i EVANSVILLE, IND. . MONDAY MOBSINQ..V I NOVEMBER 1 The President and the Pacific Rail. ......- v.:. Read ;, : A correspondent of the St. Louis Republican, from Washington, reports from a most
reliable source, that Mr. Buchanan is about T , I i taaiSg strong grounds, on , the subject of a Pacific railroad, and will ursre. in his annual Pacific railroad, and will ursre. in his annual
message, the immediate passage of a bill, including a plan of construction, which he ' will furnish Congress. The fact that the
'' English are about building a Pacific road to their immense gold fields, and to their splendid harbors in the Gulf of Georgia, seein to have had a happy effect in arousing to the importance of action our federal authorities ! for the President has been fully assured, that should the English road be the first one constructed, it will secure for all time to come the trade of the Pacific. To the Gulf of Georgia will all the whalers repair for supplies, and there too will go the rich trade of the Indies and China, just opened by- treaty stipulations, with this, heretofore, locked-up 'empire. A number of the Western Repre- ', sentatives including General Joe Lane, of ' "Oregon and Governor Stephens, of Washington Territory, have called on Mr. Buchanan in connection with the Pacific Railroad enterprise, and have urged that he should occupy no equivocal position, but ' throw the weight of the whole influence of his administration in favor ofthe passage of & railroad bill this winter. As I before stated, I have it from a reliable source, that ' Mr. Buchanan will do all in his power to secure prompt action on this important question.
8 The Russian Railway from St. Petersburg to Moscow was constructed under a contract for .a certain sum per mile and the rolling stock was furnished upon a like basis. The road lias been reported and paid for as over 400 miles in length. By recent astronomical observations, the distance between the two cities was found to . be siity miles less than the . reported length ', of the railroad, though the road runs al- ' most in a direct line. On examination it was found that the government had paid for about one-seventh more than the ' road -actually measured. The poles erected along the line to denote the distances have been eytematically fixed in the w-rong places, so as to mislead both the government and the public. . - The Emperor was in the most violent ' state of excitement on learning the abovo and gave' immediate orders for the strictest investigation into the facts of tho case, with the view to inflict the mo3t summary pun ishment on the parties implicated in this ne- ' farious transaction ; but as so many persons ' of the highest rank i and importance are compromised in the affair, it is cot likely that the-investigation will be continued, ' but on the contrary the matter will be - hushed up to prevent the public scandal ' and the real delinquents being exposed and made to suffer the penalty they so richly de serve, .for the share they have taken in this atrocious fraud. This road was built under the superin tendency, and by contract, principally, with Americans, and this affair is denounced as a Yankee trick. , Great numbers of the leaders ot the old whig party in Massachusetts, are acting in opposition to the present organization of the Republican party in that State. The "editor of the Charleston (S. C.) Courier, ' giving an account of a recent visit to Boston, says, "I strongly hope and verily believe that Winthrop, Everett, the Curtises, Ililliard, and numerous others, will incline . in the same direction, and at least be with, if ' not of the democracy, in the approaching State elections. Indeed, on my telling Mr. Everett of the happy coincidence I had found between my host and myself, in that we were both old line whigs turned democrats, . and expressing the hope that our example would be numerously followed, he pleasantly remarked, ' Well, I have taken the first step myself in that direction, a3 I addressed the Democratic Club of Young Men on the 4th of July. ' Conflict of Jurisdiction. , The State Court of Ohio, and the United . States District Court for the same State, have been entertaining conflicting suits for the control and disposition of the assets of the Ohio Life and Trust Company. Both have granted injunctions and made orders for the appointment of Receivers to take possession of the property which has brought the two Courts in direct conflict. Judge Gholson, of the State Court, has de- , liTcred an elaborate opinion sustaining hi3 -Jurisdiction, and Judge Leavitt of the United States District Court, who i3 sustained by the opinion of Chief Justice McLean, de fends the rights of the Federal Courts in the proceedings. ,' The State officers have antic ipated the United States Marshal and got 'the property in their possession; and with this advantage of "nine points in the Law," will probably hold it. "' The President and the Nicaragua Qces,,TioN. It is said that Mr.' Buchanan is daily 'engaged at the State Department with Gen. .Cass, on, the Mexican and Central American affairs, which will figure largely in his annual message to Congress. He is much exercised because of the presence and movc'ments of the British fleet in Nicaragua, and regards it as ä breach of faith on the part of 'jtheJkitisit.Govornmeut. He will denounce fully and in ' unmistakable terms all foreign -intervention. J6 Cyrus L. Dunham has been appoint ed by Governor Willard Secretary of State, lit place of Daniel McClure, appointed pay master in the army. The New Albany Led ger says 'MrC Dunham has filed his bond and will enter immediately npon the discharge j ,of h'l duty.' . i
The Speakership. The State Journal, copying our nomination of jfr7Blythe for the Speakership of the Ilouse, adds: : Mr. Blythe and Mr. Edwards are not unlikely to concentrate a large portion of the preferences of the Legislature for ihe office
in question, hither would mafee asgoodan officer as ever presided in the Ilouse, and : both are widely known, not only for ability but for the rarer quality of undoubted intgritvv . Mr. Edwards, at leasV has aad no lit - 4 - tle experience a3 a presiding officer, and tho'. he hnü not teen in the Leril;itur it has boon he haS not been in the Legislature, it has been of a kimi. that cannot, but nave given him valuable instruction in such duties as those suggested for him. He .is, moreover, . pos sessed ot that most important ot all qualities for a presiding officer equanimity. It is hard "to move him to wrath," or' to harsh language. Under his direction business would not be suffered to languish, or debates to grow into quarrels. Either he or Mr. BJyfhe would be an excellent choice for our next. Speaker. Mf. Davis, we are informed, does not desire the place. Morphy, the great American chess player, has triumphed over his opponent, Harrwitz, and has been declared the winner, and ail the bets hare been paid. They were to have played uutil one or the other had won seven games; but when thej-stood Morphy five and Harrwitz two, the latter gave it up, laying tUs blame of his defeat npon his ill-health; but the fact is, Morphy is by fur the bast player. When the determination of the match was announced at the Cafe de la Regence, the rendezvous of the chess players here, the Americans assembled there were quite uproarious in their exultation, while the Germans and the Prussians who had bet upon Ilarrwitz, immediately suffered a terrible elongation of countenance. ., BQ? A convention of all tho officers of the leading telepraph lines in the country, representing a capital of five or six millions and about 40,000 miles of telearraph wire. was held in Xew York, last wek, to' regu late their prices and the mode of doing business. Among the prominent subjects discussed, was that of a line to California. It was resolves that speedy measures should be taken for building a line across the con tinent. The principal objects of the meeting appears to have been to combine to fix uniform rate, of charges andjuiake theirown regulations for doing business. The business is now in a few hands and already too much of a monopoly. The inmates of a boarding house in St. Louis, consisting of eighteen persons, were ail taken violently ill after eating dinner on Thursday last. A physician was called who declared the household to have been poisoned, and on investigation it was found that arsenic had been mixed with' the salt us&J for cooking, in the kitchen. AYho was the perpetrator of the foul deed, ind what were his motives have uot been discovered. ' S-'Sf.In a recent trial of importance before the Supreme Court in Boston, in regard to the lines and parly walls of two adjoining estates, photograph views of the buildings and party walls were introduced as testimony to show the position and condition of the buildings. No description in words or plan by a iiirveyor, could have afforded so satisfactory information as to all tho de tails of the wall, as these photographic pictures gave with most reliable accuracy. It is reported from Washington that Mr. Buchanan adheres to his former test of democracy, and will insist that the condi tions of the English bill shall be strictly adhered to. Toombs and other Southern dictators, threaten a bitter warfare in case of the least hesita.ion upon this point; and it is probable they may bolt anyhow, after the example of Douglas. Mr. Buchanan is de termine! to retain the Southern influence at all hazards. There are warm times ah ead. tflS" Mr. Douglas did not, as we are in formed, make his appearance at Carmi on Friday, and those who went over to hear hiin, returned without being able to lenrn anything of his whereabouts. Some dissatis faction as well as disappointment was created by his non-appearance, which may in jure him in the election on Tuesday in Wa bash and White countie3. Some of his friends charge that the appointment was made without authority, by his enemies, to prejudice him with the people of that sec tion. A Terrible Tragedy. The Lafayette papers relate a terrible tragedy that occurred in the Bartholomew Circuit " Court, at Columbus, in this State, on Wednesday last. In the trial of a suit brought by a firm in Madison, Messrs. Shrewsbury & Price, pork operators, against a man named Newherter, on a contract for poik, a verdict was rendered against Newherter, who, on hearing it read,- drew a pistol, in open Court, and shot himself through the heart, and died instantly. Washisgtos News. Tt is curreutly rumored in Washington that Gov. Floyd will resign the War Department for a foreign mission, and will be succeeded by Attorney General Black. - Judge Holt, the present Commissioner of Patents, it is said, is to succeed Judge Black. Mr. Dallas has written to the President that he will return home in the spring, and Mr. Clay has been recalled howe from Pern. The resignation of Gov. Floyd is contradicted. fcS" The two female pedestrians who undertook to walk a match for $100, at Montgomery Hull, . New York, after being on their feet from Wednesday noon till 3 o'clock on Saturday morning, having w;ilked sixty-three hours . without sleep or rest gave in, and agreed to call it a draw game. Large crowds of men were attracted to see them, during the performance, all of whom paid a quarter entrance fee, and out of these receipts the ladies found, it is presumed, compensation for their fatigue and lo-n of skrp. . .'

The failure of Curtiss & Co., at Peoria, i3 another Gramercy affair. They have about $150,000 of their worthless bills in circulation, . and about 40,000 on deposit, belonging to the farmers, mechanics and merchants of Peoria and vicinity. Like the Garmercy chaps, they promise their depositors that they shall shortly receive their mohey in full, but it is all gammon, and we do not wonder at the disposition manifested to string them up : without fudge or jury". , , JE Several of the New York officials have recently been indicted for their rascalities in embezzling the public funds of the city. ; HEW ADVERTISEMENTS. gfMMCMJM-Llit OF LKIfEKS B.KMAIß Hing iu tho POST OFFICE at Evanjvills, Indiana, en the 1st day of November, lttdS. - Persons calling for thoso letters will please tmj 'advertised " and give date of list.
