Caleb B. Smith li soon to remove from Cincinnati to Indianapolis, for the purpose of practicing law. He will be quite an accession to the legal talent of the State. fifgr We understand that Messrs McNeely a Defrees, of Terr Haute, intend starting a Tlour Barrel Manufactory in this city as toon as they can erect a building for that purpose These geutlemen bare a factory of this kind at Terra Haute, where they are doing an extensive business. They are responsible and energetic business men ; and as fit is their design to engage in the business i this point on a large scale, their eormng will add to the, general prosperity of the ity. . ; ; , ' ' . fgJThe maa arrested for committing an wutrage upon a girl a day or two since, gave bis same at the hotel where be was stopping as 0. W. Woodford, mud uut Howard, as stated in yesterday's Journal. . tie also says he is from Shelby ville, Ky. The girl states that she was deeoyed by b im to a place on the canal, near the Central Market, and not to a room in the Washington Hotel. The prisoner, after his arrest, waived an examination, and was committed to jail. t2SFThe Enquirer, of yesterday, patronizingly copies some remarks of the Cineinnati Enquirer in reference to the Homestead Bill. The Utter paper is astonished that otily thirty-eight Democrats voted for it white sixty voted against It. It says the men from Iudlaoa who votsA against it, will find it hard work to be re-elected to the next Congress. f We are sura Mr. Niblack never anticipated such cold comfort from a home organ. Tf. " -. -. n ... . fiÖS" A young maa named Oeorge Heuslis was shot at Manchester, in Dearborn county, in this State, under the following circumstances. He, with several others, was Juseping watch at the house of bis uncle, Elias Beustis, which had been infested with burglars for several nights; and while entering the house, after having gone out to reconnoiter, was mistaken for a depredator by one of the guards, and shot in the breast. It is feared he will die. Bga, Several of the " important ones " of the State have been indulging in a fox .chase at Indianapolis. Poor Reynard was eaptured after a chase of seve:.al hours. The sport was represented to be most exciting, and the first of the kind that has probably occurred for years in that section of the country. The Stale Sentinel says " however .much some may be disposed to discredit the story, we can say in the language of a friend of immortal memory, there is 'no . folly foxing' about it." . 4ßjTBy reference to our regular telegraphio dispatches, it will be seen that the Democracy at Washington City are in sore distress. AH kinds of expedients are resorted to, in hopes of dodging the tariff question, but it ia no go. The Pennsylvanians have set their heads upon aa increase of duties fptcifiejiX that and nothing else will satisfy. la the eancus held at the -Capitol on Wednesday evening, Mr. Crawford, of G a., proposed resolutions, the first of which declared it to be inexpedient and unnecessary to disturb the tariff of 1837. This resolu tion was rejected by the emphatic vote of yeas 27, nays 35 some members present not voting. This vote is significant. Disagreeable as it is to the free-traders, it now seems pretty certain that they will have to endorse a Protective Tariff. .. 5? Tha investigation into th affairs of ih Navy Department, is said to bring to Sight facts perfectly astounding. Peculation that been extensively carried out In every Department. Bven the paint belonging to Government has been used for brightening tip tha honse of Congressman Searing. W. "D. Kennedy, one of the Tammany sachems, .says a correspondent of the New York Times, has secured the contract for furnishing Gov rnmeut with paints for some time past. It seems that in putting in his bids, he woull offer large quantities of certain articles at ridiculously low prices, and muck less indeed than they could possibly be pur chased for. In this way, ha was enabled to put it in steep in many other articles, and yet have the aggregate for the average lower than that of any other bidder, and se cure the contract. The thlnir, upon tha face, of course, looks very fairly, but on ex amination we find that of the articles offered at nominal prices, the master painter never ' wanted a pound, while of those put in at high prides, government was sure to need a supply. Of course this is all to be attributed to Kennedy's luck, and not a bit of It to collusion between himself and the niagtr painter ; but one way or other Uncle .Sam, between the two. has beeu victimize.! iD0t gratfclesely.

He urged the importance of harmony as esseatial to the success of the Democratic party ; arguing that they should have a common ground on which to stand.' - ' Mr. Bowie, of Maryland, gave notice of his intention to introduce a resolution declaring that the Democratic party ought to adhere to its ancient policy of a tariff strictly for revenue. ; That a tariff calculated to raise $40,000,000 could be arranged on the basis of an expenditure of $65,000,000, and that it is the duty of all honest men, without distinction of party, to unite ou an adjustment such a) would benefit the country. Mr. Clay, of Ky.; said that ho was, not present to dictate to the Democratic party. Not long ago he was called a yearling Democrat, and he was, of course, but little more than a twoyear-old now. But he wished to say that tho question of the tariff was above all parties ; one in which the entire country is concerned, therefore he hoped it would be adjusted in accordance with this sentiment. Mr. McRae. of Miss., gave notice of the introduction of a resolution laying down certain fundamental, constitutional, principles, and hoping to instruct the Committee on Ways and Means, as the sentiment of the caucus, to report 0. bill lorying direct taxes. Mr. Boycc, of S. He spoke of its importance to Pennsylvania. He would not be satisfied without some reasonable adjustment. Mr. Stewart, of Md., favored an increaso of the customs, and especially taxing articles of the free list of the present tariff. Mr. Cavanagh moved to lay the whole subject on the table.
