A The citizejiB of Petersburg, Worthington, and Newberry, on the line of the canal, alarmed at the indications of an ' intention to abandon j the Southern portion of the canal, hare held large public meetings . . . to determine what steps where necessary to prevent being Bhut out from all revenues of transportation to the jooMlteU of the com-, 1 mercial world, for their -rich agricultural products. One influential citizen of Pike county, writing to the Petersburg Importer says: It appears by recent developments that : our worat fears are about to be realized, respecting the abandonment of the Southern '' '' - division of the Wabash and Erie Canal by the Trustees. . It is said that the canal, at best, is poor dependence, in consequence of ;' the uncertainty of navigation, occasioned .' in the first place by the frail and imperfect
manner of its construction, ana seconaiy, Dy the inefficiency and negligence of a majority of those who are employed to keep it in repair. But then, poor as it is, and badly as it has been managed, it is the only facility afforded us, for ' the transportation of produce, lumber, coal, and general merchandise, except by the hazardous operation of flatboating down White River and Patoka, which is an age behind the times. The grave question nowrces itself npon us, what shall we do ? Will we in tike county quietly fall back to. the "days of , yore,'' in the conveyance of all our goods and praduce in wagons and ' flat-boats, whilst the adjoining counties are belted with the metal , track, and our neighbors of Gibson, Knox, and Daviess are every' day saluted by the thunder of the " iron herse," and the rumbling of railroad ears 1 What i3 the best for us to do under these discour- ' aging circumstances? This is an important inquiry an interrogatory of serious import a question which demands our calm and dispassionate consideration, followed by a . . unanimous response, and prompt efficient action. " All will admit that it is necessary for us to do'something, and that we do it speedily ; f ' for we have all learned by long experience that it is the height of folly to place any , confidence ia the canal. ' We have flattered ourselves year after year that it will work better after a while but instead of improving it is all the time getting worse. It is ia such a wretched condition that no sane man ' will willingly risk his property upon it to go a distance of fifty miles ; if he does, there is no certainty that it will reach its intended l" destination in three months. - . - v This beine our situation we will be forced
to seek ajinore convenient and reliable outlet for the various , commodities which are beg- . ging for market from this county.. " I proDose the building of a railroad from Peters-bure-h to the most convenient point on the Ohio and Mississippi Road." The distance from Petersburerh to Washington is about thirteen miles. . and to Vincennes about twenty miles. It is thought by some that the route to Vincennes is the most practicable of the two, considering the ground, and the amount of stock which can be raised there over and above what we may expect to ob tain in Washington. At Newberry a large meeting was held on the 15th inst., to take into consideration the expediency of constructing a branch railroad to Washington, in Daviess county, to intersect the Ohio and Mississippi Radroad. A number of spirited speeches were made, and a good dealj of enthusiasm was aroused in favor of the project. Resolutions were tmsscd dedarinctthat the citizens of ft the county had lost all hope in the final completion of the Straight Line Railroad, and all confidence in the canal as a moans of ' transportation for the products of the county to a market ; they were, therefore, iptorminftd to use all tho'-influence and money in their power to construct a railroad . from Newberry to Washington. Large and respectable committees were appointed to promote the object to solicit aid to meet the citizens of Washington, and to consult and arrange the preliminaries for the enter prise. The citizens of Washington, and of Green county generally, appear to sympä-. thize in the movement. . These ' proceedings are matters of deep concern to our citizens, for though there may be no immediate prospect of getting a rail road through these fertile districts to the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad, which would carry off the important trade of Green, Pike and Clay counties from this city to Cincinnati Ithe deserintion of it sueeests a real danger that is worthy of our consideration. If the Southern section of the canat were to be closed, and the people of those counties should be reduced to the primitive mode of nulling their products over mud roads to a point for shipment, they would inevitably go 15 or 20 miles to the Ohio & Mississippi Rail road instead of coming 100 miles to the Ohio river. If, therefore, the canal goes down, the trade of the important counties of Pike, Green and Clay will be lost in a great meas ure, to Evansville, whether a branch railroad through them to Washington be ever con structed or not. Unless we can keep up the navigation of the canal, or finish the ntrnicrht-line railroad, the trade of the White o river valley will surely desert us. It is undoubtedly true that the Trustees contemplate the abandonment of the entire line of the '. canal, as sosn as they have ex hausted the land fund; and the Southern sections will be the first to be given up, as the most expensive and yielding the least revenue. It is well to consider what ought m l done in such an event. In the discus sions which the subject has elicited in Pike and Green counties, we see that a suggesv tiou is made to fornr a local eompany to aid Sbe Trustees in keeping the divisions from ' ' ieerry to Evansville in navigable order. If t-hev-ija placed under efficient and .judicious convit u believed, this part of he canal could os,ftQe te support itself ; ,it the citizens alongNUne anfi in this city had better, it is said, button to maintain it to decay. annual contrirmit it .to ko 8Gen. aiMiOu Minister to Mexico Mr. Forsythe, though he dosed his legation in Jlexico refusing to have any inter
course with the existing Government at the capital and came home, acd is now at his residence ia Alabama, persists in holding on to his commission, and claiming to be still the Minister to the Republic of Mexico, and entitled to his salary. It appears most unfortunate, at this critical period in the affairs of. that distracted, country, in whose destinies we are . so intimately interested, that we should! ' have no representative at the seat of its central government, to watch the ' course of events, and by friendly influence and counsels, mitigate some of the evils of its intestine feuds ; and avail ourselves of circumstances to secure the advantages of free trade with' the country. While the English and French are represented by active agents, seeking peculiar advantages for themselves, our government seems stupidly indifferent to the deep concern we have in the events now transpiring there. The N. Y. Herald justly says : . Our course towards Mexico is plain. We must lend our moral countenance and our diplomatic assistance to the support of her independence. If we take this position, we can then rightfully prevent the powers of Europe from interfering in her affairs. The future of Mexico must be worked out by the Mexicans themselves. They constitute some eight or ten millions of people, who have in their midst much to destroy which they can only destroy, a church mortgage on the real estate of the nation, obtained withont a consideration or an equivalent. Feudal privileges on the part of landlords, classes, dis tinctions ; and tribunals tor the priest and soldier, superstitions and also . principles, deep rooted in the minds of the people, and many other evils, which they themselves can and will root out, but which would only be confirmed and protected by the sentiment of nationality if the attempt were made by a stranger. fi2?Ju9tice is surely no longer evenhanded in the courts at Indianapolis. As an il lustration of bow it is dealt out iu that city we see it stated in the Indianapolis papers that George W. Scott, a youth from Hancock county, who was indicted for stealing a com fort or bed-quilt worth not over $3, was sen tenced to the penitentiary for one year, disfranchised for two years, and fined three dollars. Prosper Hobbs, aged 15, one of the (ran a: of housebreakers who have been committing depredations in the city for sev eral months, was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment in the county jail for ten days. Franklin Ott, aged 14, - was cleared. Seerist, aged 15, another of the notorious gang, was sentenced to ten days imprison ment in the county jail. . It ia urged that it would be improper to send these boys to the Penitentiary, and that, as there are no houses of correction for juvenile offenders, the jury did the best they could under the circumstances, and set the boys at liberty. But why did they imprison . young Scott in the peni tentiary for stealing an old quilt T We presume the answer is, the poor fellow had neither money nor friends. ' Such justice is a mockery. Society at Wabhinqtos. The present is a very dull season in iaauionaDie tue at Washington. From all accounts it seems that the Capital, as far as society is con cerned, is as dreary as Goldsmith's Deserted Villaee. There are none : of the lights of the fashionable .world illuminating tue at mosphere, no parties, few dinners and very little social festivity of any kind. The hotels and taverns are almost empty, and the shopkeepers can only suck their thumbs, consoling themselves with the souveniers of the victims of brighter times, and hoping for future plunder. The lobby is in great distress. Con cress has cot an attack of economy, and contracts instead of expand ing. The poor fellows of the Third House are hanging about the Capital, hoping to scrape together a few dollars with which to pay their tavern scores, and then sneak off to their homes. " - - Louisiana Senator. The election of U S. Senator takes place in Louisiana on the fourth Monday in January. VMr. Slidell has abandoned Mr. Benjamin, and is exerting himself in favor of Mr. Sandage, member of the House from the Northern part of the state. The New Orleans Delta says it is very evident that Mr. Soule is the favorite at New Orleans, and that the various ele ments of opposition to Slidell throughout the State are likely to unite in Soule's supnort. Under these circumstances, the chances of the election of the latter are de cidedly good. Taxbs is Xivr Yonic. The assessment of taxes in New York for 1339. amounts to nearly $8,000, 000,about equal to the amount of taxation in the large and wealthy State of Ohio. The items of expenditure are as follows : A million for the police. A million for water. Eight hundred thousand for the poor. A million and a quarter for schools. A milliou and a half for streets. Half a million fer light. One million threw hundred thousand for the State. Six hundred thousand for salaries. Stair Loah roa th Jakuary Ikterist.
