It may prove interesting to our lady readers, as a picture of social festivities in our national Capital. A Polyglott Statb. The Secretary of State of Wisconsin informs the Legislature that of the amount of money expended for public" printing during the past three years, about $27,000 was for English, $30,000 for "German, and $14,000 for Norwegian languages. ' -- "Thb Old Folks." The Madison Courier learns that a company, eou9isting of a father, mother, and nine small children ami an infant, will soon issue from the Granite hills, dressed in the costume of 1555. The music of this troupe will bo the same as that sung by John Rogers at the stake. John's hymnbook and the identical chain, said to 1)6, with which he was fastened to the stake will be exhibited. Ye grand old music will become popular again. ' Bayard Taylor. Notwithstanding the severe storm of Thursday evening, qnite large audience assembled to hear this celebrated traveler. Iiis lecture was an admirable condensation of his letters to the New York Tribune, some months ago, descriptive of a ." Journey to the Far North." His picture of winter scenery interspersed with sketches of the people dwelling in the cold lands of Northern Europe, were intensely interesting and a sigh of disappointment that the speaker -did not farther extend his discourse, was inevitable at the conclusion of the lecture. , The ; Library Association deserve the thanks of "our citizens for furnishing them with so rare a treat as was served up on this occasion. We are glad to learn that their efforts were rewarded with about $50 over und above all expenses. i - . Thi A echo Panorama. This beautiful painting still remains at Apollo Hall. To say that it is a superior work of art would be faint praise, indeed, compared with its merits as an instructor. The scenes of the North are beautiful pictures, and from that portion of the' scenery around New York, with which we are familiar, and from Kane's works, we can but form an opinion about the accuracy of the Arctic pictures. . They are wonderful to look at, and give the reader of his book a much better and more lifelike' idea of the hardships euduted by the lioblu toiuuiaudor of the lat American Expedition in search of Sir John Franklin, while battling with the elements of the extreme Polar Sea. ' There will be an afteruoon exhibition for families . and children to-day at 3 o'clock, P. k., and another this eveniugr. ——>The gold fever is beginning to rage with fearful violence throughout Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. There are strong indications of a general stampede for Pike's Peak this Spring. Two companies, composed each of about one hundred men, under the direction of what is called the Indiana and Illinois Pike's Peak Mining Company, will start within a few weeks from Northern Indiana and the Illinois counties adjoining. From every part of these States we hear of the organization of companies for this new Eldorado. We presume the discovery of the Pike's Peak gold if it has no other result will tend to fill up Kansas Territory with a turbulent and discontented population. The result of the Frazer River excitement would tend to make our young men cautious, we should think, of how they venture on these golden expeditions. . We fear that the truth of the old adage all is not gold that glitters will be forced upon them in a manner fully as uupleasant as it will be profitable. ———<>——— CtäfLast wctek a girl named Julia Warner, living with ber mother, two miles West of Seneca Falls, N. Yn committed suicide by drowning herself in the river. Her body was found on Sunday afternoon, aad the Coroner was called to hold an inquest. From the evidence elicited, it seems that she had become enamored of a young man of -questionable character, and was upbraided by her mother for associating with him. This was more than her youthful heart could endure, and she informed her mother that she could no longer listen to ber hard words against one she loved. She invested herself of her hoop-skirls and a part of her clothing pot on her brother's coat, tied a shawl around her headV left the house, and was seen bo more till Sunday afternoon, wben the search was successful, and her body found in the river: A verdict of " Suicide by rowni ng," was rendered by the Coroner's jury.

Florer, arrived in Cincinnati on Wednesday, from Pittsburg, after about as remarkable a passage as any river craft has made on the Ohio. On Saturday last the boat was seized by the U. S. Marshal at Pittsburg, for debt, and the cylinder head and throttlevalve removed by the officer and concealed, thinking it would be impossible for her to leave port without them. Not so, however. The Captain had constructed of <hard wood> a throttle-valve and cylinder head, and while the authorities were confident of having the boat all secure, she put out for Cincinnati! At White's Riffle, twelve miles below Pittsburg, she run aground, and the odds were strongly in favor of her being overtaken by the Deputy Marshal, who had started with a steam-tug in pursuit. Fortune again favored thead venturous [sic] Captain, however, and the boat was got off after some delay, and proceeded on her journey, arriving at Cincinnati yesterday, with her wooden cylinder head and throttle-valve all right! The Telegraph, however, had made better time than the boat, and upon the Wenona poking her nose to the shore, she was seized by a Constable for a claim for debt. A Deputy Sheriff followed, and put his grapplings upon her for another claim. Then Deputy Marshal Mason walked down and slapped another legal plaster upon her at the suit of the Captain, for supplies furnished; and subsequently the same officer served an attachment issued out of the United States Court on behalf of the sundry seamen for wages. Whether her wooden throttle-valve and cylinder head will prove equal to the emergency, and take the boat out of the hands of the three or four officers who have her in charge, as easily as at Pittsburg, is quite a matter of doubt. The Silver Star did not arrive yesterday till afternoon. She was detained by the breaking of her wheel, and encountering a dense fog. She leaves again for Paducah on Monday at 12 o'clock. The Alvin Adams will be down during the day on her way to Memphis. The Scioto is due this morning from Henderson for Louisviile.
