EVANSVILLI MOM DAT MORNING APRIL It The Sickles Trial. The exposure of hit wife's confession, and the use attempted to bt made of it, has produced a reaction in the Sickles rase, and it is now reported that it is likely the jury will disagree, aad be unable to form a verdict. His counsel are, however, confident of an acqaittal. The Canal. j While the managers and their torces were uirtuc.a employed in repairing the break at Dongola, another occurred on Friday near Newark, about fourteen miles from this city. The injury, we learn, is not a very serious one, bot will have the effect to close navigation for a week or more. The management of , the canal nas not yet Deen organizeu. nnu the managers had time to complete their arrangements this accident would probably have been prevented. We learn that about six thousand five hundred dollars have been subscribed for the canal fund above Main street, and the canvasser in the lower part of the city, who has been unable, from the pressure of private business, to give his attention to the work for the last week, is confident that he will raise as much or more below Main street. The city subscription will probably give the managers about one half the amount needed to complete their undertakings. The balance will be raised along the line between here and Newberry. The subscription has not been made with the liberal public spirit, which the projectors of the undertaking expected, yet there is no doubt that all that is absolutely required will be finally raised. Mauy have put down liberal amounts, freely and promptly, with expressions of regret that they could not do more for the public good. Others have hesitated and procrastinated, and have required weeks to reflect upon a duty, obvious and patent to every man s senses; hesitation and delay are more ' discouraging to the canvassers than flat refusals. To give a detailed account to the canvasser of every dollar each one has lost in the stock of the Straight Line and the Crawfordsviile Railroad, affords to his mind no satisfactory reasons for not subscribing to the canal. Those accounts relate to another and past events, which time has closed and settled ; and adjusted, too, in a manner to render the supposed lost money a good investment for the city and the individual i loser. But the canal is a living present j question ; and the simple interrogatory for every citizen to answer, when the subscription paper is presented to him, is, " how much can, or will, you subscrile out of your present means for its preservation ?" Let this answer be put at once upon the canvasser's book, in figures, and let him go on his way. . The cities that axe incorporated iiu-

The I
question has been referred by New Albauy to Randal Crawford and Judge Otto, who have decided that the officers must be elected in May; and New Albany has determined, under this opinion, to have an election. Hut Mr. Gregory, of Lafayette, and others contend that the old officers hold over for another year or two. In the latter opinion, the Attorney General of the State concurs, and is about to publish his extra-afficia! opinion as a rescript for the guidance of the 1 doutittul. It will be recollected that last autumn a gang of horse thieves was arrested, consisting of the father and seven sons, named Prathers, who bad lived together in a remote and secluded settlement in the upper part of Perry county, in this State. They had been suspected for many years of living by dishonest means, but as they did not depredute upon their neighbors, paid their debts, and had, apparently, a good deal of property, no one interfered with them. Last fall some stolen horses were 'raced to their neighborhood and found in their possession. This, led to the arrest of the father and six son? the seventh was over in Kentucky where lie acted as striker for the gang, and escaped. Five of the sons were committed to Leav. eQ worth jail, and oue sou and the father were Imprisoned in Perry couuty. The eld est of the sons, a man over 40 years old, died in prison a few weeks ago at Leavenworth. The other four were tried there last week, aud all convicted and sentenced to the pa itentiary for two years. - Old man Prather and his youngest soi 215 years of age, are to be tried in Perry county in' May, and will probably tie ;ent with the others to Jeffersonville. The father of this family of thieves is a remarkable specimen of hnmanity. From some rheumatic affection he is drawn into every conceivable ill shape, and has been confined to his bed for the last fifteen years, being unable- to'use any fo bis members except his hands and tongue, the latter of which he uses with great facility. While his afflictions uf body prevented him from engaging in the active oKratiotis of the business, he was nevertheless the ruitag spirit of the clan, and h supposed to have uianm.j .-verv eDeditioii or mrav mih.h tin Thr KiRoi'Kvv I'kuk CtMatiM.- TIm Congress that is to las assemld to settbthe international alV.tirs of Kurope, an d I ! pe-ialljr, to adjust the Italian qOJOstiosI DS tween Austria and France, is to assemble during April, in the town of Baden. This finding of the Grand .lury. says the Mrrctry, will r.the 'he question of availibility in the law in MN a marked and decided as could well occur. It was mentioned.. a few days -in o. that the prisoners were taken for trial to Columbia, at which place occurred the fir-' of the District Court after their arrest. The nomination of Col. N'et'u iland, for Governor of Tennessee has excited an enthusiasm in the ranks of the opposition that promise a triumphant election of the American candidate.
