The Fire Department were on the ground promptly, and placed their machines in positions to accomplish the greatest good in case the flames got a start. We were pleased to see they had discretion enough not to ruin the building with water without stopping to ascertain where the fire was.— Very frequently more damage is done by throwing water heedlessly, than would have been done had the fire been permitted to have its way. In case the Court House had been consumed, how much of its value would have been saved by insurance? We trust a hint is sufficient. ———<>——— ——>The Washington Fire Company have quite an airy location for their Engine and Hose Carriage. We hope, for the honor of I the city, it will not remain in its present position any great length of time. If the shed in which the engine has stood for several months be removed, cannot the company be furnished with a building more in accordance with their merits? The prosperity of a city is most generally judged of by the style of its improvements. The application of this rule would lend a stranger to a very erroneous conclusion with regard to our public spirit and enterprise, and yet nine persons out of ten visiting our city, would form opinions of us after this manner. No city can be truly prosperous without a good fire department. No fire department can be efficient unless they are supplied wiih good machinery, and neat, substantial houses in which to keep it. The Washington Company should have a good house. Other companies ought to have better engines. We wonder the firemen do not bear these thing [sic] in mind in the city election that is to take place next mouth in the election of Councilmen. ———<>——— Cooper' EnglisU Opera Tronpe. This noted company of musical artistes are Announced for a series ofconcerts here, at Crescent City Hull, on next Thursday, Friday,, and Saturday evenings. Having' had the pleasure of listening to the performances of this troupe, we can l'iuiuiac luv: in unn.-iu og pul null VI uui citizens, an entertainment which will be a j constant source of delight to them. j The instrumental part of it, under the j lead of Mr. Cooper, the unrivaled violinist, j is not to be Surpassed by any musical abil- j ity which ever finds its way to the West. j , Miss Annie JMilner, the Prima Donna, is ! an attractive young lady, endowed with a ' magnificent voice, and rare powers of dra- ! nnitic expression. We can not specify fur- ! ther; but suffice jt to say, the talent is all I Erst class, . ' 1 The absence of scenery will detract some- j vbat from the interest of the'exhibition ; j : but Hfl the main attraction is the music, noth- i iug will . be lost to the passionate lover of j that divine science. I -.In conclusion, we shall say, if you wish hear the finest operatic gems, from nnrii i . .. i . Tiuni jiiiir'ie, in juui uw ll Ullijinie, Ul n reasonable price, atteud the concert of "... Cooper's English Opera Troupe. New Unokt. Mr. Benient, whose sermons and lectures . have been delighting large audiences in our " city for some time past, has laid upon our . author. One of them is eutitled " Kinirdom " of Brass," nnd comprises a general history ' of the world from the birth of Alexander the Great to the birth of Christ, including uiaiuij.vi wining m (reuuu. The other is called "Tyre; the history of Phoenicia, Palestine, aud Svria, and the j ' final captivity of the Children of Israel and i Judah by the Assyrians." -. I The typographical execution of these ; books is good. We have not read them, as yet, bnt we fed no hesitancy in saying that no one will regret the amount of money that lie may choose to invest in them. Mr. Bemeut's ability has been so demonstrated in our city, that no culogium we could pass upon his writings, would add a great deal to the demajul for them iu this community. Mr. Bemeiit intends remaining iu our city for a few days "only, and an opportunity to procure his books will only be afforded while he is here. During the term of his stay they may be found at Mr. Healy's bookstore, on Main street. ———<>——— ——>On Monday night as one of our citizens was going home about 12 o'clock, he was accosted in the street by a stranger who informed him that he had just been robbed in the buildings known as Whisky Row, and was in search of a police officer. The stranger stated that he came with his family from Missouri, and was pursuaded by some man, on being landed in our city, to put up at that establishment, until he could get on board of a steamer going up Green river, which was his destination. His wife and children were in company with him
After putting up at this house, himself and
family soon retired to bed. He had been asleep but a short time when it was discovered that some one was taking his money from his pataloons [sic] pocket. The money being secured, the robbers left the room, and the Missourian slipping on his clothes as quietly as possible started for the police. Having obtained the desired assistance, he returned to the house and made a demand of his money. After considerable altercation, the inmates of the house became frightened, and the money was produced, and returned to the stranger. His wife, while he was searching for an officer, had been grossly insulted, and the children were screaming in terror. After regaining possession of his money, the Missourian was not slow in vacating the premises and seeking another boarding house until he could hear of a boat for Green river. ———<>——— 83 Läger beer, whenever it gets the start of a fellow, either externally or internally, is very difficult to be brought under control. Yesterday, we saw a poor fellow with eyes, mouth, and nose full, and hair completely saturated with the beverage, whilst the beer was foaming audfizzing from akegin a manner to the uninitiated quite alarming. It seemed that he had undertaken to put in a spiggot, and not Wing very expert, the beer had obtained a decided advantage. A neighbor helped him to get his eyes open, and plugged up the hole from which the lager was escaping, and we "passed on moralizing ns above. - Ileceipts ly llallroad. i. v - . - March lü, 1 85. About ten o'clock yesterday morning, as the men were getting paid off, the territory of Uncle Sam was ruthlessly invaded and the rules of the Navy Yard set at defiance by a female heroine, in the person of Mrs. W., a widow, " fat, fair and forty," who walked into the yard with a cowhide undei her cloak, and straightway proceeded to the object of her search, a Mr. P. Having found him, she uncloaked her cowhide, and unceremoniously applied it to his head and shoulders, with a vigor that could not be surpassed by even a brawny truckman. Not satisfied with one flaggellation, She returned after dinner, and again applied her cowhide to the head and shoulders of her victim with renewed vigor; and, after she got through with her second chastisement, she declared she would come every day until , she got six dollars, which she averred was due to her for house rent "or have im worth of it out of his hide.
