EVANSVILLE, IND. TUESDAY MO RSI NG. ...... . .MAY d Th CotciL. Wo are told that some of the members of the City Council got excited on Saturday evening, orer a communication of ours to that Honorable Body. It was a respectful statement of facts, which its figarea demonstrated. If those who exhibited a little temper on the occasion cannot bear an exposition, in their own chamber, of their mistaken or blunders, by a private petition, we shall, if thty prefer it, convey our com plaints to them through the public ear, though it be an improper channel to make j known our private grifvancea. They may I sound less harshly and be made more audi- , ble through such a channel. The pririlege of being heard before a public body in a matter affecting his own intereat and the public service, is the right of every citizen, and to be exercised without incurring personal abuse. A bid for public work is a document belonging to the public records of the city, to which every citixen has the right of free access. To censure the City Clerk for allowing such to be seen, is a new doctrine In this city, and carries a bad odor for a reform council. The printing committee's organ is paying its new found patrons for the wretched pap on which they will starve it, with the extravagant seal of a new born convert. If we thought the matter of moment enough to the public, we would give it and the memorial as originally written, showing the full beauties of the operation. But the sport won't pay for the candles. We will reserve our attention for weightier matters. Terrttovtal Reminiscence The interesting biographical sketches of Vanderburgh and Peeey, by Judge Law, are received everywhere in the State as valuable contributions to its history. Few persons know anything of the meu whose names tbey were daily using till the publication of these papers. Mr. John B. Dillon, the Secretary of the Historical Society, who is now writing a history of the State, in acknowledging the receipt of Judge Law's communications, speaks of them as highly valuable and interesting historical contributions to be filed in tbe archives of the Society, and suggests, that he would gratify the pnblic by writing a short me moir of Geo. Robt. M. Evans, tbe man from whom our city derives its name. He was I a conspicuous man in his day, and rendered tbe State pome service. His family are ree-1 lents of the city and his widow is still oc- j upying the old homestead ; tbe materials i for bis biography must be abundant ; and it wonld be pleasant to his old companions and neighbors to recall the reminiscences of his uie uid be instructive to tbe recent .actlers vn.l 'lie younger portions ot the citizens to i hear a narrative of tbe labors and privation.' of those who first made an opening in j the wilderness, where the city now stands ; it is a duty no one can fulfill so well as Fndge Law. it may not probably be known to mo9t of -ur readers that one of the most terrible inav-1 r' - perpetrated by the Indians in the ' A'est took place in the Indiana Territory nt the close of the year 1812, iu what is now 9mt1 roaaty, and that twenty-four persons mostly women and children constituting nearly nil the settlement of a place called the " Pigeon Roost, " were murdered by the savages The only per-ocs ot the. whole settlement that escaped, were a part of the itmily of a Mr. Collins, who defended their house successfully with their rifles, and a Hn( Beadle and her two children, who, having concealed themselves in a 'ink-hole, while the Indians were engaged in plundering and burning the houses, escaped on foot, u.ad .vending tlteir way to the nearest settlement six mile distant, tarried thither the first nevvj el this terrible calamity. Sia: As soon as I received yoor order, which was March 2d, I bare proceeded to the organization of the four companies, from the S-oond and Fifth regiments, as soon as the circumstances wonld admit. I have received two companies from tbe Second and one from tbe Fifth regiment , tbe other company from the Fifth has been mustered into service, but tbe water was so high that I could not attend the muster, but have sent orders to tbe Captain to station bis company at Beek's blockhouse and at Guthrie's, but Driftwood cannot be crossed and there is no guard at Gnthrie's ; yet tbe inclosed list will show the strength of the other three companies ! One company from the Second regiment is stationed at Kimberland, and at the Pigeon Rooet, and tba other has been stationed at tbe Pigeon Roost ; and on tbe 16th Inst. I was at the Pigeon Roost, ready to move down to tbe forks of Muscaketuck to build a station, but from tho excessive rain that fell on the 17th and 18th rendered lt impossible for me to go on, and I give it over for that time and set out for this place on tbe 19th, but, having to swim and raft the creeka, I did not arrive here until tbe 20tb, late in tbe day. The company from tbe Second I have stationed at this place and in the neighborhood, as tberu is two mills and some other stations that I thiuk it highly necessary to guard. I have, also, sent ten men to Lindsey. I eipect to receive the report from tbe other company, in one or two daya and I will then send you on a complete report of my Bat tall ion. JOHN TIPTON, Major. The as- . . ... i , i . i . settment was made at a conference of the appraisers of the several comities through which the road runs, which was held nt Vincennes on tbe 11th of April. The distributing of the value of the machinery, the depots and work shop.3, over the whole road, unjustly deprives those counties in which such property is situated, of a part of their taxablcs. For instance, depots and worksbops in Vanderburgh are, uuder the law, taxed in Gibson, Knox, Sullivan, and Vigo A juror from tbe country who had been detained in attendance upon court in St. Louis till he bad become homesick, ap plied to a physician of easy principles to get himself released from further duty. The ' Doctor ' received a fee for his professional advice, Ac, and on Monday appeared before Judge Treat while court was in session, and certified, under oath, that the juror was exceedingly ill with bilious fever ; that he could not himself attend to make his excuseand that he was so sick as not to be able to leave his room for three weeks. While this statement was being made, the nick man, wholly unconscious of what wan going on, stepped into the room to get his bill for attendance acknowledged, and thus the Doctor was caught in a palpable and atrocious Lie. The Judge on the bench administered a gentle reproof to the jnror, but said the court would "nave to tak- further notice of tbe conduct of the doctor.
