EVANSV1LLE, IND. SATURDAY MORNING NOVEMBER 27

From Indianapolis. We have letters from Indianapolis that jay the coalition of the Republicans with the Independents and anti-Lecomptonites is not likely to be a desirable union. It is already disturbed by serious differences of iews and plans. The writers say the Republicans have gained but little discretion and moderation by the lessons of the past Their intolerant spirit and ultra measures are likely to drive from them, all moderate and conservative men. It is said the independents and anti-Lecompton Democrats will form a union, and vote upon measures according to their own convictions of duty, without heed to the schemes and wishes of either of the other contending parties. They have the power to control both, and can direct the course of Legislation in a great degree, and upon them will fall the responsibility of the leading measures that may be adopted. On "Wednesday the Senate adopted a resolution, by a vote of 26 to 22, declaring the election of Bright and Fitch to be illegal, unconstitutional, and void, and that Indiana has no leeral Senators in Congress. This resolution was to have been taken up in the House yesterday, and probably excited an animated debate. "We learn that it was expected Mr. Blythe would make a speech on the subject, from which we shall learn the views and probable course of the Independents and anti-Lecomptonites, in regard to the Senatorial question. The leading Re pubheans, we arc informed, were in favor of going into an immediate election of Senators to contest the seats of the present iucmnbents. . if"A partizan spirit ha3 already mani fested itself in the State Senate, and will, no doubt, greatly interfere with the legitimate business that should press upon that body. Black Republicans and Black Deniocracy seem to bother gentlemen now, and takc3 np much more of their time, than the revenues of the State, and other needful laws that

were neglected at the Inst session of tho Legislature. More anxiety is manifested as to I what shall be the future political complexion

I of the State, than for a pjood school law. It

costs the State double as much money discussing the merits t f pint ies, t him tor . 'ill the laws put together. The "host ot tue Miller ana filtryoi k con tested election case, has been invoked again, to haunt the Senate and drive business from that body. It is to be hoped that it II attempts to bring up these agitating topics, to the exclusion of morn urgent business, will be frowned down. Let us hove o-ood laws passed first, and we may' be enabled to 'iidure'a few bunroinhe speeches afterwards. Horrible Aocident. A horrible accident occurred at Rock Island, on Friday Inst. A man employed in the flour mill of (ullniove & Baker, while passing among the machin try was accidently caught by Iii clothing in, the COg3 of a horizontal wheel turning an upright shaft. His body was as quick, as thought, drawn between the cogs, and thrown out on the other side. The cogs caupjht, his bowels and literally tore them from his body. His entrails with shreds of his clothing were afterwards wrapped in strips about the wheel and shaft. The engineer discovered by the jar to the machinery in all parts of the mill that some accident had occurred, and imme diately stopped the engine. The man was found lying on the floor in a pool of blood He was conveyed to a neighboring house, and at one o'clock, he was sensible and could talk, but appeared in mortal ngon-v. He is doubtless dead before this. . In the debate in the State Senate on tieiren s resoituion, wnicu stiirmati.eil Hie Republicans as black, occasioning great ex citement tuercbj-, quite an interesting pnssago at arms took place between liov. Steele, of Parke, and Senator Wallace, of Montgomery. Mr. Steele thought the gentleman from. Montgomery, in paying his devotions, was in doubt whether he should turn his eyes 1o Chicago as his Meccu, or the great. Aligator at Washington. This sally brought down the house alao, the President's hammer. Commerce of thk United States. -According to the official tables for tho fiscal year ending June 30th, 1853, the imports for the year amounted to 5282,613,150, and the exports for the same period, $324,644,421 of which there was of domestic produce, $251,351,033 and showing an excess of exports over imports of 42,031,271. The export of specie and bullion was $52,633,147. The valuo of cotton exported for the year was 5131,386,061, against $131,565,850 for the previous year. In 1 857, the total imports was $360,890,141, showing a falling off of imports for 1858of 737G,9fH. A Few Words about Fun. Some interesting facta relative to the fur trade of the Hudson Bay Company, are related in the correspondence of the New Hampshire Statesman. . The furs and peltries of the company comprise the following varieties : Fox, of several colors ; black and brown bear ; sable, otter, lynx, beaver, raccoon, mink, muquasb, wolf for seal,Jmartin, squirrel, and ermine. .' The most important in the list is sable, of which about 125,000 are collected by the company annually. In England the. sable was always held in great estimation ; a wreath of black sable which, was presented to Henry I., in the early part of the eleventh century, by the Bishop of Lincoln, costino less than 100, which, in those days was an immense sum.

The Russian or Sibernian sable is most esteemed, being softer and more silky than theAmerican. Russia produces about 25,000 offnem annually. The price corresponds with the abundance and glossy blackness of the upper coat a high garment not unfrequently costing $250. The civic robes of the Lord Mayor and Corporation of London, whicb, according to the Municipal. law and long usage, must be worn on State occasions, which are very numerous, are trimmed with, sable. Nearly nine-tenths of the American sable skins, amounting: to 125,000 annually. forwarded by the Hudson Bay Company, are sent to France-and Germany, where it is greatly admired for ladies' wear. Of martin skins the Company gathered in one year 14,000 and the French free traders in Canada, exported -30,325 of them in the same year . The most valuable a mong tue varieties ot the fox are the black or silver a single skin often commanding at wholesale $200, and even $500. Ahout 1,000 of them are collected annually by the Company, and nearly all to go to Russia and China lor linings and trimmings to dresses. The lur of the sea otter 13 used tor a simi lar purpose, and for caps, collars and robes. About 1 5,000 or 20,000 are collected annually, and will go . to China, where a single skin fetches $75, except a few which go to Rus Tufk ;nd Qece . Lynx ana lynx cat are now out ot tasuion in Europe, and are dyed and prepared for exportation to this country. olf skins go to Russia for sleigh robes., Beaver has become a " mere drug since the era of cotton hats. Beaver skins are used in the army for military ' caps and pistol , holsters. The brown beaver which was in great demand in Europe fifty years ago, a single skin otten commanding fifty guineas, now seldom brings five. The pole-cat skin is much ad mired lor its beautj', but is hardly ever used, in consequence of its bad odor. Squirrel is used m immense quantities all over Lurope, and the Hudson Bay Company export vast quanties to the continent. It is extensively and successfully dyed in imitation ot Kussian sable. Its lighlness make it highly prized, -the belly of the dark blue variety being said to weigh no more than a pound and a half, when made into a full sized cloak The Lowell Journal says : . "The Lrmme has been for more than a thousand years associated with the loftiest dignity ot Hie British throne aurt bench. In the language of heraldry this lur is styl ed minever. The coronation role3 of all the roval family are Ermine, studded nil over with small black tnfts of wool of the Wack Astrachan Iamb, inserted in every square inch .of the. garment. With these black snots inserted the ermine is styled 'powder ed minever.' Royalty can only wear the minever powdered all over. Tho peers and peeresses wear ermine powdered ' in rows, the number of which indicate the rank of the wearer. On all state occasions the royal judges array themselves in robes of scarlet and pure ermine, the peers in scarlet robes decked wjth gold lace, and the appro priate rows of ermine or ' bars of minever ;' the royal family m rones of 'minever pow dered all over.' '' The Sibernian ermine is said to excel the American variety, in its intense and spotless whiteness. . The Hudson Bay Company trap about 20,000 annually. A Terrible Scene. We have already noticed the disastrous consequences of a fire which broke out in the shafting of an English coal pit.in the county of Durham. There were eighty-six men aud boys in the vari ous workings of the pit, and after great ex ertion the fire was extinguished, but notuntil ten bf the number were suffocated by the smoke. The bringing up of the living was watched with intense feeling, by thousands of spectators ; but when the bodies of the dead began to be brought up, the scene,, it is said, was distressing in the extreme. . A local paper says : , - , " Wben the last of the liriug had been brought to daylight, a fearful signal was ob served to be given by Mackay, the staithesman. It was well understood, and the hopes which had, up to that time been kept alive in the relatives of those still in the pit. that those dear to them might be saved, were de stroyed. A liain and sheets were given to the staithesman. With these he descended into the dark abyss on his fearful errand. 1 he excitement and anxiety were now pain fully intensified. After a longer interval than usual, the signal was given ; one dead body bad been lastened to the staithesman, breast to breast; the rope was raised a yard or two ; another corpse wa3 slung to the rope ; and now the dreadful load is being drawn up. The women cluster to the lit mouth, and the bodies arrive.: The fir.'t is that of a fine boy, about 13 years Ot age. I Uerc is a beautilul expression upon his countenance, and nothing to indicate tuat bis lite naa been taken by a violent death. The body is unstrung, and a stalwart miner carries it, with the tender ness and gentleness of a mother nursing her child, to the anxious crowd. The child is recognized by its parents and sisters, and cries- of agony rend the air. The other brought up is enveloped in a shroud, it is 1- taken trom the ropes, and the announcement ' . i . : . ; . T.-.1 1 : . . 3 .. o i that it is poor Kellett is made. Renewed wftiliuga startle the spectators as he i3 borne to hia home. This fearful scene is five times repeated. ' Each time the rope ascends, it brings with it two corpses, one of a boy, another ot a man. 1 hey are placed on stretchers, and taken to the crowd, to be i recognized aud claimed, aud the repetition of the same trightful scene produced the deepest feelings of awe and horror. Dicnlty at Corydon Horace Bell Disgracing Himself. A disgraceful affair occurred at Corydon, on Saturday last, in which Horace Bell

played the ." hero." The facts of the case are a3 follows : Bell has been attempting to pay attentions to a sister of Dr. M. Jones, j of Corydon, which course on his part was very distasteful to her family, and a difficulty arose between Dr. Jones and Capt. Bell in consequence. On Saturday last Dr. Jones came to this city, and Horace Bell, knowing that fact, went to Dr. Jones' house, with a drawn bowie knife, and tiemanded to see the young lady in question. This was refused, when he commenced cursing Dr. Jones, and swinging about his bowie knife, although no one except ladies were in the house. He made a dash at the elder Mrs. Jones, when Mrs. Dr. Beekwith caught him, and narrowly escaped being stabbed, the blow cutting through her dress. He then left the house. Bell had been drinking, but was sober enough to know what he was about- V " "" "' - On Saturday evening a young Mr. Jone3 encountered Bell, who commenced abusing him,, and caught him by the throat. Jones dreyv a 'revolver' and would have shot him, had not Mr. Sam Keen interfered. These occurrences excited great indignation against Bell, and he left Corydon to escape the vengence of Dr. Jones and Dr. Beekwith, who wonld have killed him on sight, -had they been able to find him. If he makes his appearance in Corydon again, bloody work mav be expected. This affair is deeply regretted on account of the position lately occupied by . Bell... He did a noble act and wa3 applauded, lie was the medium through which our citizens sought to vindicate their State sovereignty, and gained notoriety." This notoriety seems to have turned hi3 head. He took to drink ing, and ha3 commited an offense which will damn him in this community through all time an offense for which there can be no paliation offered. We have applauded his noble act in releasing his aged father trom jail. We have denounced in unmeasured terms his kidnappers. All this we would do again but we abhor and condemn hi3 dis graceful conduct on .Saturday last, and hope that merited punishment may be meted out to him. JSew Albany Tribune 2JJ. Some of the Evansville'boys tell rather a good joke on a brother of Jacob Born, the mail agent that was arrested a few days ago for purloining letters from the mails. During the recent Congressional canvass in this district, every, stone was turned to beat the " Old Liners ;" and among others, the following incident ocenrred with some of Judge Hovey's friends, as t hey were elec tioneering with a son ot "Fader land. After using all the arguments they could, Louis shook his head, slowly but knowingly, with a sly twinkle of his eye, and said, " when my broddor Jacob came to dis country, he grind scissors for a living, but he turned Democrat and den he got post office on the railroad.1' Thi3 proved a knockdown argument against aiiti-LecomptonLsm.
