EVANSVILLE, IND. .
. WEDNESDAY MOUSING... ...NOVEMBER 10 Our Marke tu.
t"sv ; The old system of markets, for the sale of if vegetables and nieat3, under the supervision of the city, is becoming unpopular everywhere. The regulations are generally inconvenient and vexatious, and in order to ecure a petty revenue io the city treasury, they aro constituted monopolies. In Boston, the old fystem is virtually abolished, and vegetable and meat stores, to which a family can send at any hour for all iU marketing, are as numerous as grocery 6tores. In New York and Philadelphia a movement Is beginning against the nuisances of the public markets. The people demand free trade, and insist upon being left to take care of themselves in the purchase of their meats and frui'-s, as well as their tea, coffee and sugar. The City Council of Cincinnati is consider
ing the propriety of abolishing the public markets, and have, now, an ordinance for that purpose, under discussion. In the larg cities, the municipal corporations haTe a large invested interest in the market houses and tho sacrifice of property is & serious ob jection to the immediate adoption of a new plan ; but in smaller places, like our owu city, the revenue and the cost of the build ings are of little consideration. Our market rules force every man out of his bed under a penalty of the loss of his dinner before daylight, without any regard & the breaches that a crying baby, or the inroads which a quiet rubber of whist or of chess, may have made upon his
slumbers. The whole business of procur- j ing the food for the city is forced into an hour, and that hour the most inconvenient in the twenty four, at least, to some of us. Those whose employments keep them up till midnight and after, hare no fair chance with . the sun-light laborer, who goes to bed with the chickens and is up in the grey of the morning, waiting for the market bell, to snatch from the stalls and from the mouths of his poor night-toil worn neighbor, every delicacy and j;ood thing3 in the market. The editors at Vincenncs recently proposed a change of market hours to 9 o'clock A. M. At Tcrre Haute the people are talking of tho propriety of opening their market at 12 M. This arrangement would enable the farmers, they contend, to leave home in the morning and reach the city before market ! hours and return home at night ; and avoid tho necessity of taveling to the city in the night, or coming iu the previous evening,
.- and exposing themselves to the liiconven-
ince and danger of sickness from sleeping, as they do, in their open wagons, for which the' must be paid in the prices they demand The Terre Haute suggestion would be an improvement, and contribute to the convenience of farmers and citizens. But the best policy would be to abolish
. ; the public market system altogether, let
the business regulate itself. Allow meat3 and vegetables to be sold in shops aud from wagons on the streets, without restraint. There would be economy of time to both seller aud purchaser, and the necessities of both parties would soon inaugurate a plan that would be more for the interest and convenience of both. A farmer, in order to dispose of S5 or $10 worth of vegetables, consumes one day in preparation and get ting to market, and another day is spoiled by broken sleep and the time in attending market and getting home. His wholesales do not often pay hira fair wages for himself
and horses for the time consumed. If there were shops and dealers for the regular sale of marketing, the keepers would select their stocks from a dozen farmers by one trip into 4 the country, or the farmer could slip into town with a load at any hour that was most convenient for him, and leave it with the
dealer. One man could sell what now oc- ' enpies the time of twenty persons to dispose of at the market place. The principles on which the business is now managed are ob solete, and should be discarded.
' BäF" The London Times is making most
violent assaults upon Mr. Reed, our Minister to China, for his conduct in the negotiation
; of the joint treaty with the Chinese. It ac
cuses him of having acted a subsidiary part
' : to the Russian diplomacy, with having accep
cepted terms under the influence of the Rub-
: Plenipotentiary, less favorable to European commerce than could have been obtained,
; and much short of what France and Eng land would have secured had not our Minister yielded to Russian influence. These attacks upon our Minister and government from the imimate knowledge they disclose of the secret history of the negotiation are supposed to have been written in the British Foreign Office, or by an English official connected with the English diplomacy. From facts that have come to light, it is suspected at Washington, that some of these extraordinary disclosure of our secret diplomatic measures have been betrayed by Sir Gare Ousley, who ha3 been sojourning at Washington, occupying a dubious position, and making himself the confident of Mr. Buchanan. What facts may he not have gained at the social board, and in the confidences and careless hours of excursions to New York and Bedford Springs ? Is it not a disgrace to the country that a paid employee of the Foreign office of Great Britain has, during all the discussions with foreign nations, involving the material interests of the United States, been the bosom
friend of our Executive ! Ought not we, of all others, to have been cautious of him ? fceaj- a young uiau m Cincinnati, one night last week, went to a ball, and did not return home until a late hour next morning, Finding the door fastened, he attempted an entrance by the balcony. The father,
who
fancied he was a burglar, seized a revolver and blazed away two or ti.ree times, one of ; the balls taking effect iu tie shculdr of the son. Fortunately the wound waa not of twrioit? character.
Tiie Hog Crop on (h 91l8liitppt. A letter from a highly respectable commission house in St. Louis, dated the 6th inst to. a packing house in this city has the
following comments upon the prospect of the hos crop in Missouri, and the country tribu- I tary r. thn St I,,-.ni market. An it a written for the information, and to guide the operations of a friend of the writer, its statements niay be relied on as revealing his honest convictions. He has good means of forming a correct opinion. lie says : "Since my return home, I have been arranging my figures for an eetimate of the incoming hog crop ; and I think it a moderate estimate to calculate the increase over last year, at 15 per cent. The surplus of old pork on hand islargely over last year'8 stock, at this date j and as yet we have no indications of any increase iu the export demand; though the abundance and case in money matters, may and likely will induce a speculative de mand for export later in the season. Home consumption, too, is likely to be larger this, than last year; but allowing for these, and taking the most favorable view of the prospects ahead, I do not see anything to justify the present priceä for hogs, as quoted at Cincinnati. No contracts have been made hero yet for over 5 nett, except one for 500 hog3 at ?5 25." Z3i A terrible epidemic has prevailed among the Lecouipton Buchanan men here for tho hist week, which has carried them all off; there is scarcely one to be found. The same fatality has attended the receipt of the news from Illinois, wherever it has reached. The State Journal says the same is the case iu that city. The admirers of Judge Douglas have multiplied rapidly since the receipt of the news that he had secured the election of a majority of his friends to the Illinois Legislature. The nest "reading out of the party " will be done by the men whom John L. Robinson, Voorhees, McDonald, Bright, Fitch k Co., have denominated discrjrauizers and rebels. The Sentinel has suddenly discovered that the Douglas Democrats are mighty good fellows and is using several barrels of soap daily in attempts at plastering over some ugly places in the paät it would like now to sec hid.. Säflu a speech, a few days ago, Senator Hammond, of S C, said: He did not think there was anv territory belonging to our Union, suitable for slave ry, unless our Pacific slopes would answer; but there the mongrel races of Mexico would amalgamate with the slaves, and the insti tution would become worthless and insecure. This is the view which every practical and sensible man must take of the subject. There is sow no unorganized territory with in the Union, to which slaves would be. to any extent, introduced, if it should be per mitted by law hereafter, and negro slavery could never exist in connection with the Peonage of Mexico. There seems, there fore, no just grounds for fear of the exten sion ol slavery, which makes the stanlo of our political discution.. &3The Democrats of all shados of opin ions, are rejoicing over what they believe will be the inevitable effects of Seward's Rochester Speech. Thev think it has re moved him as an aspirant to the Presidency, aud damaged the prospects of his party. The " Occasional'' correspondcut.of tho Philadelphia Frets exults over it as follows : I am glad to see Seward's Rochester speech in print. I may say I am delighted. It is a great speech, aud never was a speech better calculated to acconiplisd its end al though that end may not be intended. It effectually, surely, inevitably lavs him out politically. So it is ; elated, like others, with the glorious news from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa, he thought he could say anything, and that it would be swallowed without objection. But how mistaken he is ! I have seen Republicans from the strongest Republican 'districts of Pennsylvania, and they are loudest in their denunciations of his iniprncti vlity aud its extravagance. Vaulting- ambition hath here really o'eileaped itself. A Docdt. Some of the politicifins at Indiannpolis are puzzled to know whether Dunham, appoiuted by Governor WiHard as Secretary of State, is to hold office under the appointment only for the fraction of Mr. ilcCure's unexpired term, or for the nest year. The Constitution provides that the Secretary of Stale "shall hold his oflice till his successor is elected and qualified." Mr. ilcC'lurc is Mr. .McClure's elected successor. Ho has resigned his present commission; hut after thesisth of January lie can come in and qualify under his recent election. The question is, does the Governor's appointment give Dunham the ollice beyond McClure's present unexpired term ; if t-o, does it not give it to him for the next regular term of two vears ? The Wrisington correspondent of tho New York Tribune says that although the law confer tin the Postmaster General authority to make the Post Office appoint ments, -where the remuneration is below $1,000, the President has personally directed them in Illinois, "without the least respect to the wishes of the Department, or any form or consultation. The rule has been uniformly, when a Douglas head was seen, to hit oflV The writer continues: "Every other Cabinet Minister is treated in the same way. A schoolboy could not be more submissive before a teacher than those gentlemen are." ßä"The bitter quarrel betw een the editor of the Ivicbmond South, formerly the organ of the fire-cnting disunion party ia Virginia, with the lion. Mr. Yancey, of Alabama, has had the effect to drive the former into the support of the Union, and to applaud the National Uniou Speeches of Jefferson Davis, made during his recent Northern visit. The violent doctrines uttered by Kcitt. Yancey and other Southern incendiaries, will turn ultimately all moderate, sensible men. Au Extraordinary Exhibition. The Uopkiusviile (Ky.,) Mercury,' w a the following account of the appearance of ten brothers Brown, at the Agricultural Fair
in that county last week : . A remarkable exhibition took place in our , .., . i... .1.... of the lair nnipuiuieaire uu iui: mat one twrhaiw never before witnessed at any fair in the Union, and which would have been a noticeable feature at any exhibition in the world. Ten brothers, uamed Brown, all fine looking fellows, with a strongly marked family likeness, with long Mowing boards, dressed in' similar apparel, and mounted on ten superb gray chargers, which they rode in splendid style, entered the amphitheatre and dashed around the arena as gracefully und as fearlessly as a cavalcade of Bedouins chasing a living foe over the desert. They twined and interwincd in every varicty of evolutions. Now in lengthened line, now whirling iu intersecting circles, now thundering all abreast in one unbroken line, whose front seemed as impregnable as a Macedonian phalanx, and whose advance was as steady and as imposing as an approaching billow of the ocean. The excitement was intense, unbounded, and universal, and the spectators cheered long and loudly, while shwwers of boquets rained from the hands of beauty on the gallant horsemen. At the call of the Marshal, they reined up in presence of their venerable mother, who was looking with tears of joy and pride on her array of gallant sons, and on behalf of the Association, Major N. E. Gray presented her with a silver goblet, accompanied by some very beautiful, touching, and appropriate remarks. The eldest Brown is aged 40 ; the youngest 20 years. Their names are Andrew Julien, Absalom. Gravenor b., Au gustus W, Robert S., William, John A. E., Thomas F Samuel M., Miltoa U. All but three live in thi3 county, and all but one in this State. They are all farmers and traders, and are steady, thrifty, respectable men. That day was the first time for fifteen years since they had all met, and an nflecting meeting it was, both to them and to all who beheld it. , Wh-.-a Boon or late tli-y rea h that coast, O'er lifu's rout:h o'reau driven. Y.,) Eagle, a democratic pa per, exposes the means used by the Admin istration at Washington, to secure the Lecomnton candidate for Conjrress from that district. With all the bribery and frauds committed, t'.ie Executive candidate came out second best, in a race of three : The Navy Yard was stuffed with employees crowded into it hundreds upen hundreds, so that they could hardly walk through the yard will.o-it knocking their heads together ; every one ot whom was compelled to pledge himself to laylor before he could gain un entrance. Besides the votes manufactured in this way. every employee was taxed more than a tithe of his whole pay to raise a hujre corruption fund to pay up the floating scum ever ready to sell itself on the eve of an election. The employed in the yard were for the most part the noted bullies and ruffians of the city. We ask any candid man if the appearance and physiognomy of the sqnads who hung around the polls in two or three Navy Yard Wards of the city yesterday, shouting for their master, could be matched anywhere except by looking through the grating of a penitentiary '.' Such forms and faces never looked upon this outer world before, except through prison-bars, a medium of vision familiar with most of them. The means employed to manufacture Taylor voters, were not more corrupt than the manner in which they were used was degrading. They were sent to the polls with marled ballots in their hands, headed by their overseers, and driven like dumb beasts of the 3tall to vote this marked ticket, with the eye of their slave-drivers upon them; a spectacle better calculated to " make e'en angels weep," than any sccna transacted in a Southern slave-pen. The result has proved that only the employees thus tyranically coerced voted the ticket, and throughout the whole city it did not receive one honest, unpurchased vote. ' The New York Tribune, discussing the influence of Douglas' election, says : Senator Douglas has achieved a signal triumph. Whiie every oilier free State but California has gone against his party, Mr. Doug!a3 has beaten the Republicans and the Administration we had nttirly said combined but, since that is denied, we will say alike. Possibly, that he has beaten the Hepublicans by the aid of the Administration's weakness and unpopularity and the current suspicion that its head urgently desired his discomfiture, even at the cost of seeing his placo filled by. a. "Black Repubii.an," would be the truer statement. At all events, the result is unquestionable. A majority of the new Legislature of Illinois is fur Douglas, and he will be returned to the Senate for the term of sis years from the 4th of Miwcli next. Illinois now presents the same attitude I toward the North and South respectively that Pennsylvania did in 1850, and Mr. Douglas holds the position then held hv Mr. Buchanan. He must either lie nominated, or the Democratic party practica! !y retires from the contest, surrendering the govern ment to the Republicans. Ot course, not only the Northern but the Southern Slave Democracy also at least, that very large jropt rt'on of it described by Mr. Ca'houn as "held together by the cohesive power of public plunder" must insist on the nomination of Mr. Douglas ; and even those who will affect to oppose it w ill anticipate and accept it as inevitable.
