EVAN3VILLE, IND. THURSDAY MOBKINO NOVEMBER 25
Canal Trustee. It is very generally conceded, along the entire line of the Canal, that our city is rightfully entitled to the Trusteeship ; and situated as we are, at the most important point on the thoroughfare, and deeply interested in ita welfare, it is highly necessary that a first-rate man should be selected to discharge the duties which will devolve upon the canal trustee. The Gazette, atVincennes, in an article in reference to this subject, speaks of Mr. Howes as follows : " Lewis Howes, Esq., of Evansville, is a candidate for the office of Canal Trustee. While we would say nothing adverse to the claims of any other gentleman spoken of in connection with that office, candor compels us to say that no better man can be found in the State for that position. Living as he does, at the southern terminus of this great thoroughfare, where a large share that is transported over it, seeks an outlet, his position will enable him at all times to watch the interest of the Canal and the shipper. In addition to this, Mr. Howes liar! been for several years engaged in receiving and forwarding a large amount of freight over the canal, and is consequently well versed in business of this character. He is a man of untiring energy, and if elected, will be always found at his post, in cases of emergency. His claims should, as we believe they will, receive the favorable consideration of the members of the Legislature." We observe that quite a beligerent controversy has been going in the Rich mond papers, between 0. Jennings Wise of the Enquirer, and Charles Irving of Dan ville, Virginia. Mr. Irving published a card in the Richmond Whig calling Mr. Wise a liar and pronouncing him no gentle man, holding himself in readiness to meet him on the field of honor. Mr. Wi.-te publishes a reply in the Enquirer, refusing to acknowledge Mr. Irving as a gentleman, or toj make any explanation, calling him a "bankrupt in morals and means," with various other epithets. The card of Mr. Wise also intimates that Irving is a tool in the hands of a conspiracy against his life. For this and other reasons he peremptorily refuses to meet Irving, saying,: " I will not voluntarily incur the risk of staining my hands with his blood. His life i3 worse than worthless, and I cannot allow mine to be of no value by staking it against nothing. I shall rely upon the means only of lawful self-defence." fig?" The friends of Mr. Washington, the owner of Mount Vernon, are defending him from the attacks made upon him in the press. We have not copied these attacks because we do not know the facts, and be cause the grounds are so soon to pass into been a Yankee it would have been said that he drove a hard bargain ; but the amount of money is no object. The ladiei would raise it were the sum ten times as great. Mayor Swan, of Baltimore, has vetoed the bill for the introduction of steam fire engines into that city; The ground on which he does so, however, is not, ha profuses, opposition to steam fire engines, but to the plan proposed in that city. The plan proposed, contemplated a mixed system, partly paid and partly voluntary, to consist of seven ."team fire engine-i and six hand enjiinea. Mai or Swan thinks such a mixed department would uot work welk but intiinntes that, he would approve the abolition of the voluntary sy:- in and of baud engines, arid to the exclusive rii of ?t?sm. e$-.Tuhn Mitchell, editor of the "Southern Strttpsman," publ'rlied at Kuoxville, Tennessee, announce; lln ieuiuv.il of hi p-p-r to Washington City, whrr lim next uuuiher will be Railed. ' SSäF The Sheriff of Munroa county offers a reward of S2T0 for the apprehension of John RodgeiT,, who wars convicted at the jecent term of the Circuit Court of that County, for manslaughter, in killing Edm ond Bingham. It will be recollected that Rogers escaped at the Xew Albany Depot, while on the way to the Penitentiary. A school teacher in Madison, Mo.,was assailed lately by a couple of Amazens, one of whose offspring he had chastised for some violation of the proprieties of school, and severely punished. Tlicy struck him, cut his lip severely, threw his bell at him and achieved a decided victory. Charles Kemball has been tried at Cincinnati for the murder of Wm. Gregory and found guilty of manslaughter. The Gazette says the verdict is a libel upon justice and an insult to the community.
- - Special Correspondence of the Journal. From Indianapolis. Ikdukapolis, Nov. 23. The action of the present Legislature will be watched with special interest by the people.as it will most probably have a very strong influence on the future political history of the State. From the classification given in your paper on Saturday, which is in the main correct, it will be seen that no single party has the absolute control of that body, and, as a consequence, concessions must come from the party that succeeds. All last week was occupied in preparing for the organization. The Capitol never before witnessed such political manceuvering and party stock-jobbing. Anti-Lecompton and Independent votes never commanded such a
heavy premium before. The bidding grew warmer and more exciting as the day of the organization approached,' until on Friday night the auction became intensified in in terest The Leccmpton-Administration head quarters at the Palmer House, and the Op position fragments at the Bates House, were the scenes of the wire-pulling and caucus management. : How the bargain was made and the contract sealed it is unnecessary . here to state, but if the Lecompton forces were defeated, it certainly was not because they were penurious in their .bids, for they offered the Douglas men all the offices, if they would only give in their adhesion to the Administration, which they thought was asking very little. But the Anties preferred affiliation with the Republicans rather than attempt to shoulder the administration burthen, which is getting rather oppressive for its supporters in this locality, who are calling loudly to tEteir disaffected brethren to come to their assistance. .' V ' " The organization of both Houses wa3 effected much more easily than was expected, being upon the first ballot; but the caucus bargain had baen so systematically arranged that there was little left to be done on Saturday morning, except the formality of a vote. Whether the coalition will be successfully carried out remains to be" seen. If it does succeed, it certainly can be well . styled princely caucusing, for seldom have such discordant materials been made to harmo nize. The selection of Gordon for Speaker is, by many Republicans and Indepedents, regarded as unfortunate, for, though a man of some shrewdness and ability, he lacks ex perience and discretion, and is too decided a partizan ; and in such a Legislature as the present a man of parliamentary knowledge, prudence, and conciliatory manners is much needed in the Chair. With a large number, Mr. Blythe was the first choice for the place, and if the interests of the State and the harmony of legislation had been as much regarded as party triumph, he would have been elected But unlike many others, be steadily refused to make any exertion for his own promo tion, and to bis credit, be it said, he never held council with any of the caucuses, though advances-were, it is reported, made to him by the Republicans and anti-Le ter, aa yet in all questions whiclThave arisen in the House, he has maintained the position which be assumed before the people of Posey nand Vaderburgh that of strict independ ence on all party questions. His constitu ents may rely upon the fact that he will al ways receive the respect and attention of the House, though the strong partizan feeling which is so rampant in the capitol may dc Btroy some of the influence which he would otherwise exert. The Lecomptonites affirm, and many of the citizens of Indianapolis coincide with them, that the Douglas men sold out remarkably cheap when they had Dick Ryan rewarded with the place of principal clerk of the House. Bnt Dick dealt some blows against the Administration in the last canvas, and perhaps it was right to re ward him for his manliness. Jennings, the Doorkeeper, was the price which the anomalous American branch of tha Legislature received for its support of the coalition. That party, all told, number' about tivo in the House. The Governor's message was delivered by his Excelle'x-y yesterday afternooi in the presence of both Houses. It contain le?s partizau spirit than was expeeled of Gov. Willard, and meets with little objection, though his sly hints at the supposed misdemeanors of the lat legislature were peghaps out of place. He has wisely bitinJ hi recommendations to the tH rial objects of the called Session, the Slate taxes, the appropriation bill, and the new penitentiary. But I snpxse you have rersived the message as he delivered it from his printed copy. 30,000 English and 1,000 German copies were ordered to be printed, and its consideration has been made the specialordurs of the day,for to-morrow afternoon in coinmitte of the whole. There is a strong disposition on the part of the Legislature to make the called .Session a short ono to do the business for whkh the Governor has called it together, and leave the ordinary business of legislation to the regular Session. If such shall be the determination, none of the offices will at present be filled, for which so many greedy expectants are hanging around the capitol. It is probable that two United States Senators will be elected to demand the illegal seats of Bright and Fitcb. These two worthies have not been seen since the coalitien and organization ; perhaps they"', have thoughtjit wise to modify the wrath of the auti-Lecompton Democrats by their absence. Hons. Henry S. Lane and John G. Davis, are prominently spoken ot as their successors. Though it may be that the Legislature will merely pass the matter by with a remonstrance, fearing that they are too firmly seated in their places to te oustj ed, in the present political complexion of the j United 3tates' Senate. The candidates for Canal Trustee are legion. John H. Harper, ' of South Bend, the defeated candidate for ! State Treasurer, has, it appears, the strong- ! est claims on the Republican party. Dr.
Barton is evidently in bad odor with some of the prominent men of the Lecomptonites, and though he is on the grounds earnest, assiduous, voluble, and- excessively agreeable in pleading his claims, he has a fair chance to be thrown overboard. The prospects for an Evansvilla Trustee are not very flattering, though it may be that, a combination may be effected among the Administration men, the Anti-Lecomptcnitei, and the Independents, which will elect Richard Raleigh. If Mr. Logan s friends had been active, he might possibly have been elected, but to get office at Indianapolis, more time, labor, and money have to be expended than some men are willing to derote to such a thankless pursuit. None of
the other offices go a begging from State agent down to spittoon cleaner, there will be no difficulty in filling the places for want of applicants. . , '..-,' . The Stauding 'Committees will probably be announced to-morrow, and the manner in which they are being adjusted by the. Speaker, promises no. little 'cause of embarrassment and dissatisfaction. In connect ion with them and the present organization of the House, the question i9 involved whether or not the officers and committees of this Session will hold over, during the regular Session. ' . J The United States Circuit Court mid the State Supreme Court in Session, and there are a large number of lawyers from different parts of the State in attendance upon them, which swells the number of public men in the citv. The hotels are all. full. ßÖF The Cincinnati Gazette gives an account of a fugitive from Baltimore, who is under an indictment for bigamy, and who has passed in Cincinnati as " Dr. W. If. Enimctt," but whose real name is Israel A. Leon. Officer Graham of the Baltimore police, arrived in Cincinnati onaSat unlay Wt, with a requisition for the rascal. - Some years ago the scamp married a young lady in New York, a hen he was only seventeen years of age, and after living with her a while, drove her to alife of prostitution by his ill-treatment. He thtn went to Baltimore, where he married another girl, representing himself as owning a residence in New York worth $0,000. the father of his new wife was suspicions that all was not right, and accompanied the newly-wedded couple to New York, where all three put up at a hotel, Leon giving us an excuse for notgoing directly to his residence, that it might not perhaps be in order. He started out t make the necessary Jarrangcments for the reception of his bride, but failed to return. He was subsequently arrested and taken to Baltimore upon a charge of bignmr. After a time he induced an innocent citizen to go upon his bail bond for 2,000, and he was liberated from jail Soon after be "turned up" in this neighborhood, and one day visited the Fifth rtrect hor?e mnrket, with a fine horse and wagon, which he offered for sale at so low a figure an to excite suspicion. But he put on a heap of air?, presented his card, "Dr. Emmett, Dentist &c, and finally called upon a farmer of Kentucky to establish bis character. AI! the latter could say was, that " be had been fixing teeth round his neighborhood,'' but knew nothing more of him. He wns finallysent to Harrison county, Ky., aad about fort penitentiary, for a ternToTsii years.tbf horse-stealing. The Baltimore officer, although he lost the object of bis pursuit, was glad to learn that he was doing the Stats service, and will proceed to Frankfort this morning for the purpose cf getting a certificate of the conviction and imprisoment cf Leon, in order to relieve his surety from the bail .bond. ß"Pork paper is readily taken Ky the bankers in Cincinnati at 10,12 per cent.
