. The Iron- Batine. VoJuntarjassociatiohsfor the collection of statistics do a valuable service to every coamonity wher they art formed f " and though the labor may be prompted by individual interests, and the facts be sought for a particular object, they can be turned to some account by every one to whose knowledge they cose. The association of coal owners, recently convened in this city, collected some facts in regard to the manufacture of iron, and the future prospects of that branch of business which would create on the Ohio River, in another generation, one of the principal demands for coal. From the facts laid before them by G. E. Sellers, Esq., formerly an extensive iron master, and now President of the Saline Coal Company, the coal men were persuaded that the coal field that embraced their mines,' extending from Cloverportto the mouth of the Cumberland, must inevitably become the largest iron manufacturing district on the continent, and that the home consumption of coal for steam, the making of iron, and for other manufactures, would,in another generation, equal the capacity of their coal mines to guddIv. rast as that now appears to be. If v i, er r - the facts justify the flattering predictions of the coal , men, they present equally encouraging hopes to. the land-owner, the farmer the artizan, laborer, and business man No one can fail to be interested in them. By returns from the celebrated furnaces on Lake Champlain, and the smelting furnaces on the North River, and in New Jer sey and Eastern Pennsylvania, the cost of j the transporting to the furnace, after tbey were mined, the materials for the produc tion of iron, t viz the ore, the lime stone, and the coal was equivalent to $4 60 and 3 per ton On the iron product. To all these Eastern furnaces the coal has to be brought from one direction the lime-stone for fluxes, from another, and . some one of the varieties of ore which they are obliged to combine to produce a good article, is to be sought at a distance from the smelting fur nace. The collection of these crude mate rials involves a heavy expense in the transportation .alone. At the well known and profitable Cam bria furnaces, in Pennsylvania, one of the most eligibly located smelting furnaces in the Alleghany range, the hauling ot the materials to the tunnel head, for a ton of its excellent iron, costs one dollar and eighty cents ; and the expense of transporting a ton of pig metal from the Cambria works to Pittsburg, is $1 50 per ton j making the whole cost of transporting the material to the furnace, and the iron to navigable waters, 3 30 per ton At the eastern furnaces, after paying this heavy cost for the transportation of the ma terial, pig metal can be produced for about $15 or $16 per ton. At the Cambria works it is made at a cost of about $11 per ton. The cost of mining the ores and getting tbe fluxes and coal to the furnacs in Ohio, Western. Virginia and.Kentucky, place those works about upon an equality of advantages with the eastern iron manufacturers. In Missouri, which abounds in the richest iron ores and abundant coal miles, the materials for the production of iron are separated by wider distances and expensive transporta tion. The iron mountain is to be disem boweled, and its heavy ores to be carried to St. Louis to meet the coal from another dis tant field.. As two tons of ore, two tons of coal, and one of limestone, are necessary to make a ton of pig metal, the expense of collecting these from points one hundred miles asunder, must be equal to one-third the value of iron. The rich deposits of ore around Lake Superior as far as ii known are located far from any coal field, and no Xorests can oow be depended upon to smelt iron in quantities to meet modern de-' mauds for the article, After surveying these rich fields of miner al wealth, the coal men return to our own region, and find two and sometimes three variteies of ore, with coal and limestone, lying in juxtaposition, and sometimes iuterstratified with each other. In the con tiguous position of the materials for the production of iron, we have an advantage in many of our localities equivalent to Sia ti S4 ner ton. or 25 ocr cent upon the Y - t ' " . cos of the iron. In Southern Illinois, some most remarkable developments have been made. Along the course of Saline river, in the counties of Hardin and Gallatin, shafts have been sunk through ' eight superincumbent workable veins of coal, whose united thickness is about 32 feet. Interstratified with these seams of coal are five brands of iron ore which can be mined and taken out of the shafts with the cool.' In4he adjoining hills are endless deposits of other varieties of ores with limestone for fluxes. As vast in quantity Tas this, immense coal deposit ap pears to be, it is calculated that the coal would all be required to smelt the iron that surrounds it. . In tbe opinion of the eml nent geolog'st, D. D. Owen and his judg ment is coufirmed by the estimates of prac tical men iron can be made in that region f jr one quarter less that it can be produced in the Great Western Iron Works. If by the increase of duties and the adoption of scien tific duties, a new impetus be given to the iron business, and urpital' shall seek invest ment once mare in smelting furnaces, Southwestern Indiana, Middle Kentucky, and Southern Illinois will be the theatres for vast enterprises in the iron business no region of the world can compete with its combination of advantages. Taking the simple facts collected by the coal men and collated as a basis of estimates by these practical men for the management of their business if the manufacture of iron is at one time to require even one-third of the product of our coal fields to supply its demand-
what brilliant visions of active industry and prosperity does the calculation present for the contemplation of the statesman, economist and to the citizens and land owners of this section of the country ?
Legislative Proceedings. The President laid before the Senate a communication from tho Auditor of State, in answer to a resolution of the Senate as to whether any legislation was necessary for the re-imbursement, by the Free Banks, of the expenditure made for them in the Bank Department of the Auditor's office, by the State authorities, which was referred to tho Committee on Banks. A temperance memorial was presented by Mr. Steele. Tho Committee on Benevolent Institutions was instructed to inquire into the expediency of erecting Houses of Refuge for juvenile offenders. Sundry resolutions were offered ; one for the protection of sheep, one on adjourning, one on abolishing the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction,' one for encouragement to the people for raising sheep, and one to take up messages from the House. Mr. Wallace presented a bill regulating the mode of choosing U.S. Senators, prescribing the time, place, &c. . The bill proposes a mode of choosing U. S. Senators, by tbe General Assembly, in conforming to the Constitution of the Uni ted States. ' Its leading feature is a novel onCf Tiz . providing a plan by which the voters at large can designate to whom they want the Legislature to choose U. S. Senators. Mr. Cravens introduced a bill to change the time for the election of members of Congress ; Mr. Loroax one to amend an act for the election of township assessors, and for the valuation and assessment of the real pro perty of the State. One by Mr. Jones' to provide compensation to persons who bring to justice fugitives of tho law ; Mr. Ileffren one to prevent the destruction of eheep and other stock by dogs. All these bills passed the first reading. Several Honse bills passed their first read ing. Mr. HefFren's bill relative to the enforce ment of the free negro clause of our consti tution, was referred to a Select Committee. Little else was done. In the House various petitions were pre sented. Mr. Dobbins submitted the following, which was adopted : Whereas, Section second of article 9th of the Constitution of the State, declares that "the General Assembly shall provide Houses of Refuge, for the correction and reforma tion of juvenile offenders ; and, hereas, recent developments admonish us of the increase of this character of offenders; and W hereas. it is unwise and impolitic to send such youthful outlaws to the State Prison, to mingle with tbe old, experienced, and hardened creatures of crime, such as are usually sent to that instititution ; Therefore be it Resolved, That the Speaker is hereby authorized to appoint a select committee, consisting of one member from each Con gressional Districtin the State, whose duty it shall be, at as early a day as possible, to report a bill to this House, which, in the language of the Constitution, f shall provide Houses of Refuge for the correction and reformation of juvenile offenders;" Provided, That 'here shall not be more than five nor less than three of such Houses erected, and that the same shall be located in various part of the State. Tbe use of the Hail was granted the State Teachers' Association, for holding their an nual meeting. Two or three bills were introduced regu lating the sale of intoxicating drinks. Mr. Smith, of Perry, introduced a bill supplemental to the act providing for the relocation of county seats, relocation of highways, 4c, approved March 2, 1855, and providing for relecotion of county seats, where lands and Court-houses have been donated, and petition filed, wnich was read through and passed the first reading. Sewi Snmmary, ' 8$u Navigation on the New York canals has been brought to close. . A few of the boats were caught in tbe ice. The constitutionality of the Massa chusetts law declaring the unlicensed traffic in liquors a nuisance, has been sustained by a recent decision of the Supreme Court of that State. B3 Gen. Cass is said to be very feeble. He is often confined to his room, and is compelled to forego all the heavy labor in YV ashington. J5a? It is said to be pretty certain that Senator Hunter, of Virginia, will be the Administration candidate for President, before the Charleston Convention. The President has expressed himself in Mr. Hunter's favor. 82?" Tobacco has been introduced into Minnesota with success. A planter from Virginia, who has located at Belle Plain, Minnsota, having made on experimental crop, regards the yield as more profitable, and over the average in v irginia. I he tobacco, however, is said tobe only a "fair," not a fine or superior quality. BglThe forthcoming festival at the Academy of Music in New York, promises to be one of the greatest social events of the Eeason. On the first day, December 18, a morning and evening performance will be given at the Academy, which will unite all the most distinguished names of the theatrical and musical world. Grand tableaux will be added to this entertainment. On December 21, the grand ball is to be given, and from all accounts this will be a scene of fairy magnificence. A mammoth orchestra com posed of one hundred musicians, will fur- ! ish the music of tbe occasion. . This regulation has long been asked by the more respectable hackmen, and they promise that in a short time there will be very little con- i fusion at the railroad depots and Steamboat landings, and that there will be no more' bullying and ruffianism from the drivers. , Heenan a challenge to Morrisey, or . to any Other man in the World, to fight for ; $10,000, has created the liveliest kind of excitement among the fancy. The champion, To S-iycr, is not unlikely to be a visitor to America next summer.. The match for 2,000 a side that was to come off in Florida, between Kelly and Coburri, ha3 come to an end, the latter paying a forfeit of 50. EcS A magnificent project is on foot for supplying the Kanawha river with water during the dry Beason. About ten miles from Lewisburg, are the spurs of the Sewell mountains. In this vicinity is to be erected a huge reservoir, covering an area of 50,000 acres. The reservoir is to be supplied hy eight streams that empty into the Gawley river. The survey has just been completed by Charles Ellett, Esq., at a cost of $5,000. Mr. Ellett calculates that six inches of water drawn from the reservoir, will raise the Kanawha river four feet. Mr. Ellett speaks in the most confident manner of the entire practicability of the undertaking, and that it will fully meet the expectations of its friends. The reservoir is to be formed by building a dam from one hill to the other, 60 feet high, of solid masonry, across one of the tributaries of tho Gawley River. E2T"Judge Thacher, the old and esteemed editor of the Shelby Volunteer, died at his residence in Shelbyviile on Friday night last. He has been connected with the Volunteer for 15 years, and exercised a decided influence in the political affairs of the county and district. He was highly esteemed as a man and a citizen, and Jhis death is deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends nnd admirers. BST Jt is said that Senator Bright was active in the plot to deprive Mr. Douglas of the Chairmanship of the Committee on Territories, and that Mr. Douglas will repay the ill natured service by moving in the Indiana Senatorial question.
