EVANSVILLE, ind. TOKSDAT MORNING.. NOVEMBER 2 H'Cjy The elections of to-day will have an important influence on the future politics of the country; on their result will depend in s measure the coarse of events in 1860 ; on their issue rests the future strength of Buchanan's Administration its power for good or evil. The Tote will tie a erdict of the peopla upon the course of the
Administration and all allied with it. Its discovered- diffused all through it, leaving strength for future evil will be determined nQ doubt that she was poisoned. The histoby the judgment rendered at the ballot boxes ry of the case is a remarkable one. In Scp-
to-day. The attention of the country is turned with intense anxiety to the contest in Illinois, ' 8be elects a State Treasurer and aSuperintendent of "Psblic Instruction, one half I of the 'members öfter State Senate, the members of the Lower House, and nine nfembers of Cdhgress. It is now representd by fbür Republicans and five adti-Le- j compton Democrats. It is not expected that the political complexion of her delegation will be changed ia the next Congress. To-day the SUtes of New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Michigan also, ote for State officers and members of Con gress. Wisconsin votes on Thursday, and little Delaware on the 9th inst. These States telect sixtv-six members of Congress. At present they are represented by forty-five Republicans and twenty-one Democrats. Louisiana elected State officers yesterday, and Mary land votes for State officers to-mor row. The two latter States do not elect members of Congress till next year, 80?" The State Journal supports the pro positions taken by Gov. Wright in his cor respondence with the Prussian Government, that an adopted American citizen has a daim on our Government to protect him from the duties and penalties incurred be fore leaving to his native government, when he shall return under its jurisdiction after having, according to our laws, changed his allegiance. The argument of Governor Wright and the Journal is plausible and very consonant with our pretensions to national ity. But its error is exposed by a home application of the principle. It is a penal offence in Prussia to leave the country with out special leave, before a citizen has per formed the military service required by law. Could one of our citizens, guilty of a penal effence by our Municipal Law, flee to foreign jurisdiction, become a citizen under it by forswearing his allegiance to his na tive land, and then return to the United States and interpose the shield of his new Sovereign as a bar to a prosecution for the crime committed when a citizen of this country ? Would any lawyer put in such a plea, or a Court listen to it? Would our Government tolerate the doctrine when up plied to itself? S" Major McClure's new office of pay. master has a salary of $3,500 per annum attached to it, besides perquisites, and a life tenure. He has been an uncompromising Le comptonite, and an unscrupulous defender of the President. The mystery of this milk in his nut ia explained by recent events in his history. The appointment of Mr. Dunham is approved by papers of both parties. The State Journal says it has no doubt he will make a good officer. He certainly ought to be for he is a man of far more ability than is needed for such a routine office as that, and he has had quite an extensive experience in public business. Either in State or Nation al affairs he was for near a score years an active and constant participant up to 1854, In that memorable year he " went under" with many other promising men of his party, and has stayed under so completely, not ven raising his nose above the water to get a fresh breath of political life, that anything but a Democrat would have died most thor oughly long ago. He will hold the office till the next annual election. The Victorious Paity In Pennsyl vania In answer to the question frequently asked, what party was successful in the recent tri umph in Pennsylvania, the : Philadelphia Prets replies, that in the rocent contest in tnatbtate tacre were no candidates run as Republicans, and that there is no Republican party in that State; that there was no Ameri can candidate run as such. The efforts of a few misguided men to run what they called " Native American " candidates was re pudiated by Americans, and turned out a miserable abortion. There was a complete uniou of the elements of opposition to Buchananism in every part of the State. It was essentially the pople's party that achieved the triumph. tS5" The courts of Iowa have made tho injunctions against the Rock Island Railroad bridge perpetuate, which will prevent any repairs being made to the structure. One of the piers is already underminded and is fast inclining to a fall; in a few months more, it is predicted, that the obstruction will remove itself. One of our citizens has made the railroad company, we hear, a proposition to tunnel the river and give the cars a passage under the river that shall be beyond the reach of ice and floods, and the complaints of river men. The next Congress. Letters from Washington say that the Administration now expect an opposition majority of at least ten against them. The opposition are also can vassing for a Speaker, and the Pennsylvania Delegation have proposed the name of Hon G. A. Grow as their candidate. Bdbak. The latest advices from the 'West Itidia Islands, where the Sugar Crop haa been nearly all gathered, represent the yield to.be more abundant than it Las been im twenty yeara. In Dcmarar, especially, the crop was jrrcatly in excess of any former pred'.ict. This is good ncs to consumers,
Rcmirkable DeTtlopmeaii of Mur-
der. The iBTestigatitB' of the charge of mur- - tiering his wife who died more than a year ago was made against James Stephens, heretofore a respected citizen of Sew: Tork and a leader jn the Methodist church, has resulted in the development of facts which are likely to lead to his conviction. On exhuming the wife's remains, which had been interred for a year, they were found to be nndecayed. The entire body has since been subjected to the severest tests of chemical analysis, and the presence of arsenic been tember last a young tnaa uauied Robert Hell was arrested in New York city for an attempt to shoot Stephens, the alleged murderer, with a pistol. He fired at him, but tne ball lodged in Stephens coat collar. The attorney who was employed to defend Bull, on conversing with him learned that the mo tive for the attempt wa3 a strong conviction in his mind that Stephens had murdered his wife, Sophia Stephens, (the prisoner's aunt) by administering poison. Mr. Schroffer had an interview with the Misses Bell, sistere of the prisoner, who were living at Stephens' house-when their aunt died, aud the result was that upon their affidavits, corroborating the suspicions of Robert Bell, Justice Welsh issued his warrant for the apprehension of Stephenson the charge of murder. Coroner Conncry ' was notified, and on tho 23d of septembei. -U6l one yer After her death, the body of Mrs. Stephens was disinterred at Greenwood Cemetery, and removed to Bellevno- Hospital. A post mortem examin ation took place, after which the body was subjected to an analysis that exhibited the presence of arsenic more than enough to cause death. . The investigation before the magistrate proved that before his wife's death Stepheus had proffered improper at tentions to Miss Sophia Bell j that he had threatened to leave his wife, and called her "old and peevish," (she was some fifteen years his senior) ; that during " her last ill ness he gave her some suspicious looking powders, aud large doses of laudanum j'that he would suffer no one but himself to give her medicines, aud that he had twice made purchases of arsenic about this time, under pretence of poisoning rats. The Bells are said to be of the " first fam ilies " of Ireland, several of the brothers of Mrs. Stephens being Protestant clergymen' The Misses Bell had lived with Stephens in .2bth street two or three years previous to the death of their aunt. They entertained suspicions at the time of her death, but dared not make them known, in consequence of the threats of Stephens to have them ex pelled from the church and ruin their char acters if they said anything against him. A letter from Fanny, vaguely hinting a sus picion, at length reached their friends in Ire land, and their brother Robert, an impetuous young man, at once came over and attempted to take the la in his own hands. Stephens was held to bail for his appearance. SSsy We mentioned, a few days ago, a lutus natura a duplicate human bäng which had been exhibited at tlic late agri cultural fair at Nashville. Mr. Estis, of Gibson connty, who recently saw the extraordinary object, gives the editor of the Prince ton InJianian a description of it. It is a negro girl, or more properly, two girls, eight years of age, having two heads and necks, one body,' and four arms and four legs, all perfectly symmetrical in their proportions, and equally useful ia the performance of their respective duties. : She has two hearts, two stomachs, and only one set of bowels. She seems to have two separate and . independent minds ; can converse with two per sons at one time on tho same or different subjects, or one head may be engaged while the other remains passive. In partaking of food she always eat with both mouths; even though it be the smallest particle of food, it is always divided, between the two Neither bead sways an influence over the other, but a complete unison of thought per vades their every thought and action. She sings sweetly, and can walk, dance, or run with as much grace and rapidity as any girl ot ner ag. Mature must have been in a strange mood when she produced this crea ture; The I'aris orrespondent ol the New York Journal of Commerce, under date of Oc tober lltb, says: Hon. Robert Dale Owen has just made short sojourn in this capital. His career at Naples, as Minister Resident of the United States, is creditable in all respects to him and his country. He is justly described to me in a letter form taat city, by a compe tent observer,, as a gentleman of superior abilities and extensive knowledge, and with aL courteous and amiable. In a note to me, of the 6th, he says, "I have just heard of the dangerous illness of my aged father, and I theretore take the first train for London, near which he lives." The venerable parent, Robert Oweu, of Lanark, is in his eightyeight year, and his demise, if it has happen- 1 ed, will be widely regretted. , ; Poor Pessstltasia. Here are some of the Pennsylvanian Democrats now in national office i , , - ... James Buchanan, President.' . James Black, Attorney General. ' G. M. Dallas, Minister to England. , J J. R. Chandler, Minister to Naples.' " . -. Mr. Buckalew, Minister to Equador. Mr. Reed, Minister td China. Mr. Clay, Minister to Lima. ..' ; . Mr. Jones, Minister t Austria. - It is a shame that Pennsylvania, should repudiate a party Ih&t deals so generously with her " favorite sons." J S$ It ia reported that Judge Parker, the Democratic candidate for Governor of NewYork, has destroyed his prospects of success, by imprudently undertaking as is said by his own party to justify, In some measure, the- course and doctrines of Mr, Buchanan. For this mistake he is rebuked in the New York IleraU, which plainly gives him to understand that the ks h suvs'about the i lurije-.'t the better.
The Jkflgcncx of- Schools oh PorrLA-
TIft hnr ifintir of the New Harmony . . i Prlu.tical Science has been extnsiw ,,to and attracted , rf. I . r t 1 public attention. One result of it is related in the following paragraph from the New Ilarmoay Advertiser : , - - ? - : j - r We are pleased to learn that a gentleman from New Albany, on his way to New Orleans, who had seen" the notice in the Journal, came over from Evansvillo last Wednesday, iu order to obtain circulars and to inform himself also regarding the " facilities offered for female education. On hearing that arrangements were being made to organize, about the commencement of the new year, exactly what he desired, he decided to locate his family permanently here. " . . This is what we desire to see. We are too much at the extreme verge of the "Pocket" for New Harmony to become a great commercial place, but that circumstance renders it the more suitable for educational purposes ; and if we can draw around us those capable -of organizing and carrying out the system of education, as well as those who appreciate these benefits and desire to avail themselves of such advantages, we cannot fail to bring wealth and prosperity to the place, besides securing that which ia'of more consequence an increase of intelligence and a high moral tone. Good Schools bring population, capital, intelligence and good morals to a plac. What steps have been taken to establish the Female Seminary hese under the charge of the Methodist Conference? The Navajo Indians. S. M. Yost, writing from New Mexico, giving an account of Navajo Indians, saying the United Statc3 troop s were about to begi h a cam paign to punish them for their recent outrages, by destroying flocks and herds and burning their villages, Bays the Navajo Indians have 250,000 sheep at least, and about 60,000 horses. These are their wealth." Their care and trouble now mostly is to secure them. Destroy them aud they will become desperate. Unencumbered with their herds and they will enter the field with the full determination to fight it out. A second edition of the Florida war may be expected. Peace miy be plead for to save the stock, but these lost aud war to the knife will bo the motto. Mark the prediction. Speaking of the flock of 5,000 which tbe troops had enptured, and wantonly slaught ered because thev had no means of feeding them, and preventing their rc-capturo by the Indians. Mr. Yost sav3 : . The sheep are the finest looking I have ever seen, borne of them will weigh 200 pounds au 1 over. We have here now at the post, selected from this immense herd, four large rams, which sport, each of them, four long horns, either prong being at least eight inches long. 1 hey are a euriosity in their way. Place Ilnuters and the Administra tion Organa. A correspondent of the St. Louis Repub lican, which has been the leading organ of the Administration in Missouri, gives tho following account of what is being done at Washington : The ever watchful members of the Presi dent's party are now in full force here, anx iously wailing for something to turn up up on which they may seize to till their private colters. . It is understood that tbe "organs are to be returned, or,, in other words, that the democratic papers of New iork, PLila delphia, Baltimore and Washington are to change hands, and this fact produces a com motion anions; those who believe in the "spoils." The priuting patronage of the Executive Government is now ijameii.se, and great will be hc scramble for it before the organs are in perfect tune. In New l ork an entirely new instrument is to be secured, tho A'firi having too many false notes to suit the ear of the Administration. Here the only change will be in theproprietorshp and the performers, and to arrange these is giv ing the venerable President a great deal of trouble and solicitude. It is yet possible that Mr. Appletion will leave the State De partment aud take charge of the Govern ment organ. ...... :.-,. What is the world ? A dream within a dream as we grew older, each step has an inward awakening, llie youth awakes, as he thinks, from childhood ; the full grown man despises the pursuits of youth as vis ionary ; the old man looks on manhood as a feverish dream. Is death the "last sleep No it is the last final awakening. Sir Waller Scott JBgg"" The "Washington Union of Saturday contains a leader bitterly opposing the doctrine of Protection, and ridiculing the ironmongers of Pennsylvania, in particular, for asking such a revision of the tariff as will promote their interests. The article undoubtedly expresses the views of the Administration. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. lE W SV4JJH 10 II Hits. PHI.nE W W new Sugar just received and tor sale by nova FRESTON BROS.
