Local and Miscellaneous The life of Kit Carson, the Rocky Mountain trapper, the guide and companion of Fremont, has been published. The nttrrative was taken from his own lips, and betides the wild adventures and narrow escapes it relates, the book contains much valuable information. 5jgf" A stock company has been formed at New Albany, for the purpose of building a turnpike road to Hamburg, twenty-five miles distant. The merchants and real estate owners of that enterprising city, alive to their own interests, have come forward with liberal contributions in aid of the enterprise. Hbayt Consignments. We observe that Messrs. AUis Howes are receiving large consignments of Sugar and Molasses directly from the Planters on the coast. The Maria Denning brought up 160 hhds Sugar and 240 packages Molasses to them, which meet with rapid sales, and, like previous consignments, with very satisfactory prices to the shippers. This is already one of the best grocery markets on the Ohio, and these consignments will increase the inducements of purchasers to resort to it.

Mr. McLane, the new Minister to

man progressive in his views of American expansion ; and the very man to represent us at the Halls of the Montezuma, if they can be found these "troublous times." 8T" Shawneetown was entirely submerged in the late rise. The Illinoivan says the water was four feet deep on Main street, and ttifc only dry land to bo seen was a few rods at the tipper end of the place called the Mounds all the inhabitants were driven for safety to the second stories of their dwellings. The streets were navigable in almost any part for steamboats. Business generally was suspended on account of the high water, there being little r no communication with the country. A vast sheet of water, miles in extent, met the view of the eye in every direction. Bemext's T KCTCHts. Mr. Bement will give another of his very interesting lectures this evening at Crescent City Hall. The principal topic will be the Babylonian cap

tivity of the Jews, and the ancient cities of

Assyria, Nineveh, Tadmor, &c. There is a

fund of information condensed into one of

these discourses that can be acquired by a reader only by wading through numerous

ponderous volumes ; as communicated by the Lecturer, who has visited the places . which were the scenes of the events related,

' the descriptions are graphic and glowing as . from one before whose mental eye they had

Washington, March 9 p n The Senate, to-day, confirmed the nomination of John Hubbard, of Maine, as boundary Commissioner; after which Wiggins was nominated but rejected. Also, John Pettit, of Indiana, Chief Justice of Kansas, vice Lecompte. Also, Bartholomew Fuller, of N. C, as fifth Auditor of the Treasury. Emory D. Potter, heretofore rejected as Collector at Toledo, was again renominated and confirmed. Other appointments of less consequence have been confirmed. The Senate will meet to-morrow, at 2 o'clock, and then formally close the present session. It is not expected that there will be quorum present. . The Supreme, Circuit, and Criminal court have adjourned, in order to attend the funeral of the Post Master General, to-morrow afternoon. Orders have been issued to the public officers throughout the country, to pay appro

priate tributes of respect, customary on the decease of an Executive officer of the Government. After the doors were opened, the Vice President retired from the chair, and 6n mo

tion or Mr. Bright, of Indiana, it was ordered that Mr. Fitzpatrick, of Ala., be Presipro tem. of the Senate.

A message was read from the President

announcing the death of Po3t Master General, Brown.

The message says the death of this dis

tinguished public officer, especially at the present moment, when his eminent services

were so much needed, is a great loss to the country. His honesty and indefatigable ex

ertions in the discharge of his high duties, as well as his benevolent heart and kind deportment, endeared him to all who approach-

eu mm, suomiiung 10 we will or divine Providence, as the President does, he adds that he will ever cherish the memory of the deceased with affectionate regard.

Mr. JNicnolson after delivering an eulogy

on the deceased submitted a series of resolutions expressing deep regret at this public loss : that the Senate will attend the fune

ral and that a committee be appointed to

mate arrangements for the same, and that the

Senate go in mourning for 30 days ; and

tnai a copy ot tne resolutions be communicated to the President, and, a further mark of respect that the Senate now adisurn.

rrevsous to adjournment, Messrs Rice and

r oote were appointed to wait on the Presi

dent and inform him that if he had no fur

ther business to communicate that the Senate is ready to close this session.

Scene in the Wisconsin Legislature.

The Madison correspondent of the Milwaukie A'eics thus write3:

This afternoon, after the Assembly had

adjourned, an old Indisn came into the hall and looked around, nodded to the members, shook hands with the reporters and clerks, and wandered np to the Speaker's stand.

Taking np the gavel he looked at it carefully, struck a blow with it on the Speaker's

desk and listened. Tue echo evidently

pleased him, for he struck two or three more blows, then commenced a regular war dance, keeping time to his step with the new

"war club. The members cheered, and

for fifteen minutes the old fellow kept up his aboriginal exercise, and only stopped when

too tired to keep up his youthtul pastime.

hole thus lett. Tne board snould extend

out beyond the spread of the branches. All

the bushes thus treated had a fine crop, while some that were left without boards

were mildewed badly, and the crop lost. : These boards should be placed under the bushes as soon as the crop is set.

Singular Dekekce. A Life Insurance

Company of New Yrfk insured the life of a wife for the benefit of her husband, and continued for five years to receive the premium therefor. When the wife died, and

payment of the money was claimed, it was

refuted, on the ground that a husband can

have ne insurable property interest in the

life of his wite, aud that such a policy, therefore, was a mere bet a gambling tran

saction, and as such illegal and void. The company evidently did not believe that

gambling debts were debts ot honor.

As Awkward Fix. The Brookville (Pa.)

Jeffersonian of the 10th instant says, that a

German, named Carb, while out hunting in Clearfield county, came across a bear trap,

and having never seen one before, he entered for the purpose of examining it, un-

fortunately touched the trigger, and was

shut up. In this predicament he remained

two days, nearly dead trom hunger and

cold, when the man who set the trap come

to examine it, and found that, instead ot a

bear, he had caught a man.1'
