If ttu honet desire and effort to afford the lovers of tbe drama an opportunity of witnessing superior performance, merit a liberal support, Mr. Macfarland certainly deserves it. He has spared no pains in renovating and reseating the Hall so as to make it comforta ble, in securing the services of a troupe ot able performers, and, above all, in maintaining the strictest decorum, to make his entertainments attractive and attractive they have been. He baa lately added auother budget of tun embodied and known Yankee Biorte which has had quite a tendency to enlarge those who have had the good fort tin- to be present to eujoy bis comicalities, li a man necessarily grows lut from lp u li laughter, the proportions of some of our Theatre-goers are bound to enlarge, tor laugh they mint. To nigh', Mr. Bierce will appear in two of his inimitable pieces M Paternal Schemta," and the " Loan of a j Lover.'' Lovers of fun will, no doubt, be hand to enjoy the treat. Soaa or Tempbramce The Grand Division of the Sons of Temperance holds its aami-ann tal session in our city next weok, beginning on Wednesday. The Order is said to be in a high state of prosperity at tha present time large accessions having been raa4 to its uumbers within the last year and, wa presume, a larc delegation, tram various parts of the State, will be with as 1 1 their meeting next week. We liAve nut received any notica a to what course the Division here intends to take, but we Uel assured they will see to it that our city sustains her reputation tor sociability and LoSjiitaliiy. We freqiifutly have our alteution called to the great increase in the business of ! our city. heu wo examine the reaitons tor this, we discover that it i the energy of our mercantile community that produces this effctt, not the slow-going properly holders, who leave their lots vacant, thereby driving good settlers from abiding with us. Our particular attention has iieen c alled to the great increase in the dry goods and shoe business. The stocks of these goods are large. Our friend Hughes, on the corner of Main and Second streets, has received almost daily tor the post week, additions to his stock of the most superior shoes ever brought to this market. Be sure and patronize him. Vl.woh - Cocbt. On Monday next His Honor, Mayor Baker, opens a Police Court in the Council Chamber, over Scantlin s store. The trial of criminals for violation of the eiiy laws, fir some time past, has been ' ' piNceu uiiogeiner in i;ie nanus ot the Lily Recorder. We are glad to learn that Mr. Baker is not only going to renovate matter, ananciallj, ut that he also intends paying hia respects to all disturbers of the peace. He will meet with the approval of all classes iu his efforts to advance the interests ol our city. Hi v er Kama. aaairau ahv dkpabti ara rmii &'. i .. . .oi r. l 6 o'clock raraapaT. We had quite a shower of rain, yesterday, that did good in laying the dust. ' Business continues dull. The arrivals and departurea will be found at the bead of tha column. We visited our new boats, now in course of erection, and found the work progressing finely. Mr. Lancaster expects to have hie boat ready for service in the course of two or three weeks. The other boat is being urged forward with much energy. The boat when completed, will be near the size of the Oillum. The Diana took oa con-nderal.le freight here, but still left light. The Southerner came down with a good trip. She received some freight here, and went on her way rejoicing. Tha Cincinnati Gazette of Wednesday gives us the following; Tbe weather, yesterday, continued clear and pleasant Tbe river opposite this port continues to decline, at the ra'e of about six inches is 24 hours. Tbe river is falling all tbe way down from Pittsburg. At L.cuiaville the river is filling, with 11 feet of water on tbe falls. Tbe Lower Ohio is high, and in a splendid boating condition. Tbe Pittsburg Qa4tU of Monday last published tbe following : The steamboat captains, or at least a large number of them, held a meeting on Saturday, to aee if something might not be done to save themselves from ruin in tbe St. Louis trade. Freights have fallen down, down, until now they take freight for fen rente a hundred ; think of that, dear reader. Suppoae a bout to carry 600 tons of freight. t $2 per ton, her freight bill to St. Louis would be $1200, and making a liberal allowlor passenger., say 50", wo Lave reof $1700 for the trip. Her expenses would not be leas than say $2000 for the trip oat. The result is evident. At two thousand dollars for freight and passengers, no boat of the size supposed, could make a cent toward paying the interest on tbe money invested, or to cover insurance, and wear and tear. At such rates a freight has now fallen to, uo boat can possibly live, and it is not right, ia our humble opinion, to ship ut lean than living ratca. Live and let live, all the world over. We cannot, however, feel much pity for steamboatmen, iu their dilemma. They ought u stand together, and demand living rates, or else give in, and not build any more boats. If the shipping market is overstocked with shipping, and the tonnage greater than the business, the rata at which boats are sunk, exploded and disabled, will soon reduce the number, so that what are left will have something to do.

NEWS BY TELEGRAPH, '
BY THE E4 W. LINK. -iWasmikoton, April 21 a The usual crowd waa in attendance this morning. Among trie lexers reccivei by the counsel one was read this morning by Brady from a lady signing herself in Ureek characters, "Olynthia'Aiken, and deacribing herself as one of tle order of frailty, one of the simple writers for the wave of some masculine pocket-handkerchief. The letter is dated from We?t Randolph, Vermont, and asks counsels attention to the following. " 1 wonM have no wasps around my honey ; if my wife took a lover 1 would not lecture a woman: what I the use? I'd kill the man; kill him as I would a snake; if she took another I'd ?end him after the first. The Judge said tlwro was a letter on his desk directed to one of the jurors, Mr. WUson, in the care of the Judge. It bore the w York post mark ; supposed there was no objection to its being handed to the juror. Assent was given on both sides, and the letter was handed over. After a few minutes the letter was returned to the Judge who s.tid to the counsel : " This letter is handed back by the juror : he knows nothing about it or the writer; it proceeds from the very worst motives, it is an improper and impertinent, and unwarranted interferencewith the courts of justice." Tht letter was handed down and examined by counsel. The Judgo thought the letter had better la? placed in rusted j of the District Attorney. It waa shown to Sickles and scrutinized by him Mr. Brady said the proposition made yesterday by the government to the counsel of Sickles, to admit the coufession of Mrs Sickles as evidence is rejected h the defence. The District Attorney proposed to examine Francis Doyle to explain bow and under what circumstances certain papers testified to by Mr. Miller and Dr. Pendleton, as to where they were tound. Mr. Brady objected, urging that this was not rebutting e idence. So loug as the middle of the prosecution of the case, the Coroner was introduced and asked to produce cerLiitt articles which had been connected with the person of Key. Various persons who were ittsihe Club Douse at the time Key's body was brought there, were examined, and your Honor will remember how scrupulously it was endeavored, but failed to discover, whether there were any other articles than those which the Coroner possc?ed. We never heard of those papers until they were produced on the stand. It has been shown by the defendant that the prosecution knew of these facta almost immediately after they oune into his hands, and that he communi cated tliem to Mr. Carlisle. Mr. t uld said ii was not communicated to the prosecution, .that these papers could at any time be lound on the person of Key , we now propose to show under v. hat circiiuistnnces these were found, nnd then to trace how they came into the bands of thu witness Phillips argued against the lin of examination proposed. There hi vn would Ik- an end of the trial if such a course were permitted. Ould said there was io evidence offered by the Cnited States as to the existence of the circumstances introduced by the defense. Brady remarked thab Pendleton yesterday repudiated tbe idea that he had lent himself to the concealment of any kind of testimony ; the fact was that Pendleton received letters from the person of Key held then in custody, to be used when required, and commnnicated to Mr. Carlile the fact that these papers existed, and yet the defense knew nothing of them. After further argument the evidence was admitted. New York, April 21 11 The t-liip Cliampluin was totally destroy ol bj tire at Buenos Ayres on the first day of March. Thia exhalation ia evolved by the action of solar heat on act soil, and fiase with the watery vapoi from it. While the sun is below tbe boriaon this vaior lingers near the earth's surface and the virus is taken with it through the lungs, into tne oioou. mere n acts as an irritating poison en the internal viscera and excreting organs of the liody. The liver becomes torpid and nils to secrete not ouly this virus, but also the bile from the blood. Both the virus and the bile accumulate iu tbe circulation, aud produce violent constitutional diso tier. The spleen, the kidneys, and the -t- niarh ympatliize with the liver, and become disordered also. Finally, tbe instinct of oar organism, ai if in au attempt to expel the noxioae infusion, comntrates the whole blood of the body iu tbe internal excrvtoriee to force them to cast it out. The blood lee.res the surface, and ruilu s 1.. the central organs with congestive violence Thia is the Chill. But in this effort it fails. Thou the F:vr.x follows, in which the blood leaves the central organs and rushes to the surface, as if in another effort to expel the irritating poison through that otbar great ooretory the skin. In this also it fails, and the system abandous the attempt exhausted, aud waits fur the recovery ot etn-ugth to repeat the hopeless effort another day. These are , theHts or paroxysms of Fever aUaUfct. Such the fits or paroxysm! of FsvEa as;. V.i i. vawssal.siawsal ,1;.., asatM ,vT a I VVUBHtHMVINU UWWIUl l a 1 1 1 Ul t UIU BV UUUM HlBf M fa t ntnoYed We have labored to find, and have fouud. au IsV : tidote, AYER'S AGUE CURE; which neutralizes this malarious peison in tbo blood and stimulatea the liver to expel it from tbe j body. As it should, to it does care this afflicting disorder with iierfect certainty. And it doos more, 1 or rather does what is of more service to those subject to this infection. If taken ia season it expels it from the system as it is obeorbed, aud thus keeps those who use it free free from its attacks; keeps the n.vsteiu in health although expoeed to tbe dieease.' Consequently it not only cures, but protects lroni tbe great variety of affections which are induced by this malignant influence, such as Remit- ' tent Fever, Chill Fever, Dumb or Masked Ague, Periialical Headache, or Bilious Headache, Bilious Kevors, Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Blindness, Toothache, Karache, Catarrh, Asthma, Palpitation, Painful Aflecticns of tbe Spleen, Hysterics, Colic, Paralysis, and Painful Affections of the Stomach and Bowels, all of which, when arising from thia cause, will be found to assume more or leas of the intermittent type. This "Am i: Clre" removes the cause of these derangements, aud curee the disease. This it accomplishes by stimulating the excretories to expel the vinis from the system ; and these organs by degrees become habited to do this their office of their own accord. Hence arises what wa term u.-.-ionaioM. Tim. may accomplish the same .i.i . but often life is not long enough, or Is sacrificed in tbe attempt, while this "Aot'c Ci re" dot it at once, and with safety We have great reason to ladleve this is a surer as wall as safer remedy for the whole class of diseases which are caused by the miasmatic infection, than any other which has been discovered ; and it has still another Important advantage to the public, which is, that it is cheap as well as good.
