This seems tobe "rather slow" for a State boasting so much intelligence and refinement. -A- gold watch and chain was presented to Frank Leslie at the Metropolitan, New York, on Tuesday, " in behalf of the mothers and children of New York," for his fearless action on the milk question. It is his evident ambition to live long euougli to do the niot harm to the country. ———<>——— SHOT HIMSELF.vWe understand that a passenger on the Moses McLellan, named Scott, while the boat was coming down, from Louisville yesterday, shot himself with a pistol, the ball penetrating his heart and killing him instantly. ———<>——— DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.—On Monday a German who was employed in Messrs. Grant & Knowles flouring mill at Millersburg, on the canal, had his arm torn off and his leg badly mangled, by being caught in some part of the machinery of the mill.— His recovery is doubtful. ———<>——— B We understand that a very interesting meeting is in progress at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church,- at this time. " I . i I Gamb Law. We notice that this law being energetically enforced in some portions of our State. An Indianapolis paper says that Henry liansing, a German youth, about sixteen years old, was lined $4 and costs, for shootiug quails last Souday. His father refused to bail him, aud he was locked up, until a brother-in-law, hearing of the circumstance, came forward and released him. fiMr. John Funk and M. P. Ritcker offer a valuable farm for sale, situated in the county of Henderson, Ky. It will be sold on easy terms, and the stock upou the premises sold at twelve ' months credit. The tract contains 525 acres ; 300 acres cleared and under cultivation. The soil is unusually fertile. All in all, it is a most desirable property, and we direct farmers to its advantages, as set forth iu the advertisement. The sale is to close a copartnership, aud will take place upon the premises on the 25th instant. Home Insurance Company, of New York. We notice in an article iu the Inmrance Monitor, an extract of which we append below, that the Home Company has added largely to its capital stock raising it from 600,000 to $1,000,000. Dr. A. C. Hallock is agent for this company in our city, and has for several years past been üauing fire policies, and also adjusting some pretty heavy losses all of which we are gratified to state have been promptly paid up. He has just received a commission from the Home Company, we are informed, to issue policies on inland navigation. Reed, United States Commissioner to China, had sailed on board the United States frigate Minnessota, err route tor home, via London Inoiaxapolis, Feb. 15 m. A collision ' occurred in the Senate this morning, between Senators Gooding, of Hancock, and lleffren, of Washington, iu consequence of some personal remarks made in the Senate same days ago. After seme fighting between the two Senators, a brother of Senator Gooding interfered and struck Keffren on the head with his cane, wounding him severely. Otherwise hut little injury was dona to either party. Gooding was armed with a revolver, but had no opportunity to use it. Heffren also drew a knife after he was struck with the cane, but, the Senators interfering, prevented him from using it. The gieatest excitement prevailed in the Chamber during the difficulty. While the steamer Adriatic, bound from St. Louis to New Orleans, was aground at Kinnie's Point, above Cairo, her crew were turning the capsian, when it broke. Three of the deck hands were knocked overboard and lost, and two others were badly in jured. The Silver Star is the regular packet for Paducah to-day. She starts at 12 o'clock. The Mississippi, at last accounts, was filled with floating ice. The city of New Orleans has encountered another drawback to her commerce. ' The Hiciith of the Mississippi isconstantly filling up, and at the last accounts there were only rlt'teeu feet water on the bar. Twenty-six vessels were inside the bar trying to get out ami nineteen outside endeavoring to enter. Memphis dates of the 9th report the river falling. Weather unpleasant. No arrangements had yet been made to supply the place ot the F.clipse in the Memphis aud New Orleans trade. The John Simonds was to have left oa the 9th with 2,500 bales of cotton. The Southeruer will be down to-day ou her way to Memphis. The well known craft, J. H. Done, formerly of the Evansville aud Cairo packet trade, and lately of the Parkersburgh and Cincinnati trade, and which was purchasad a few days ago at Wheeling, by Capt. Lew. Davis and otheis of this city, passed Cincinnati ou Monday night last, bound for this port. We understand that she will be placed in her old (Evanjville and Cairo) trade.
