EVAWSVILLE, IND. FKIDAY MORNING MARCH 18
Canal Meeting. All persons feeling any interest in keeping the Southern Division of the Canal in repair, are invited to attend a preliminary meeting at the Court House, on Saturday evening, at 7 o'clock, for the purpose of appointing delegates to, and making arrangements for, the Canal Convention to be held at this place, on Wednesday, the 23d inst. ———<>——— jgS?" The New York Jlemld has discovered quite a mare's nest. It says the Seward faction have entered into an organized system for the purpose of abolitionizing the South, and that the late report of the slave auction held in Savannah recently, which was pub lished in the New York Tribune, is but an out-crop of this deeply laid and well digested scheme. It says the system to be put into operation by the Sewardites is a system of operations which must necessarily comprehend, among the tobacco, rice, cotton and sugar plantations of the South, an extensive distribution of abolition spies and emissaries. These spies and emissaries, taking this Savannah pioneer as an average specimen, will be keen to select out, and eager to exaggerate in the darkest colorings all the events and peculiarities of plantation life, Southern institutions and Southern society, best calculated to inflame and widen that anti-slavery sentiment upon which the pre3ent Republican party came into existence. And what remedy does the Herald propose for this scheme? Nothing more nor less than the reorganization of the Whig party I It says that between the abolition fanatics of the North, headed by Seward and the fire-eaters of the South, urged on by Toombs, & great conservative party is being created in the States of Virginia, Kentucky, and TenuKMee, in which alone the hopes ot the Union are, ccutcred. Accordingly,' the Jlirald looks upon the approaching Virginia election as involving contingencies of the highest moment to the peace of the Union ; and believes that a victory to the new opposition party there in May, will be the Inauguration of a national union party movement, capable of controlling the next Presidential election, in behalf of th great conservative body of the American people, North and South. C - A . DisTRBS3jso. On Tuesday last, Madora, a little dausrhter of Mr. Miner, a resident of Newburg, died from the effects of a burn received near Boonville on the first of the month. She was on a visit to her- uncle, Jame3 E. Lowell, intending to. return home in a few days. One morning asweleam from the Democrat she accompanied Mrs. J. Lowell to a sugar camp, distant less than half a mile, for the purpose of boiling a little sugar water. She was very much elated with the idea of seeing water made into su gar; the time fur granulating the sugar-a3 near at hand, and little Madora, anxious to witness the whole process, approached too near the fire, the wind blowing quitehardin that direction, her apron was set on fire, and instantly flamed up and at once communicated the flames to her other clothing. Mrs. LoWell sprang to her relief as quick as possible, and undertook, to divest her of her clothing; the litte girl by this time was greatly alarmed and excited, and tore herself loose Crom Mrs. L. repeatedly ; all this while the flames were rapidly spreading, being fanned by a strong current of wind, 'and her clothing being composed mostly of ii ver3' strong texture, and securely fastened to her body j it was with much delay and difficulty that they could be löoseued. Finally Mrs. L. ran with her to alow piece of ground, some distance off, and rolled her her in some Water and . mud,.' wholly extinguishing the lire. : CQJ, The Xatchez Pre Trader gives us a . new.lc.it in the history of Douglas. It fltntPd, riion what is regarded as good authority, that he waa the author of the following resolution, which? was .reported to the Mtssissippi Delegation at the Cincinnati Convention, by a Committee (of the Delegation) appointed to consider the subject of Slavery : "11. litsolveJ, That the National Demo, rratic party lielieve in the perfect political equality of the States, and that the citizens of every State have an equal right to emigrate peaceably to the Territories, and to take with them whatever is recognized as property in the State from which they go, and there receive for it adequate legal protection ; that there is no power in Congress or in the Territorial. Legislature to exclude from tha Territories anything which is regarded a? property in a State; but when a Territory has sufficient. Federal population, lawfully ascertained, to entitle it to one Representative in Congress, (i. e., according to the present ratio, 93,420), it is the duty of Congress to authorize the .territory to torm a Stute Constitution, republican in its form, preparatory to the admission into the Union as a State, and that it Is no constitutional crrouud of objection to the admission of such State that the Constitution thus . formed either admits or excludes Slavery." Ax Ho::e3T Coxrssfiosr. Senator Toombs, with all his terrors, is a bold man, and some times says what is not agreeable to his po litical associates. In bis late speech on the revenue question, he thus spoke of the waste fulness of the National Administration : Your appropriations for navy yards have gone to the building of houses for officers and the making of ttower-pot3 and all that sort of thing, at the cost of $2,000,000 ; and it will lie. no less as long as you will pay it, but will go up to $4,0110,000, it' you do not stop it. There are $2,000,000 that you have uo need for at all. You have 8,000 sailors to man your navy. You have not increased them of late years, and you have fcow S.0Ö0 men in your navy yards to help tliein civilian. You have carried their number up from 3.000 to 8,000. You have eight navy yards. England has 550 ships and hue two navy yards. You have eight iciivf niently located about the country, and it is a cause of reproach to good Democrats for the enemy to sny we keep people here to cheat tlie'ni in election; and, God in my J iij", I it at ajrfi.l there i somtthiuy jV it
Items of Interest. I J"The members of th New Jersey j Legislature have just been participating in : a " free blow," tendered them by the New I Jersey Central Railroad Company. It 13 said that the Legislators became fulbj convinced that the greatest good to the greatest number required the extension of this great thoroughfare to Jersey City. It only requires a free railroad ride and a good dinner, now-a-days, to buy up most of our State Legislators. yIt seems that the express companies of the East have been in the habit of breaking open packages to see if the amount of money contained in them corresponded with the marked amount ou the envelope. A question is likely to arise here, involving large interests. The question is, has any carrier aright to brake the seal of packages
entrusted to his care, and detain them because they differ in value from the amount for which they have been insured ? gT An exchange, in speaking of the different pictures of the Sickle3 tragedy, pjoduced by the " sensation papers," says, an old cut of Piccolomini has, in one instance, done service for Mrs. Sickles ; in another a picture of Jenny Lind has been put to the sarnie use. Mr. Sickles aud Mr. Butterworth have been represented by the pictures of two celebrated murderers. The portrait of Mr. Alfred Bunn, the London manager, has been offered as that of Mr. Key. gST" The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore Patriot denies that the South American members of the House have determined that the Speakership of the next Congress must be conceded to them. They will be ready to yield that office, he " has reason to think," to the Free States, "upon condition that a just, liberal, and unexceptionable man shall be selected as the candidate; one for whim they can vote' without compromising themselves at home ; such a man, perhaps, as" MrT Corwin, perhaps Mr. Sherman, or Mr. E. J. Morris, or others that could be named." ——>The Fair Grounds at New Albany are being rapidly improved. Shade trees are being transplanted, roads made, &c.— The plans for the new buildings and anmpi- [sic] theatres are about completed. ——>The Louisville <Courier> says that two slaves were captured in Indiana, some fifty miles from that city, last week, and brought to the jail of that city. They escaped from a South Carolina planter some months since. They made a desperate resistance before they were secured, shooting one of the pursuers, and wounding him so badly he will hardly recover. One of the negroes was Bhot in the shoulder, and otherwise injured by blows. He is under medical treatment in the city jail. - - JBS?" Gov. Mo'rehead, of Kentucky, offers $200 reward for Jos. H. Roberts, who killed Jos. Kelly in Augu9t, 1856. The murderer is a native of Louisville, a harness-maker by trade, but a gambler by profession. Jno. Griffin of Louisville, has been granted a patent for improvement in cotton harvesters, and W. T. Gill, of Henderson, Ky., for improved steam guage. raf A man recently lost his arm in Louisville, Ky., iu ' attempting to save hi.? dog that happened to tumble off the ferryboat. His affection for the canine has been amply demonstrated. . .. . ' The Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette says thai since the late Mr. Brown's appointment as Postmaster General, the expenditures have increased from eleveu millions , to twenty, and Unit without any corresponding : advantages to the country. . , ' ' ' BQ The Washington Star says 'that the actual Post Office deficiency is over $5,006,000. The same paper mentions that the Star thinks there is no authority to use the accruing revenue without the authority of Congress, and hints the necessity of an ex,trasessiou. It says the Department has in fact nine months of arrears. Au extensive fire occurred at Hons too, Texas, on the 20th ult. Property to the amount of $100,000 w as destroyed. Of this large sum, only $20,O0i was covered by insurance. Jacobi, uuder sentence of death at Pittsburg, for the murder of his wife, is said to be suffering the keenest pangs of remorse. He tosses and turns upon his miserable cot, and frequently gives veut to Iiis feelings in tears and sobs. He cannot suffer to remain iu bis cell without a light,' and a candle is kept constantly burning. He often speaks in the most touching manner iu reference to his children, and wonders what shall become of them when he is gone. He attributes his mental distress to this painful anxiety in regard to the welfare of his children, and does not. admit that he fears death on his own account. . 2fA negro living in Cincinnati becoming jealous of his wife, recently, attempted to commit suicide. He retired to the cellar, adjusted the rope to the beam above, placed the iioose around his neck, and hoped to make a clean swing into the next world, but the rope broke, and he only received a good ' garroting" aud a few unimportant bruises, in bis fall. Hi experience in the hanging busiuess induced him to try: the buitetius of the world a while longer. " ; j(The case of Drowu against the city of Louisville, wu tried iu the Bullitt Circuit Court on Friday and Saturday. The jury were unable to agree, ton beiug for defendant, one for plaintiff, and one uncertain. Brown owned oue of the negroes -barged with the murder of the Joyce family and who was hung by a mob in that city. He sued the city for the value of the negro. 8The Democrats of St. Louis recentlyheld a Convention for the nomination i f city officers. On the rim ballot Col. L. V. Bogy was nominated for Mayor; Richard P. Henenkamp was Dominated for the office of Comptroller; James Mulh,. Hand, tor Auditor; Henry Eilsmilli-r, tor Treasurer ; H. G. 83, The editor of the Indianapolis Daily CiHien writing to his paper notices our city as follows: - - Evansville is growing finely, ami the business done here is very large and Iieavy. It is a great wholesale point. Green river,
running from the interior of Kentucky, empties into the Ohio onlv a few miles above, and this is the place of trade and" trans-shipment for all the fertile1 region on ' its banks. - Immense quantities of tobacco, grain, aud other produce come, out of Green river, and the merchants here, in exchange, s:'t . the Kentuckians vast quantities of . . : i.xhandise at a fair profit. " This is a tn it. .h.it pays both ways. " Tl tfV.m.h river trade is also a big ite:r, - Evansville. Regular lines of ste; is luu up this, as well as up Green rivev. making Evansville their source of supply . ;i stores and outfit. - , The city is making considerable of a business of manufacturing. This interest is growing, and is bound to become the source of wealth and the support of a large increase in the population in the immediate future. The people here say that all kind3 of manufactures that have been started here have paid and continue to do so. Some large establishments have been built up, .solely from the profits, with little aid from outside capital. The Court House has just been on fire, but is now safe. A couple of years ago it burned, but was subsequently re-built. It is a fine building. Evansville cau not uiake sport of Indianapolis for being muddy, for here we fiud the nastiest and meanest kind of mud yellow clay sticky and tenacious, and plenty of it in wet weather. The Bodiam Coal Minej, just below the city, turnish coal for fuel a good article, at ten cents per bushel. This is a creat, coal region. At Cannelton, Hawesville, Cloverport, Coalport, Evansville, and several other points, coal 13 delivered to the steamboats, in any quantity, at six cents per bushel. A few years ago wood was used by them for steam, exclusively, but now coal is the article used instead. It is of good quality for steam, but not for smithing purposes so I have been told. . The weather here is very windy and bracing. The wharf is full freight, and from four to eight sometimes ten steamboats may be seen at the landing, every day. -, Yours, &c, . Mc. New Yobk Posn.voa. The non-passage of the PostolBce Appropriation Bill was a great mail failure. It is suggested that the dead bill should be subjected to a post mortem examination. . Perhaps it was killed by, the red tape worm. Mr. Whipple is lecturing in the mouurn Athens on the "Age of Elizabeth." Is not he discourteous thus publicly to twit upon facts. . The Democrats in Salem propose cele brating the birth day of Thomas Jeiferson on the first of April. The date and the pres ent position of true Jencrsoniamsm, combine to give the affair the appearance of n wake. Why is the Academy of Music, after an opera or lecture, like a person crying ? Be cause it is sheading "tiers.': Fuel for Lawyers Coke. ' ' "' - Mr. J. G. Spott, a small cflice holder iu Minnesota, complains bitterly, in a card, that some of his own political friends nro resolved to get him out, but predicts that they will fail. No doubt, ' says the Louisville Journal, Mr. Spott thinks t he- will succeed as badly hb Lady Macbeth, when in her despair, she exclaimed, "Out, damned Spot."' This is not as good nor us original hs Sidney Smith's answer, when a lady asked him fur a motto for the collar of her favorite little lap-dog "Spot, who was fond of showing his de-spot-ic power rd harking incessantly at visitors. . Of course the motto proposed by the witty canon of St.- Paul's was, " Out, damned Spot." ' -? " Jä?"A terrible railroad accident occurred at Glendale this morning, by" which a worthy citizen of. that vicinity met-with a sudden and terrible death. Mr. Skillman was thrown some distance and was much mutilated ; he was instantly killed. His remains were picked up, and carried into an adjoining building, to uwu'it the view" of the Coroner.
