The Canal. Yre were in error, as we are informed by Mr. Thomas D. Smith, the Superintendent of the lower division of the canal, in saying the break in the canal, which has suspended navigation, was in his division. It is not in bis division. It is in the division above Pe- ' tersburg, abontjtwo miles north of the Wbito river viaduct. A break occurred at the . same place four weeks ago, which arrested the passage of boats for two weeks, and it , had been repaired scarcely two week3, when : it broke again on Friday last, and another suspension of business for two weeks, in the most important season of navigation, will be . suffered before it can be repaired. This alternate breaking ind repairing, constitutes the whole history of the canal South of Terre Haute. ' For all practical purposes of commercial intercourse with the North and. - East, the Southern terminus of the canal is at Terre Haute, and it will remain there so long as we are without an efficient and energetic Commissioner, who will insist that the Southern section shall be attended to. Dr. Barton has done all he could, but it rc- , quires a man of vigor and streugth to remove a ponderous obstacle. . ' '' " There is a section of the canal near Bosnier, about half way to Petersburg, " where " . it passss through a deep cut, with a steep bank on one side. Every rain washes the loose earth into the canal, and for ; the distance of a mile there is not more than 19 or 20 inches of water, for the greater portion of the year. To get over this shallow place boats are compelled to restrict t'icmsclvcs to half or one-third of a boat, and to charge double or three-fold freight on what they do carry. This condition of affairs has existed for two years, and no nc has complained of it but the boatmen. We are informed by those who have had the Superintendence of the canal, and are acquainted with the spot, that tho whole difficulty could , be removed, and protection from , future in jury csuld be secured by the expenditure of five thousand dollars. By building a crib of , timber three feet high on one Bide, and ar rest tho falling earth from goiug into the canal, and removing that which has already washed in, as much water could be had at all times at that point, a3 in other parts of the canal, and boats be enabled to pass it with full loads, carried at half the freight they now charged As obvious" aä the necessity of this work is, no attention . hs.3 been given to it by the Commissioners, although the increased tolls it would bring to the canal coffers would repay the costs of improvement in six months; ' : ' ; ". The canal, though it may never fulfill all the brilliant hopes that were originally conceived of it, would, if properly managed, contribute a steady, safe, and a large current of trade to this city. But neglected and mismanaged as it has been, it is a nuisance. As a medium of transportation, it serves but to entrap, disappoint, vex, and Jntail loss upon all who attempt to use it. The public, vexed and disgusted with its wretched management, have ceased to expect any thing from it, or to take any interest in it. railroad interests are inimical to it, and are waiting to see it silent'y sink into utter decay and ruin. Thus, at a period when canals are about to be appreciated ; when the popular enthusiasm in favor of railroads is abating, and when the advantages of water communication for heavy freights are about to be demonstrated by the lessons of a sad experience, we are totally neglecting one of the most magnificent lines of canal in the world, and abandoning it to be ruined by : selfish peculation and incompetency. If the people of Southern Indiana wish' to preserve the vestiges of this great national work which belongs to their section, they must n ow move in the matter, and insist upon having a trustee who has industry and force of character to attend to their interests. Evansville has a deeper stake iu it than any other place, and one of her citizens would have stronger inducements than any other, to discharge faithfully the duties of Commis sioner. AVe cau think of no one more better fitted by habit, capacity and experieuce, to restore the canal and make it what it should be,than AVillard Carpenter, if he would accept the office. His private affairs are now in the hands of others, and he is compara tively at leisure from an inability to use his own means for his own benefit. He might, J under these circumstances, be willing to work for the public for a year or two. Un- ' der his management we don't believe that many interruptions to navigation would occur on this end of the route. Without authority we suggest his name as a candidate for Canal Commissioner. A better can't be found in the State. In justice to Mr. Thomas D. Smith, wt should say that no breaks have occurred in this section under his care, between here find Petersburg, that has detained boats more than ten hours at a time, since he took charge of the section in May last. He has established a corps of watchmen along the line at six mil3 apart, and each erne, is requ'uel to tranverse this section morning and evening armed with apick and shovel, to arrest any break, or repair any slight damage. Under this excellent arrangement breaks are prevented, or slopped before doing much damage." The principal difficulty experienced on the lower division, except the shoal at Hosmer, since Mr. Smith had charge of it, is the want of water, which is kept back on the Second Division, in spite of all remon strances against it retentios An efficient"! commissioner will xrrect th's evil, jg..s- Rev. Daniel Rice, who hag been supplying the pulpit of the Eighth Presbyterian church in Cincinnati, has received a call to the pastorship of the Second Pre3byterian church in Lafyette, in this StaU. Salary. $1,500. '
Etlf While tue steamship Austria was , burning and CapU Renard of the French : ship was along side, rescuing the passengers, three other ships passed with their hulls in ' sight", without altering their course or indicating any concern for those involved in '
the terrible disaster. Capt. Renard, in giving an account of it, said, " I comfort my- J self with the belief that they could not be ! French ships." Every American who read ! the harrowing tale, was ready to exclaim, " it is impossible they could be American vessels." But to the shame of the'eountry, one of them at least, proves to have been an American ship, the Pepperel from New York, bound '- to Bordeaux, " France. The captain trumpets his own infamy by reporting, cn his arrival his having seen the disaster; He should be gibetted, if not on a gallows, at least in public opinion. Capt. Renard says, " while I was lying too, effecting the salvage of the passengers, thre& vessels passed in sight. I distinguished their hulls, and consequently the captains of those ships must have clearly seen the duty I was fulfilling, and which was theirs likewise. But those gentlemen sailed away from the calamity, and did not reflect that their fellow-men stood in need of their assistance. EQ The committee upon miscellaneous articles at the District Fair, held at Vincennes, bare made a lengthy and highly interesting report, from which we copy the following recommendations of Evansville articles: Castings, by Relker, Kinsman & Co., and manufactured at Evansville, Ind., evidence a degree of perfection rarely witnessed. We think it deserving the highest praise, and if the specimens exhibited are fair specimens of the general work of the manufactory, they are certainly entitled to the patronage of Southern Indiana. . Fancy Printing, by. Journal office, Evansville, contains many beautiful specimens of ths art, and is highly creditable to the office exhibiting it. . Chinese Sugar Cane Mill, exhibited by Kellogg & Smith and Kratz & Heilmen. Both articles exhibited skill in the invention and manufacture. We think the one exhibited by Kratz & Ileilman superior for the purpose for which they are designed, but both are deserving of praise.' Marble, spceiiuei s by 3d". : A. Lawrence, were, both in design and workmanship, we think, roost perfect in the finish. liair &pnng. Mattrass, exhibited by J. V. Maddux, and manufactured at Evansville, Indiana, is a very superior article. . CiSy The. Km'.ucky Statesman, an able Democratic paper, says Jehu Jones' appointment to Austria, is the seventh- or eight diplomatic mission given tar Pennsylvania democrats to reward them for their overthrow. " Another such route as they suffered on the 'second Tuesday of October, would require the vacation of all the missions ia Europe and South America to furnish diplomatic hospitals for the wounded in battle. The Austrian mission, us the reward of defeat, is rather a temptation to a candidate fur Congress to let his election go by default."' , i ' We nro accustomed to think the North superior to the South in public spirit and enterprise, comparing popu'ation and natural advantages, can rival Georgia in the extent and success of herpublic works. Georgia has over twelve hundred miles of railroad built and paid for, and yielding to thestock-holders-morc thau an average of 7 per cent, yearly dividend. ' " " . Minister to Berlin. The State Sentinel contradict?, in positive terms, the report that Judge Hughes, the defeated Lecompton candidate for Congress, was 1 be appointed to the place held by Governor Wright, on the recall of the latter. The Sentinel says : Judge Hughes, 03 we are informed from the best anthoritv, would not accept the po sition occupied by Governor Wright, if ten dered him, much less would he be instrumental in supplanting the incumbent. A Moa Turned Back. Some- days ago, at Greeusburgh, Ky., W. S. Thompson was convicted of the murder of II. Simpson, and sentenced to be hung, but received a respite. On Saturday last, some of the citizens of the surrounding counties determine 1 to visit Greensburg, take Thompson from the jail, and hang him. To the number of about CO, they mustered in the ouskirts of the town, and were about to enter, when one or two of the citizens approached them, and after addressing them for an hour or so, pursuaded them to give up their purpose, and go home again; this they , did, leaving the law to take itscourse. - B, The ' contractor's for carrying the mails overland to San Francisce are entitled to the right of pre-emption to three hundred and twenty acres of any land not disposed of or observed, at each point necessary for a station. The stations are not to be nearer than teu miles from each. station, - The distance would give them' about 250 stations or 80,000 acres of land. Mospby. Since Morphy has been in Europe, up to the time of closing the Harwitz game, he has played 117 games, 16 of which he has lo3t, 88 won, and 13 were drawn. That is a pretty clean record, for a young American, in the Ohl World. S-SS"" The officers whose duty it was to count the votes in York, Pennsylvania, decided that lead pencil marks iu " scratching ''tickets were not lawful, so that the names of candidates stricken eut with pencil strokes were counted as though no "scratching" had occurred.' . EST Judge Test, of Indiana, in giving his opinion in a divorce case recently be fore him, said: ' "The advocates of FreeLove could not ask the enactaient of a stat ute more favorable to their views than our present divorce laws. F-vansvtlleCoal and theBodlam Mines , Their Great-Value not yet all nderitood. j To the Editor of th Evansville Jour- '
ka.l There are only a few, as yet, who seem to known that after using the Evansville , coal for years iu their houses, their furniture, i curtails, wall-paper. &c are as free from ! soot and black stains, from coal smoke, as if I they had been burning wood; whilst if they had used the same amount of Pittsburg or almost any other bituminous coal, it would have left its mark unpleasantly and unmistakably on every thing. . In this respect the Bodiam coal has the advantage of not only Pittsburg and other up river coal, but almost all other mines yet opened in ludlana. . Have you ever contrasted the clean city of Philadelphia, inside and out, where millions of bushels of anthracite coal are burnt annually, with the dingy cities of Cincinnati and Louisville and the very sooty city of Pittsburg ; in all these, if put together, there is not half the coal burnt, but that coal is bituminuous, and chiefly known as the "Pittsburg coal." This Evansville coal leaves in a room where used the same light colored dirt or ash that is left by the anthracite, but that dust .or ash leaves no stain or soot belaud it, and after years of the use of this coal your furniture and walls show no credence of injury from so&t or coal smoke. . Not so with the Pittsburg coal or most other bitumnuous coals ' of the country, and of our own State. Because of the great advantage of the Evansville eoal in this same respest of cleanliness, there are families who have tested the difference! who will now tell you that it 13 cheaper iu the end to burn Evansville coal in your grates at the moderaie price they havr? to pay for it, than to use the Pittsburg coal as a free gift. It is true that the Evansville coal leaves more ashes than the other, but ashes are not soot and only have to be carried out, and if they fall on any object they are as harmless a3 wood ashes, and it is by reason of this greater quantity of ashes that there is no difficulty experienced in keeping a coal fire of Evansville coal from one end of the season to the other without its ever going out, by merely putting on small coal at night and covering it up with ashes. It is very common to hear those who have used this coal the second or third year remark that it is better now than it at first, or than it was last year. This remark is merely the result of their understanding it better. The value of this as a steam coal, is thoroughly established by constant use for 2 or 3 years in numerous mills and other manufacturing establishments, and several gentlemen thoroughly acquainted with rolling mills, and engaged in them, have pronounced it a good coal for that use, and Evansville, by, reason of the abundance of this coal, is the best point iu the West for a rolling mill, and it is uow generally conceded that this coal, every where under one's. feet, and mined right at our door, added to our other advantages for food materials aud markets, gives Evansville an adrantage overall the ci.tie3 of the Southwest as a 'Teat manu facturing emporium, which, ere many years, it is destined to be. In our approaching, nay, present growing prosperity, let us profit, liy all proper means, by our own home product of coal, not forgetting to award a due meed of gratitude and praise to ".William Kersteman, whose sagacity discovered it, and whose indomitable perseverenec, in the face of every discouragement, has brought it from the darkness of the mine to the light of the fireside. Home. iA Fatal Case of Som.xambülism.: The St. Louis Republican relate3 au appaling result of somnambulism that occurred ' in" a family of emigrants who , had taken lodgings on the Ferry wharf boat . Friday evening a farmer named John Bray, from Indiana, who was removing to-some point on the Missouri river, with his wife, father-in-law, and four clildren, came in on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. Being in straightened circumstances, the family ob tained permission to stoi for the night in a small room on the ferry -dock at the foot of Carr street. Between twelve and one o'clock in the night, Bray arose, in Iiis sleep, and taking his youngest child, aged three years, in his arms, actually walked from the room and into the water! The piteous wailing of the child, and the loud calls of the father for help, soon drew a number of persons to the scene from adjacent places on the levee. The frantic fcrief of the family partook of the incoherence and ' wildhess of the mauiac, and is described to be of the most heartrending description. Before ingenuity could resolve on any means of rescuing the drowning objects, both suuk, to be seen no more alive. . We have rarely , been called on to record a more appalling casualty, " A'Dakgerol'8 Rival to Uncle Sam. A London correspondent to the New York Herald says : ' ' - John Bull is now ruminating over and will shortly digest a grand plan for securing all the trade of China to himself, via Lake Superior. I have seen the prospectus of a company forming here, with a capital of $10,000,000, to lay down a railroad from the Lakes to Vancouver. The same prospectus will, ere this is in iyi-er have been brought before the public; aud wkh the prospect of an easy money market, it will doubtless obtain the necessary fund3 to construct it, particularly if the giant of fifteen milea is made by the British Parliament, . which the projectors (powerfully backed up by numerous members of the Parliament) will ask for next session; v". There is considerable feeling here in favor of this project, of which the title is, "The Atlantic and Pacific Junction Railway and Land Company.'";..., , , . r; " Richmond L. Jones son of the immortal Jehu, has been appointed privato Secretary to Commander Ridgely, of the steamer Atlanta, one of the fleet ordered upon the expedition to Paraguay. ' Is there nothing else that a grateful administration can do for the defeated member from Berks? Ilotsa is Louisville. The Louisville Journal of the 3d, says the price offered by packers is still $4 50 gross, and in a few instances we learri that 4 T6 bas been paid in adjoining- counties, but this price ia above the views of borers.
