Douglas Triumph. The despatches that passed over ttiollue yesterday, from Illinois to the Washington Stat, were positive in the" assertion that a Urge, majority of anti-Lecomptou Demo

is certain, and will announce the most signal triumph of the personal influence and popularity of a statesman, left to his own
resources,' against almost hopeless odds of power and influence, that has ever been rtv corded in the annals of the country. - Hie
bitterest fees must concede to him eminent ability ; for no man without personal merit and superior intellectual powers, could, in
such a conflict, gain the support of the peo
ple of a whole State. . He has had only
bis own popularity and the strength of his principles to sustain him against an unscru
pulous use of the power' and patronage of
the Executive to crush him, co-operating with a strong and most imbittered party of
political foes.
. Be has met the combined strength of the Federal Government and his political ene
mies at home, and beat them both. " It is
the most flattering triumph that any living statesman can point to. lie has achieved
what Benton was prostrated in attempting
to accomplish, in the meridian of his popu
larity in Missouri. Douglas comes out of a hard fought and exhausting political contest, a victor strengthened and invogorated by the exertion. He may thank Mr. Buchanan for bringing him to a test of his power and strength, that has exalted him Immeasurably with the country, and proved the justness of his claim to the title of a Little Giant," His enemies, in their. efforts to overwhelm him, have raised up a man who is sure to hurl them from power. )

this District, will use his influence to have
the Land Offices at Vincennes again opened,
and perhaps the Court to adjust Land Titles
called into session." The Gazette adds: " there is not enough land remaining unsold
in the Vincennes district to pay the salary
of one officer to attend to it one year ; or, at
least, any that would be entered. So much
for that. As it regards this court, which
was in session during last year, it may be styled a farce, for no other purpose than to quarter a few very good Democratic citizens
upon the public treasury. Any one who
will take the trouble to read the law that
created it, will see that we are right in our
assertion. By that act it is expressly provid
ed that patents, issued under this adjusting
court, shonld not be good against third parties. Against whom then, are they good ?

Far from it. The only advantage A has

ment in this matter will be, we presume.
fully comprehended by the people. He is urged, no doubt, by hungry expectants whose impatience to clutch the reward so soon after the service is rendered, may defeat the bargain.
One of the 'agricultural papers gives the
followinglntercsting account of the first trial under, very disadvantageous - circumstances, at Centra'.ia, with Fawkes' steam
plow. The inventor is a mechanic, residing
at Lancaster, in that State, and his machiue
appears to have been made by himself, at
Christiana, or under his own immediate supervision ; one. which he had constructed at Philadelphia not answering his purpose.
A' premium of $5,000 had been offered by
the State Agricultural Society of Illinois,
for a plow, worked by steam, which would perform its work satisfactorily. This ap
pears to have been the inducement which set the inventor at work. On the fair
grounds he avowed himself to be a "selftaught mechanic, with no pretentions to science." .He had spent all Iho money ho
bad in perfecting his machine, and if he had not yet got it to wtrk properly, he would have, if his life was pared. " If I havn't got it yet, I will have it, if God spares niy life. Cheers. I have spent all that I have iu it, aud drawn largely on the generosity of my friend, Mr. Dickinson. As tor the $5,000, we don't care much about that, but you may as well give it to us first as last, for we are going to stav until we get it."
The experiment drew a vast coucourse of
farmers to witness it. The ground was hard, "hard as a brick." They started; the plows would not go in ; men mounted the
beams; tbey started Again. ; the furrows rolled off the mould-boards delightfully. By altering their position slightly, they
went all right. The draught was very little.
In ground of the usual plowing condition it could have drawn twice as many plows. The six furrows were turned straight and
deep enough, and well laid over. The spec
tators shouted their approval, and Mr. Dick-
nson, a friend of Mr. iawkes, mounted the
plow to give an explanation.
"awkcs came to me witn bis invention
in his handkerchief; I took him to my room and examined it and ioid him to go ahead
and I would help him through even if it
broke me. Here it is I We mean to make
it what you want ill I challenge you to bring anything that will plow better in the
same condition of soil.
One gentleman present said he had four
hundred acres of prairie near Chicago to
plow, and if Fawkes would plow it to the satisfaction of good judges, he would pay
all the machine cost and live hundred dollars more. After the experiment, Mr.
Fawkes, to gratify curiosity, engineered his machine out to the plows, turned, backed up and stationed the engine in front of them with precision. He then turned round, and set itf Ibra new furrow, turned the back
furrow handsomely, as if done by horses,
made Ute entire turn at tue opposite end in
three quarters of a minute, and plowed the distance of thirty rods iu two minutes, carrying six twelve iuch plows. The Illinois Central Railroad Ca ni puny opened their lo
comotive shop to enable Mr. Faw kes to alter
aud perfect his machine, preparatory to afull aud complete trial in competition with two other mat'hineSi one from Dayton and one

Ocr Divorce Laws. One of the most prominent lawyers at the Indianapolis bar proposes, through the Journal, the following amendments to our laws concerning divorce: : ' ; 1. Require two years actual, bona fide, continuous residence in the county, before filing the petition, and require that fact to be proved to the satisfaction of the Court on the hearing. 2. Require a personal service of the sum
mons by copy, unless an affidavit , shall be
made and filed in the Clerk s otl.ee by the
petitioner that he has no knowledge of the
residence of the defendant ; then let notice by publication be given. 3. Require personal service of all notices
to take depositions, unless a similar affidavit shall be made, then let notices be given as is
aow provided.
With these amendments he thinks the
law would be stripped of all its objections.

The familv of a respectable citizen of
Brooklyn, N. Y., ou Saturday morning last, discovered that a daughter only sixteen
years of ace was misainir. She did not
make bor ppearoneo at the hrt-al: dot la.Ua, aud this led to an examination o'her room,
which was found to be in a disordered con
dition and without any human inhabitant
On the table there was found a note, addressed to the m.itcrual parent, by the daughter, which substantially stated that
she had elopod with a young mechanic, and
would return only on condition that her hus
band would be well received aud treated as
a son.. .
When the fact was disclosed the father became very indignaut.'and from what folks
say, must have used very forcible if not po
lite language. He procured a carriage and drove to tie residence of his supposed new son-in-law, who was found at home, and
who received him with great kinduess,
The old gentleman, not responding iu as
kind a spirit as that with which he was re
ccived, immediately poured the viuls of his
wrath upon the head of the unfortunate
young man, who appeared greatly surprised,
and,, at .last, finding an opportunity to ex
plain, denied most emphatically that he had
eloped with anybody's daughter, let alone
the daughter of the old gentleman.-
The father returned to the house, now deserted by the family, who had all gone in search of the missing daughter. lp to noon
no tidings had been received of her, and the
family, are almost distracted, though there
can be no doubt but that she has run away
and got married.

Capt Bell, have made the following report of the negotiations which led to the release of Bell, and an amicable settlement of the unpleasant affair:
. Ksw AlBASY, Nov 1,' 1858. ! Messrs. Editors: In compliance with your request and that of many others, and
also to lulnil a promise maue 10 iue uiurus of Brandenl urg, Kjn we herewith proceed to give a detail of the kidnapping of Capt. Horace Bell, and the circumstances attending bis relief. On Saturday, the 23rd ultimo, while most of our citizens were out at the Fair grounds, five men from Louisville, Ky., took Mr. Bell from one of our principal streets, and by main force carried him to the river. ' Ou the way, however, they presented their pistol3 at our citizens and ordered them to stand back, proclaiming that Bell had committed a foul murder. They forced him on the ferry-boat; the men aboard say that under threats thev w.ere forced to pro-
cecd with him across the river.
Such a proceeding at once aroused our
citizens, and at the same time it was stated
that the citizens of Brandenburg had onereo a reward of SI, 500 for the delivery of Mr.
Bell at that place, and that on delivery he
would be bung. Under such a state of things our citizens, were greatly excited. Many
propositions were made as to .the best course
to pursue. ?.ot being able to determine where Mr. Bell was, nothing wa3 done un
til they had evidence that Mr. Bell was in the Brandenburg jail. On Monday evening ourselre, with others, started for Brandenbursr with the view of obtaining his release
on the best terms we could, honorable to the dignity of our State. At Tobacco Landing, some forty citizens of Harrison county came aboard the boat, and the crowd divided, some going by land to Brandenburg, and the balance by way of the river. When the party w ho went by land arrived at Brandenburg, they found that Mr. Bell had been sent farther into the interior. They then proceeded to the boat aud reported the state of affairs. It was then agreed that a committee
should be sent to the town to make such ar
rangement for the speedy release of Mr. Bell as would be honorable to Indiana and in conformity with the laws of Kentucky. Accordingly the boat was dropped down oppo
site Brandenburg, aud ourselves, with other?,
went ashore as a committee. e were met by Judge Alexander, William Fairlcigh, Clerk of the county, Col. Moremnu, Dr.
Brown, and Col. Buckncr (formerly of
Louisville) with some other gentlemen whose
names - we have forgotten. c stated to them that we had come on a mission of peace, and briefly stated to them the cause
and object. Ihey informed us that Mr. Hell
was some distance from town, in the custo
dy of the law, but in no danger of personal
violence, and assured us that none should be
done him. We then stated to them that it
was all-important that something should be
done, and that speedily, to allay the existing
excitement. It it was not co;ic, civil war
would rajre along the borders of the two
States, and the g wd feeling which had so
lonx existed would be broken up. J. K.
Cannon said to them that he was proud to
sny that m Kentucky he hrst learned to love
his country anl its institutions, lo her he was indebted for that love of liberty, justice,
and conciliation which he hoped would
characterize his after life. He felt that he
was at home as much as if he had beta in Indiana.
These gentlemen seemed to appreciate the
good feelings expressed towards their citizens and State, and replied that tl.ev felt
under obligations to all immediately con
cerned, and to the country in tartitiln.
mcincir uesi riiui is 10 restore ami ptriieiume
the good feeling and friendship that had al
ways existed, and to this end they would
use their best exertions to bring Mr. Bell to
a speedy, fair, and impartial trial, and re
quested U3 to remain with them until the
examination.
We then repaired to theboat, and informed
those lett on the boat of our success.
They were delighted with the prospect of
an honorable and speedy settlement of the
annir.
Bv agreement the boat then rounded out,
aud passed by the town giving three loiig
and loud cheers for the citizens of Brandenburg and Kentucky.
e remained until the examination, ana
were kindly invited to enjoy their hospital
ity, and we availed ourselves of their kind
invitations, and we take much pleasure iu saying that we were treated with marked
respect and kindness by the citizens of
Brandenburg and vicinity, and while on
this subject, we take pleasure in saying to
the citizens of Brandenburg, that wlen any of them pass our wv, thev will find our
"latch strings on the outside." On Wednesday, at 12 o'clock, Mr, Bell was brought out for examination, but a court conld not be had (one of the Justices having disqualified himself hy expressing his opinion in advance), another Justice was sent for, but could not be had until . Thursday. When the examination took place, Mr. Bell plead guilty for the purpose of this examination, and his bail was set at $750 several of tl.e citizens joining in the bond, Mr-Bell was set at liberty, and after paying his aged and infirm mother a short visit, he returned with us to this city, from whence he was unlawfu.lv taken. However, before
leaving Brandenburg, we would say, that many of her citizens accompanied us to the river, and as the steamer moved off, they gave three cheers for Capt. Bell. - . Whatever may have been the cause of these Bell difficulties, we are informed by the citizens Of Brandenburg, that they feel no disposition to prosecute . them further, but are desirous to jive iu peace atd let the past be forgotten. This sentiment, we believe, will meet with a hearty response from this side of the river. - " May peace pre .'ail, and every 30cial virtue cement ui. . . John R. Cankon. Ü3CAR Grkgo.

JTBEAn THIS ALL WHO ARE AE--fiS- - FLU TED. . - I DR. C, HAVES' FAMILY MEDICINES. j Wedo not desire to interfere with the professional I ethicsof our medical schools, nor do we Kssess any skill in pharmaceutics, but Dr. Graves has ojieued to our iiisction a mass of letters from his ugents and most respe-table druggists in all parts of the country, which commend his family, medicines in the highest terms. They meet wfth a very extended sale, which of itself is an excellent recommendation.. We always leel reluctant to make any eudorsement of medicines, but there are so many localities where no regular practitioners ore within reach.
j nnd so many diseases which require prompt rentei dies, that a supply of the prescriptions prcparen. by : Dr. Graves, comiuHded s thev are for efficiency.
would prove almost invaluable. In all case of sickness, our first advice is to call the aid of a p!ivsiciau, but, if .that, is impracticable, it secuis Join that Dr. Graves offers remedial ugents in ague, cholera morbus, fte, whioh may lie safely used, s he gives assurance that rio deleterious compounds are. used iu their prejiaration.
