Affecting Scksr in Cocbt. Jacob Shus-

ter, alias Tom Hand, who has spent some thirty years of his life in prison, was again I coavicted in Philadelphia on Friday last.He was charged with forging a hank note plate of the Bank of Deleware County, Pa., and a $10 note on the same institution. The Enquirer says : . ' ; , .'. Düriner the whole trial of the case the most lirely interest has been manifested in it by the public, ana tne uouri room n&s been crowded from day to day with eager spectators." Among the number wno close ly watched the progress ot tne trial, were three daughters of the defendant They were genteel, intelligent looking laaies, ana demeaned themselves witn marked dignity Bnd respect towards the Court. Modest and retiring in their conduct, bat watching with a keen, eagle eye, every step- taken in the case. Durins the last stage of the trial they were near. their father, who was confined in the dock, as if to protect him from the pow er of the evidence ol guilt which seemed to overwhelm him.. . When the jury returned toourt they were near him, and with tear ful eyes and palpitating hearts waited the result of the verdict, which they dared not hope would be one of not guilty. When it was announced, a deep cry of anguish escaped them, and ,"0h, pray, forgive him," was the only plea offered in his behalt. They clung fondly about his neck, and though he was stamped as a felon, and his character black with his crimes, yet to those loving children it was pure and spotless. It was a sad sight, and no one who witness ed it could refrain from tears, not but what they were satisfied of the justice of the ver dict, but the thought that a man should so wilfully hurl his family into disgrace and infamy by his crimes. . -. ' - Tha (iovemor't Veto. The reasons for the Governor's veto of the bill for continuing the old Sinking Fund Commissioners in . office till April, is pub lished in the Slate Sentinel : The objection is, that the bill is nnconsti tutionaL in that it attempts to lengthen the term of these officers by a legislative act, and not by a vtv voce election of both Housei of the General Assembly, as re quired by the constitution. With the expi ration of the incorporated existence of the old State Bank on the 1st of January, the terms of all the officers created nnder that charter expire with it. The official career of the Prsidentof tha Bank and the Sink ing Fund Commissioners then terminates. Col. Dumont was elected President of the Bank for five years from the 13th of Feb ruary, 1854, but with the termination of the legal existence of that institution on the 1st of January, his official connection with it must likewise cease. As the Legislature will again assemble at its regular session on the 7th of January, the failure of the law- ie- a. matter of but little consequence. We understand that Mr. Ray, the Cashier of the State Bank and Secretary of the Board of Sinking Fund Commissioners, who has had, in fact, the chief management of the funds heretofore, will hold them un til the Legislature makes some final dispo sition of ibem. Keeping the Bbais Fallow is Child hood. When we are considering the health of children, it is imperative not to omit the importance of keeping their brain tallow, as it were, for several years of their existence. The mischiefperpetrated by a contrary course in the shape of bad health, peensli temper, and developted vanity, is incurable. Soxie infant prodigy, which is a standard of mis chief through this neighborhood, misleads them. But parents may be assured that this early work is not by any means all gain even in the way of work. I suspect is it a loss, and that children who begin their education late, as it could be called, will rapid ly overtake those who have been in harness long before them. And what advantage can it be tnat a child knows more at six years old than his compeers, especially if this is to be gained by a sacrifice of health, which may never been gained t There may be some excuse for this early book-work, in the case of those children who are to live bv manual labor. It is Worth while, perhaps, to run the risk of some physical injury to them having only theit early years in which we ean teach them book knowledge. The chance of mischief, too, will be less being more hkely to be counteracted by their after life. But a child who is to be at book work for the first twenty-one years of bis life, what folly it is to exhaust, iu the least, its mental energy, which, after all, is its surest implement. - - Steel Castings. A method lias reeentlv been devised by which wrought iron can. ba melted, and poured into moulds, producing castings which retain all the toughness and qualities belonging to wrought iron. Scrap or wrought iron may be employed, or bars or plates cut into small pieces, these being melted 111 crucibles such as are used for melting blistered steel. To a charge suitable in amount to the crucible, one-half of one per cent, of charcoal (by weight), one per cent." of manganese, and one of red ammonia are added. The whole 13 covered from the atmosphere and melted in a temperature of about fifteen hundred degrees Fahrenheit, which temperature is main tained tor three hours. The metal is then ponied into the moulds. The iron thus cast is so malleable as to be capable of being treated under the . hammer in the forge and thus part of the iron may be shaped in moulds and part completed by forging, producing ornamental work. Lbt hb Kiss Him for lira Mother." The editor of the New Orleans Advocate has this incident about the ravages of the yellow fever in that city related to him by one of the Methodist pastors : k ' - . The preacher was called a few days since, to attend the fuueral of a young man. Be fore his sickness, ne was a stout, buoyant, manly youth. He was from the State of Maine, and had been here but a short time. He was attacked by yellow fever, and soon died, with no mother or relation to watch by his bedside, or to soothe him with that sympathy which none bat those of our own "dearest kindred blood " can feel or manifest He died amoLg strangers aud was buried by them. When the funeral service was over, and the strange friends who had ministered to him were about to finally close the coffin, an old lady who stood by stopped them and said, " Let me kiss him for his mother." We have yet to find the first man or woman to whose eye this simple recital has not brought tears.

Thb End of an Adültbhess. One of th j editors of the Hagerstown Torchlight, who i

was recently on a visit to Baltimore, among other things, says : '''. In the Baltimore Alms-house there is a woman spending the evening of her days, who once filled a large but unenviable space in. the public eye. We allude to Kachel Cunningham, who ensnared the affec tions of four husbands, and in a snort time effected separations from three of them and their wives; the fourth, a former sheriff of this county, sacrihced to her everyining, fortune, honor, fame, and for her became a felon, and for her died a leion s aeatn. Under an assumed nam e she is now eking out a miserable existence in this institution, and probably making some atonement for her lamentable conquests over connubial honor and domestic peace in early life.
