling toward the
roof; in doing so I came across Captain McMullen, lying with this right foot under the hurricane roof, pilot house, and a lot of other rubbish which had been thrown together in one common mass, by the explosion. His right foot and ankle was [sic] wedged in tightly by this heavy mass of lumber.— He hailed me, and 1 stopped to assist him, at the same time I called to the second mate, whom I saw near at hand, to my assistance, and we both tried all the means in our power to release him. While endeavoring to release the Captain one of the striker engineers came to our assistance, but the three of us failed to extricate him from his awful position. The flames were rapidly encroaching upon our territory, and the heat was becoming intolerable. Capt. McMullen begged us to cut his leg off, but we could find no axe nor any other instrument by which to do so, else we would have complied with his wish. We worked at the Captain until the lite drove us away—he begged us all the time to remain by him. We did not leave him until the moment arrived when to remain any longer would have been certain death to all of us without the possibility of relieving the Captain. He was consumed by the flames almost before our eyes. The last words he utterered were, "<My God!> I shall have to burn up." When he saw that he would have to burn he ceased his entreaties for us to remain by him, and bade us seek our own safety. I left Capt .McMullen a few minutes before the others did, and succeeded in reaching the ladies cabin before the fire closed up that way of escape. The others, finding it impossible to follow me, jumped in the river. During the time I was at work trying to save Captain McMulIen, the mate brought the yawl forward to try and put the fire out, but the yawl got filled up with men—deck bands and firemen. While there the yawl also picked up Capt. Ben Glime from, under the ruins, and took him on board the susquehanna. By this time Capt. McMullen was completely enveloped in flames. I reached the ladies' cabin, and found the ladies huddled together, acting frantically, scrcaming for assistance, and weeping bitterly. Mrs. Glime was there, crying aloud for her husband. I told her I had not seen him, which I had not at that time, for I did not learn until afterwards that he had been picked up by the yawl. I told the ladies to go down on the main deck, and get away back to the stern of the boat. I preceded them, and when we reached the deck-room, we had to jump eight feet on to the main deck. When I got them down there, I told them to remain until I could go up and throw the life-boat overboard. 1 went up on the roof, and there found my partner, Edward Stevens, who assisted me to throw the life-boat overboard. We then came down stairs, he (Stevens) immediately ahead of me, and when we reached the deck I missed him. That is the last I have seen or heard of Edward Stevens. When I reached the lower guard, I looked for the life-boat where I expected I should find it, but it was gone. The steward had caught it, and had taken it around on the other side of the boat, under guard, where it was immediately filled with men. During all this time there was a great many people jumping into the river. It was perfectly horrible. I jumpedback to the ladies guard, and out five or six doors, and gave one to each lady. They also had tin life-preservers, around them. I told them not to jump overboard until the fire chased them away; at the same time, the fire was rapidly approaching the spot upon which they were standing. The smoke was getting very thick, and the air very hot. This party of ladies were five in number. They were all begging me to stay with them, and, when necessity obliged us to jump overboard, to allow them to cling to me. I was telling them that such a course would be impossible, when I saw the yawl of the Susquehanna leave that boat and start toward us. I told them to hold on, and they would be saved by the yawl. I then went around on the other guard, so as to bring the Susquehanna yawl around to the ladies before it got filled up with men. After waiting a short time, and fearing they wouldn't come, I jumped overboard in order to swim to the yawl, when the wheel-house fell and barely missed hitting me on the head. When I got into the river, and had a good chance to look about, I saw the yawl going back to the Susquehanna, as it was about sinking with water, and they wanted something to bail it out. I was unable to swim back to where I left the ladies, and tried to swim around the bow of the boat, in doing which I came across a stick of wood, which was of material assistance to me. I soon managed to get around, so as to obtain view of the boat, which I found cleared of' all the ladies. They had gone, and the guard was all in a blaze. That is the last I saw of them, except one, Mrs. A. Kennedy, who had jumped overboard, and had succeeded in getting hold of a ring bolt in the hull, just aft of the wheel. She held on to this until a skiff took her away, and she was saved. Her shoulders and arms were very badly burnt. Mr. Kennedy told me that while she was in that position, she saw all the other women float by her towards the wheel. She caught Mrs. Glime and held her a few minutes, but she couldn't retain her hold in consequence of excessive weakness and heat. It is Mrs. Kennedy's opinion that all the women were drowned by the falling of the wheelhouse, as she could see nothing of them after it fell. Finding that I could do no more service for the ladies, I thought I would look out for myself. I then started to swim for the shore, and landed three miles below where I jumped into the water. When I got ashore 1 found some of our crew, who had been landed by the Susquehanna's yawl a few moments before. I also found a house, but no person living in it. We looked around for means to raise a fire, but there were none. We came near perishing with cold. It was only by extraordinary means that we could retain our hold on life, such was the intensity of the cold. We remain-
ed in the house two hours, constantly exercising, by which means we were kept from freezing. At the end of two hours the Susquehanna came and took us away. It was the longest two hours I ever spent in my life. When I got ashore the burning hull of the St. Nicholas had floated out of sight. The Susquehanna, alter taking us on board, stopped all along the bend, trying to render any assistance to persons supposed to be floating in the river. The Captain and officers of the Susquehanna treated us with every attention, and we are under great and weighty obligations to them for their many acts of kind consideration and attention. Just after supper, before the explosion,
three gentlemen came up in the pilot house and engaged in a conversation about religion and predestination. One of them, a gentleman from Warrenton, Miss., was a strong advocate of the doctrine of predestination. Hee mentioned several instances which he remarked had served to convince hiiu ul the IfUtR ol the tloctriiic.
