fgy The suggestion made by the canal meeting at Toledo last wee that a convention be held, composed of delegates from the sections of country interested in the preservation of the 'Wabash and Erie canal, is worthy of .consideration. Such a meeting, if the members from each county would go prepared to give full and correct information in regard to the condition of the canal its past management its business the repairs and improvements required in their immediate neighborhoods, a . mass of information might be collected that would show the people of the State wrhat steps ought to be taken to save the work ; at the same time the expose would lay open to the bondholder the neglect of their interests by their Trustees, and convince them of the necessity of an immediate change in the administration of the trust.' Meetings hare been held at Fort Wayne and Logansport on the subject. At Fort Wayne a committee Was appointed to prepare a petition asking the Legislature to adopt, at this session, such measures as will secure the permanent maintenance of the canal, in case of its abandonment by the bondholders. The people everywhere seem opposed to any appropriations by the State to the canal, while held by the bondholders. There would be no guarantee, under its present administra tion, for the faithful application of the mon ev which would it is feared, be consumed in the payment of enormous salariesto the IL-. u ,:,- ini mere nuuuugs im its oHices; it would only e preparing me - . . But in a lease ortransfer, the Fort Wayne Times suggesU that there may be a very serioiis and imminent danger to the Canal, it the legislature should pass a law to authorize the bondholders to transfer or lease the rwi tn tt pnmnnnv. the railroad interests, - L- w i i with which it competes, would buy it up, or get control of it, and fix its tolls in accord-. ance with the tariffs of their railroad freights. "Such an opportunity would be just what is desired by railroad interests, whose agents and operators are innumerable, and their power, like that of the banks, lias become almost irresistible in the State. People already talk of our member of the Supreme Court as the " Railroad Judge," and of others as the " Bauk Judges.'' The Times continues, Over legislative' bodies " their power is immense, and ro individual or set of individuals, in" their ordinary., capacity, are at all in tneir way. .uoney win oe i poured in by the hundred thousand, the best talent secured, and every appliance used which ingenuity can invent aud use, all of 1 which we would warn our people asainst I but uree them to treat the matter as it de serves, aud our Representatives aud Sena tor to tear not to taiK or it, as ao dema gogues.' At Logansport a resolution was offered at the meeting, instructing the Representatives and Senator from the county to vote for a bill to release the bondholders from further obligation to maintain the Canal lying south of Terra Haute, if the bill could be so drawn as t protect the liability, even by implication, to pa' any thing for it. The proposition led to a very lively discussion, iu which several prominent citizens took a zealous part. The speakers all agreed in the pro- . After a warm debate, the meetiug was adjourned to 'one day iu the present week. A lease or transfer of the Northern portion of the Canal, it is fear ed, would result iu placing that portion un der the control of the Wabash ' Valley "Rail road Co.,- whose interests would be pro moted by rendering the Canal unnayigable. But tluf Southern- Division has aroiile so exclusively . its own: which interferes so little with the .business of the E. & C. In addition, the files of both Houses have been lumbered up with the propositions and .bills upon Kl most every conceivable topic, nearly all of which are impracticable, and which will necessarily occupy a good deal of time to consider and get rid of. . i.. -.'.st v.5 ' To punbh the idleness of members, the Sentinel proposes to take all the desks and chairs out of the Legislative Halls, and furDish the members with wooden benches, which it thinks would have the effect to confine their attention to the business before them, and to urge it through, in order to get away from their uncomfortable seatd. Bgu We learn that a portion of the i-itir iens of the upper part of Spencer and the lower part of. Perry, have commenced a movement having for its object the forma tion of a new couuty the public buildings to b located at Troy. The project is doubt less agitated to prevent the removal of the county seat of Perry to Cannelton. It will be recollected there is a special clause in the constitution authorizing the formation of the proposed new eonnty. It is singular that a constitution that prohibited local acta of Legislation contained a clause pro viding for a local measure. The citizens of Perry are indebted, we believe, for this sin gular . constitutional provision, to the influence of their delegate in the convention, J. P. Dunn, Esq.
