Yesterday we saw at Tileston's Gallery, photographic portrait full life size of Dr. George B. Tbe friends jf the Doctor and Mrs. W. will, of course, go to see them. We learn that the negatives wete taken here, and the painting was done by an artist in Louisville. Tbe Messrs. Geo. Robsjom is in our city for the purpose of waiting on our citizens and soliciting subscriptions to a couple of valuable and entertaining books. One of them is entitled "The Pillar of Fire, or Israel in Bondage' by Rev. J. H. Ingraham. All who have read the Princs of tbe House of DnvidV will need onlv to ascertain the fact j that tbe above work is by the same author, : to make them ntnious to procure a copr. The other book for which h is eliciting subscriptions, is a graphic and complete Ufa j of tbe celebrated Kit Carson, tbe famous ' fivn -- c w i tu. hcout and Hunter of the est. The adventurea of Carson aie more thrilling than tbe ' , , most exciting romance, and are depicted in this volume with a master pen. Christopher Smith, was tried yesterday on an indictment for burglary, found guilty, and sentenced to tho penitentiary for two years. Alex McCanle) having stolen a three dollar bill from some fellow iu Whisky Row, was sent up the river tor n term of three years. James Berretl having committed sum: p.nty larceny offence waa sentenced to 1 011ti lement in the county jail for one uiotith disfranchised lor fivw years and tiiu-d one dollar. Wttn every man seat to tho penitentiary for appropriating umbrellas not his own especially in rainy times two buildings would be insufficient to hold the convicts. The jury found a verdiet of guilty, and John wa sunt to tbe county jail for five months. The Odd Fellows processiuu jresterdaj was not e,aite so imposing as we anticiprtted. Tbert were not no m.uiv in the ranks aa the Lodges of our city alone conld master, had there been a general turn-out. We counted in all, only l.V, iu the line of march. Tbe paucity fc nnmlcrs, was owing, no doubt, to tbe heavy rain of the night before, which reudered a tramp in the streets quite disajrr ble, and also to the prospectof more rain, yesterday forenoon. The proceeaion was headed hy tbe Evansrille Brass Band, which, with the Canntlton Band, excited great admiration among tbe young folks. A large audience assembled at the church to listen to an able midrees from the Rev. Mr. Sterritt, which is spoken of in terms of praise by all who heard it. After the order of exercises were closed, at the church, the procession was formed, and after marching through many j of the principle streets, terminated at Mar- i ble Hall, where sundry good things were found, admirably adapted to strengthen 1 the innei-man. Music and good humor prevailed, and we pretuue all who partook, felt quite pleasant over their uelebratiou of the natal day of their order. The day was u mm orated iu like manner At Indianapolis, Terre Haute and New HarI f A . y. At Maiaaapoita, in particular, .very arraageaieut was made for having a gTandl time.

The Boweq put out at noon, with a fair trip for Cairo ; tbe Sarcbet, for tbe Wabash, and the Greenville, for Bowling Green. The fine packet, Silver Star, will leave today for Paducah. The Star carries the mail and consequently runs on time. The spleudid steamer Tishomingo, Capt. Ham. Smith, is the regular Louisville packet this evening, at C o'clock. Her gentlemauly agent. Mr. Porter, is found on hand always, to take charge of any freight with which slio may be entrusted. The Scioto No. 2, came down yesterday evening, with a good trip, and returned the same night. The Scioto is determined not. to lose her laurels iu the matter of accommodation and freight. Our thanks are due the steamer Eclipse for the latest New Orleans papers. Yesterday was a wet, disagreeable day, a light, drizzling rain falling almost without cessation from morning till night. The river was about at a stand, aud yesterday evening appeared to be swelling slightly. Doubtless the raius of the past week will give us another rise of a few feet, as they seem to bare extended generally over the oountrY. tr On the wharf business was dull. Very little freight was shipped, and the only activity was ia dischargiug the cargoes of the boats just arrived. The only change in freights to nolo is a reduction to Nashville. Iron and nails are now shipping at ,20c. Steamboatmen seem to have recovered their usual equanimity, and viow the present unfavorable aspect of business with a degree of cheerful resignation hardly to be expected. " There's a good time coming." (A-nrranufii Commercial, 25fA The weather cleared upjiuilii and pleasant yesterday, after raining sleadilv for three davs. The river is high and rising from Pittsburg to Louisville the rails being aavirable for tbe largest class of steamers. Here, it has risen 5 feet during the 48 hours ending last night, and was still swelling slowly. Three feet more will bring the water up to the pavement at the foot of Main street. We have no change to note in freights. The offerings are fair to all points except New Orleans. Owing to tbe scarcity of Southern freights, and in order to facilitate shipments, Capt. NTeal, on Saturday, reshippied the Queeu City's fi igbt with Capt. Hoopla, on the Madison, thus enabliug the latter to leave yesterday, with a full cargo, including her way engagements. The movement i will prove advantageous to shippers, as nei- I ther boat could have departed with a paying trip before the middle of the present week. VeRI Orltant CrttcentflXtt. The weather yesterday was clear, sunny, mild and pleasant, the dust becoming a little troublesome. Business on tbe landing was fair. Freights were iu better offering tlmn for a number of days previous, aud moet of the departures left with paying trips. The passenger business continues good kimI is perceptibly on the increase.
