SgThe third game of chess by telegraph between the Evansville and Vincennes clubs, which came off a day or two since, resulted in a "draw game. " ' Up to the 5th of February, Bayard Taylor had delivered sixty-four lectures in his winter course, without missing a singt appointment. gg.A son of the Revolutionary orator, Patrick Henry, is now living in Xenia, Ohio. He has attained to a very advanced age, but still continues quite an intelligent man. BÖS"" We understand that quite a number of the citizens of Henderson and other neighboring towns are expected to visit our city to-day, to hear the distinguished Lecturer and traveler. Our people will try to make room for them. Ä3F Yesterday, William Smith was arrested by Officer Unnold, for drawing a knife on a man named Raywood. He was "taken before Recorder Mills;, who, after investigating the matter, fined Iii in $3 and costs.. The prisoner, not having the funds to settle the bill, was committed to jail. The preparations which are being made by many property holders, indicate that great improvements are to occur in our city this spring, and during the summer. New houses will go up all over the city, and of quite a superior order such as are now in very great demand. The Southern Literary Mestenger announces that the first volume of the " Life of James Madison," which has been in preparation for some time past, by the Hon. .William C. Rives, is now ready for the press, and may be expected to appear early in the spring, probably from the bouse of Little, Brown & Co., Boston. '."JSP" The Vincennes Sua says there will be a greater number of buildings erected in Vincennes the coming season than any previous year in her history. Contracts are being made for a number of fiue business houses,' costly dwellings, &c. C'fgy Those of our citizens who happened to ba up early enough this morning, had an opportunity of beholding k total eulipse of the moon. The total darkness began at 18 minutes past 4 o'clock, and ended at 53 minutes past 5. The eclipse ended at 50 minutes past 6 o'clock. - ', ' ' Tus Weekly Jouuxal. During its sojourn in this city it lias ereated au interest seldom given to Pan1 oiaiuic exhibitions. Of this we feel confident, from the fact of its continued popularity, and the admiration which has been expressed by all who have witnessed it. 1 ' '-;-t We can see aurora borealis, the mirage . -and mock Buns, bastelled icebergs by uioonlight, piled up hammocks, made golden by the sun, and all the phenomena and woulers of that clime, with much more pleasure, with our summer clothes on, than the Arctic navigators did when encased in furs and ating two or three brace of ducks at a meal. This indeed was to be expected, as the whole continuous voyage waa executed by artists from original drawings taken on the spot by the various exülorers. " XS?" The Princeton Clarion man was in .town the other day for the first time, lie "spelled out all the signs along Main street, and at last went to the Jovrnat office. Here be says he saw the u ponderous steam press, a whirlin off the daily." "Sich a ite !" Wonder if friend Thayer didn't take him down to tho river to see the stupendous Trader. Enquirer. We owe an apology to the editor of the Clarion for not taking him to the Enquirer office to show him the old ' Rams go Press, " on which that paper is printed. After exhibiting all the modern improve' ments, we are .inexcusable for neglecting so valuable a relic of " ye olden time. " ' Bayard Taylor. Our readers will not forget Taylor's lec ture to-night at Crescent City Hall. It bids fair to be the most attractive night of the season, both in interest and the udience which will be present. Nothing short of a storm will prevent the hall from ; being filled toils utmost capacity, and we advise all who wish good seats to go early. Mr. Taylor is a national favorite ; everywhere he goes he fills to overflowing the , largest halls and gives universal satisfaction -"It will be seen by uotice in another place that the committee, at the request of a number of citizens, have made arrangements by which seats may be secured in advance.
gjgyln the Rockport Democrat , of - last week, R. S. Hicks, Esq., announces his withdrawal from that paper as its editor. Mr. Hicks, during the several years he has conducted the Democrat, has evinced a good deal of ability, as well as ft larger amount of independence than usually characterize editors of his party. He is at present filling the office of Clerk of the Court. The Democrat, in future, will be conducted by Mr. C. Jones, the able Representative of S;eucer county in our State Legislature.
ßtäyAlthough the city of Indianapolis is the possessor of three large cemeteries, wo notice that the Mayor of the city advertises for propositions to sell to the city a lot of ground for the establishment of a fourth. If grave yards are any criterious of health, the sanitary condition of that city must be bad. ft"- Notwithstanding the denial of the Washington Star, private circles still talk at tho capitol about the British Lord an J his rumored succeesful iiawon with a beautiful and accomplished lady, who is spending the winter there. ';- ' "' : ''' , tkS& The word "Opposition": will no longer serve to designate the opponents of the go-called Democracy, as there seems to be more "opposition" to the Administration within the ranks than among outsiders."
