Otir Library. There is no institution that appeals with so many and powerful considerations to publie support, as our Library. I one Com mon School'we train, and discipline, nnii incite the minds of our youth, but their tastes and characters are fotttved by their sabscauent readmers. we awaken in them, at seminaries of learning, an'appetite for read ing, and leave the choice of their reading to be determined by chance and associations. Tempted and misled by the debased litcrature that is spread abroad to catch the prurient and unoccupied minds of youth, it is often found that the boy's intellect has been sharpened at school only to make him a more skillful Adept in ice. The character of the man depends more upon the direction given to bis thoughts, by reading after he attains the age of reflection and judgment, than it does upon the early impulse given by the schools. Our system of free educa tion can by no means be considered com plete without free access to public libraries. If the material prosperity of a city is promoted by the moral and intellectual ad vancement of its citizens, public libraries, being the most valuable agencies to attain these ends, they should be objects of deep interest to all classes. By the liberality and public spirited ef forts of our citizens, a publie Library and Reading Room was established 1855, which has been a credit to the city. For two years our citizens manifested a lively interest in its prosperity ; within the last two years, however, there has been apparently an abatement of interest in the Institution. Like many other public works, where they have been once begun, people seem to exnect theia to take care of themselves. A Library is an institution that requires constant rare ana uuiort irom me dudiic : 1 not increasing and advancing, it will fall rapidly into a decline ; if it has not constantly new volumes and attractions, its halls soon become deserted and its shelves covered with dust. To permit it to linger, is to entail certain ruin. We have made too good a beginning to allow ours to decline. Though little exertiou has beeu made to enlist public patron age since it was first founded, the impulse it received at the start, has kept it iu active and useful operation. It has maintained it self, and accumulated about two thousand volumes of valuable books. It has fully supported itself, and at the end of the pres ent year will be entirely out of debt, with all its property free. It has reached a point at which it must receive a new impulse, or it will begin rapidly to retrograde. There has scarcely a new stockholder been added to the list since the first year of its existente. While the names of many have been erased by death, and withdrawn by removal none have been added. In the meantime hundreds of youn men have attained to manhood many citi zens have acquired means that will allow thera to give a helping hand to a valuable public institution, aud many hundreds of new comcr3 have been added to our popula tion, all of whom ought to contribute to its support and be in the enjoyment of its advantages. The money now received for new stock And subscriptions will not be absorbed in paying old debts, but will be appropriated entirely for adding to the property and attractions of the institution., and in this respect new subscribers will have the advantage of those who have borne the expenses of the first establishment. VTe learn that a new appeal will be made, especially to the young men and to our new citizens, to take stock in this library, with the hope of raising the means of making large additions to its shelves, during the present winter. We do not doubt the appeal will meet a liberal response from the young men, at least. Upon them rests the success and prosperity of the library, and to them it will impart its chief and richest blessings. Crop on the Lower Waliaau. The Viucenucs Gazette gives rather a gloomy picture of the harvest in the lower Wabash Valley. It says "it is the opinion of disinterested persons, that the corn of '58, throughout this part of the State, will be equally as short as it was in 1854 the season of the great drouth. Much of the corn on the low lands, is not worth gathering, while that on the uplands is greatly lighter thau was at first supposed. The long con tinued wet weather hits prevented much, of it from maturing, and it remains in a soft, decayed state. The corn crop always esert3 direct influence upoti the production of pork ; and as there is but little or no corn, this fact, of itself, would have a tendency to give us a light crop of pork. But we have to add to this cause 'or a light crop of pork, the loss of hogs during the suaimcr and full seasons by cholera, which has destroyed probably one-half of the entire number of hogs in the counties bordering on both sides of the Wabash from Vigo to its mouth. Thus it is evident that the pork crop of this season will, in all probability, be lighter than it was in 1954. Potatoes and apples arc also very scarce, Very ma.y farmers have not raised enough of cither to supply their own families. The immediate consequence of this state of things will be a very hard year upon business men as well as formers. There is little or nothing in the country to sell, if we except wheat and hay, consequently there is little or nothing to bring money into the country, with which to enable farmers to pay off their bills at the end of the year. Sg. A SoutherR paper nominates "Wm, C. Hives, of Virginia, for the Presidency, nnd Edward Everett for Vice-President.
Trad at Salt Lake.
The trad of Salt Lake mnst be active, rA; ..... . r t. I W IVJt OliliClllUllb VI V V 1 l t pondent of the St. Louis fi'publiean, who says in a late letter, that so far from the stotks of goods in the valley being sufficient to supply the dcrrmtrrls of thr? people for four years as represented, they will not hold out till Christmas. There are two stores there which liv.ve not thirty yard3 of domestic or prints upon their shelves, and they cannot get them, although they would give fifty pnrwt over St. Louis pnrcs, lm-lnding transportation, to hare them there now. So great is the absolute tearcity in many of the staples that large premiums have been offered by resident merchants to speculators, who had trains on the road destined for that market, but not even the inducements of a premium, and the offer to assume all tue trouble and expense could induce them to sell out. The difficulty there is not how to sell, but how to replenish their fast exhausting stocks, and meet the demands of the people. There are stores in Salt Lake City tlwtt average from a thousand to fifteen hundred dollars c&sh retail sales per day, and those which do not come np to this standard, fall short of itonly for the reason that tby have not the goods. That the prices thcreare high when compared to the prices of the same articles in tke States, is apparently the case, butthen take into consideration the relative positions of the two markets, the cost of transportation, and the cost of living here and they are not extravagant. For instance, they pay for wood from twelve tosixtcen dollars, a cord, and Inter in the season than this it has been known to sell for twenty-five dollars ; butter seventy-five cents per pound ; eggs from seventy-five cents to one dollar per dozen; and every other article of house hold consumption in the same proportion, and no one complains of it. A plain lounge or bedstead made of cotton wood, which would not cost over three dollars in the State8j fa vcnded by he Talcy tan (a word for home-made) manufacturers, at from fourteen to twentv dollars. A Painful Mystery. The Canuelton Reporter says Mr. George Long who was engaged in selling coal to steamers for Capt. Ncwcomb, at Cannelton, disappeared on Monday night last, since which time nothing has been heard of him Mr. Long went iu tow with the steamer Po land, aud sold her several hundred bushels of con!. On Tuesday, another' man em ployed by Capt. Newcomb found Mr. Long's boat floating in the river, several miles above town. Mr. Long's lantern, coat, roceipt .,.,.1 ,,,.,ii; . ,. ..- .... .1. 1 . I """i 0 """1 but nothing mat gave any clue to 1113 disappearance. Whether ho fell ovcrlioard and drowned, or was murdered, remains a mys tery. Having sold a lot of coal he had a sum of money sufficient to tempt some villians to assail and throw him overboard, while float. ing alone in the darkness of the night, back to the landing fruiu which he had been taken several miles up the river. He had been employed for eighteen years in various capacities ubout the mines, but principally in selling coal to steamers. He was generally esteemed for his quiet, unobtrusive mauners, and for his industry and strict integrity. He leaves a wife aud child. Mr. Blytlie and the Speakership. The Terre Haute Journal, a Democratic paper, pays the following tribute to Jhe merits of Mr. Blythe: This gentleman, who is the Representa tive troni Vanderburgh and 1 osey counties, is much talked ol throughout the -täte as a candidate for Speaker of the next House of Representatives. Mr. Blythe, although not a Democrat himselt, represents a strong Democratic district. He is and has always been an old line H hig. e are well ac quainted witu nun ana know bint to be a high toned and houoruble gentlemen, and one of the ablest men in the State. He has considerable Legislative experience, having served several sessions in the Legislature, and was a prominent member of the Con stitutional Convention. His urbanity of manners anil legal knowledge, render him well qualified to discharge the duties that devolve upon the presiding officer of the House, His liberality and conservatism al so recommend him to the favorable conside ration of his fellow members. We know of no one, outride of the Democratic nurty, up on whom we had rather seethe distinguished honor conferred than him. Since our acquaintance with him, we have ever admired him tor his talents and his gentlemanlv de portment and unexcelled social qualities. COXOUKSSIONAL CoItKlTTlON. Mr. S. S. Jones, late President of the Iowa Central Air Line Railroad, in a letter to the Direc tory, resigning his office, states that the cost to the Company, of getting the Iowa Land Grant through Congress, during the session of 1854, was seven hundred thousand dol lars ! Is it any wonder that tho members of Congress become millionaries. The people of Indiana should euquire how some of the large fortunes made by her delega tions in the Seuatc and House have been aeqnired. A kv Lucrative Office. The Indian. a poli s Citizen says according to the new plan of deciding disputes between rival rail road companies, there arc to be three com missioners for the Western States, who are to get $4,000 each per year for their services besides traveling and extra expenses. John Ingle, jr., of Evansville, is tke temporary commissioner for the Indiana district. We have heard Col. T, A. Morris spoken of as the permanent commissioner. A better se lection could not be made. A convention of manufacturers and mechanics met at Cincbinati, yesterday, for the purpose of considering the propriety of organizing a Gnat Western Association of I Mechanics, Manufacturers and Inventors, that a mora perfect examination and trial of inventions may be had than tbey have received at State Fairs. It is the intention of the alw-02 interest to organize a great Annual Fair, in default of appropriate atten- ; i tiou by State Boards of agriculture.

i ..A ::-;. ween nrrecterl at. Craw. mill ni.umiiv. " v . - j fordsville last week. ' Mr. Taylor Jones, a " . , . j t- ! Terre llaute detective, having, during Lis operation, in bringing to justice a similar J, gang in Putnam county, got some intima- . tions of the esistence ot me rawiorasvwe association, proceeded to the latter place on Friday and arrested three brothers named Bastables, who were engaged in the grocery and liquor business, and an accomplice twined Grady, a shoemaker, from Lafayette It is supposed they have been along time engaged in frauds, robberies and counterfeiting. They had arranged a plan to fire simultaneously, several buildings in Crawfordsville, and destroy the principal business portion of the town on Friday night, the day they were arrested. Upon examination of the premises, a large quantity of bogus money, in coin and bills, was discovered. The evidence is said to be conclusive. The culprits were taken to Indianapolis, and will be tried at the present turm of the t. S. Circuit Court. Sokgiio Molasses. Mr. J. II. Burth, of Eureka, Spencer County, has made this year 300 gallons of Sorgho Syrup, from one acre of Chinese Cane, and from the same cane made 120 gallons of superior vinegar, and a large quantity of excellent starch. He has erected a large establishment for the manufacture of molasses, sugar, vinegar and starch, by steam. His boiling power is 120 gallons, but owing to the cold rainy weather he has been unable to make sugar yet, but will be prepared for it in a sliort time. The Editor of the Southern Indianian has been surprised and gratified by witnessing the process of making Sorgho Molasses at Messrs. Thomas and Kell's factory inPrincetion. The production of molasses in this vicinity this year, will reduce sensibly the demand for the Louisiana production. The U. S. Distuict Colkt. The docket of the U. S. District Court now in session at Indianapolis, contains less than half the number of cases that were adjudicated at the May term. Thre are but forty-three cases; of these, one is an admirality cafe and eight actions in debt. The remainder u indictments. The nuruler of indictments will probably be increased some fifteen or twenty by the grand jury. It was supposed when the chief bank note engravers of the country united in an tsweiation for the protection of their business, that much additional security was given against counterfeits. The recent flood of bogus money in New York does not bear out this expectation. Bg, It is stated thatactual statistics show that during the last fifty years the number of members of the Evangelical Church3 in the United State has increased from four hundred thousand to three million and a half, being an increase of eight-fold, while our population has increased fuur-fo'd. gegt- A Mr. Johnson has been fined three dollars in New York for 44 taking hold ol Mrs. Brown and kissing her without any justification."
