Slue 5iuii) MoatuaL EVANSVILLE, IND. TUESDAY MORNING .AEBII The latest report from Washington to indicate that the Si. kles tri.il will he almost interminable. Tha defense state that they hare witnesses sufficient to occupy three days yet ; and the prospect ot a speech from each one of the lawyers, makes every surmise as to the time the trial will last, bnt mere guea work. The defense are determined to wear the prosecution out by speaking on every quibble, and interposing continual delays. Thus, on Friday, the prosecution made only one speech to the jury throughout the entire day, and then apologized for that, whilst the lawyers on the defense were talking continually. It would be odd if Mr. Sickles' counsel, through excessive zeal, should worry the jury into convicting him. There is said to be an ill-feeling among Mr. Sickles' counsel, growing out of professional jealousy. The truth is, there are too many of them. A New Paper at Indianapolis. The prospectus for a new political daily paper at Indianapolis, issued by the veteran editor tad politician, John D. Defrees, has excited a good deal of remark, which seems likely to make the paper famous before its issue. Mr. Defrees is capable of making an excellent newspaper, bnt he has piooosed an object, which, we fear, he is the wrong man to accomplish. He tried his hand at it in 185, and failed. He repeated the attempt last autumn, with an equally unfortunate result. The prospoctus says that the paper, while it " will not compromit any of the objects had in view by the great conservative Republican party,'' will be particularly ilevoted to bringing about ua united action of those opposed to the present party in power." The paper will be an individual u:n ii Tani1Ki;in ond will enterprise, "will be Republican, and will not ignore the slavery or any other question" he deem3 proper to discuss. We apprehend he will find it, before the end of many weeks, a most fruitless attempt to unite tbe opposition in this State, without " ignoring the slavery question," or yielding any of the objects had in view by the ' conservative Republican party. Without a distinct renunciation of some of the leading objects of Republicanism, and stop to the agitation of the slavery question bv the Republicans, there can W no union no coalition of the elements of the opposition. We are sufficiently advised of the sentiments of Southwestern Indiana, a section tbat holds the balance of polit ical power in the State, to feel confident in the opinion which we offer to Mr. Defrees for what it is worth that without such concessions as will fully satisfy the honest anti-Lecompton Democracy, and the independent men who adhered to Fillmore, in 1856, the defeat that awaits the Republican party next fall, will be more overwhelming and mortifying than their last. If their love for their party is -itrouger than their regard for the essential and lasting interests of the State, they will find as little sympathy and support next fall in this part of the State, as their State ticket found here last autumn. Within a tetv vars. Lake Superior has leen linked with tbe chain of more Southern Lakoi OJ the opening of the Saut Canal, around the Falls of St. Mary, and a tide of mineral wealth ia beginning to pour 'own the Lakes from the mines of Murquette itOd Ontonagon. The Southern shores ol the Lake abound in copper, iron, and eilwr, the extent of which ia yet unexplored and incalculable. I clip the following from a recent report made by Dr. Uharles T. Jackson, late I'. S. Geologist, on the geology, mineralogy, &c, ,.t the Lin l around Lake Superior. 44 As mineral region, it is one of the. most important in this c untry, and is rich tn veiu3 of metallic copper and silver. ... 1 as in the ores of those metals. At Um present mtanent it may be regarded a the most tsjoabk mining district in North Arneri.-;,, with the exception only of tlie goM nVpOsifes ot aiifbrnia.' The discneion of the practic ability of a Northern railroad to the Pacific Ims thrown new Ugll upon the character of this rountry, and dissipated many of the prejudice of the public, in reg-nrd to tbe climate and :'ertility of the -oil. It ii a f t cb-ulv estuleii?hed bv the icpyrts of er odneers .md ssiootifio men, that the route to the ' -tic,
beginning at the western extremity of Lake
, between the 47tb and 49th parallels, is more than 200 miles shorter than any ' 1 other oroposed route, ruuuing through a i omer Propotu , 0 ,i country adapted to the cereals an esculents of the Middle States, and as level as the prairies of Illinois. Says Got. Stephens in his report : li This route is not oletniit.-il Ly deep snow ; nor is the temperature as low as has generally been imagined."' It is strange that sectional feelings will prevent men from awarding to the North her preeminent fitness for the construction of a road to the Pacific. While Congress is dincussing the purchase of Cuba, the increase of postage, and the style and manner of the seats in the new Houses, upon which they are to rest their honorable bodies, the Knglish government is connecting the shores of the Atlantic with Vancouver's lslanl. While men are frittering away the public money in Congress, and the newspapers are discussing the miuutia-of a BRBBRS and murder in sight of the President's house, hundreds of laborers are casting iip a highway to the Pacific, and a line of steamers are lieiug constructed in the heart of the wilderness to form links across navigable lakes and by deep rivers in the chain to tinRocky Mountains. Since hi. ai root, and during his trial, he had manifested a stolid indifference, which can only be accounted for as eithei the result of inability loCMMrabtad nil position, uncommon self-control, or an extremely callous disposition. The t t iuum v elicited in the trial was to alout the following effect : The difficulty which resulted in the murder took place at a school which both partics attended, originating from a dispute as j to the authorship of what was elaimed to be a love letter, purporting to have been written by Shillings, but which each accused tin- other of writing.
