Bj the Constitution, -Special sessions of the Legislature are : limited to ibrty, days, and if the session called by the Governor ; extends to its' full constitutional limit, it . will expire on the day .previous to the regular session, 'which "begins on Thursday, the ' 6th ef .January. . It was this considera- ! tion, probably, that induced the Governor ! to select the 20th of. November for the commencemeht ofthe extra session. By" this arrangement the called and regular ' session ' will 'be a continuous one, of one hundred ' days, should that period be required to aocomplish all that the interests of the State demand of the Legislature. The old political parties are very jn early balanced; but there has been such a 'conglomeration of the political element in.", the recent convulsion, that it will take some time for the members
to discover their political ; affinites, and coalesce into new organizations. There are several troublesome political questions to settle and upon these long' and turbulent discussions may be expected. ' All these matters may be settled, and a large amount of business cut out before the holidays, so that the Legislature can devote its ' entire time, during the regular session, to the ordinary business of legislation. 8?" The State Sentinel thinks it evidence of stupidity or ignorance on the part of the Evansville Journal that it should have copied from another paper a suggestion that Gov. .Willard might call together the old instead of the new, Legislature, because the act would be a palpable violation of the Constitution. Judging him by the past, there was nothing very monstrous in the presumption that he might attempt it. The Constitution declares that "Neither the Gov. ernor nor Lieut. Governor shall be eligible to any other office during the term for which he shall have been chosen." Gov. Willard, during the Constitutional term for which he was chosen, was elected in palpable violation of this provision to the office he now holds, and the power of which he is daily exercis ing in disregard of this important prohibi tion of the fundamental law of the State, The1 Constitution further declares that, " no money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in pursuance of appropriation made by law." . Yet the Governor has been Jor eighteen months dispensing the funds of the Treasury without any appropriation act or warrant of law, and has called together a council of men unknown to both law and Constitution, and made appropriation of the public money, in as gross and palpable violation of the Constitution as it would be to call the members of the old Legislature or any other clique, to Indianapolis, and order a division of the public funds. There is nothiug to be done more in outrage of the Constitution than he has already perpetrated. ggf non. Milton Gregg, editor of the New Albany Tribune, announces himself as a candidate for the office of State Printer, to be filled by the new Legislature. There is no one in the editorial corps, who by long service and devotion to the' honor and interests of the State,' and by a manly and honorable course, has stronger claims upon the Independent party -for the office, and is more worthy of it honors and rewards. He is well qualified for the post, and has ample facilities for doing-the work. We think the party sheets at Indianapolis have been sus tained long enough upon pap from the State Treasury. ; ' Tub Legislature. The Editor of the New Albany Tribune, who is familiar with the political sentiments of the members elect of the Legislature, says there are 28 Opposition Senators, and 22 Old Line Democrats.' The House is composed of 53 Opposition members and 47 Old Liners. :But among the latter are fifteen or twenty inde pendent anti-Lecompton Democrats, who are opposed to Bright and his odious political doctrines. '' ': ' Lynch Law is Texas. The murderer of Mr. Grant, of Texas, late of Orange county, C, and son-in-law of the late Professor Mitchell, has been detected, proving to be Washington Garner, the son of a wealthy, but very much dreaded neighbor of Mr. Grant's. Wash, was jailed, but about two hundred enraged citizens assembled, broke open the- jail, took the murderer out and shot him to atoms. ' r Valla.vdinqham's District. The Cin cinnati papers state that quite a number of persons charged with illegal voting at the late election have taken place in Preble and Montgomery counties, and it is thought by gome that false rotes enough will be hunted out to change the character of the result in the Third District. $3 O. B. Matteson, of corruption noto riety, having been defeated by almost unanimous vote, in his aspirations for anoth er nomination to Congress (in the Oneida District, New-York), has left the party, and is running against the Republican candidate, and is canvassing for Democratic support fiST Two men were lately standing on the corner of Grand street, New York, engage in conversation, when one of them name Levi Spies, of Philadelphia, suddenly disappeared. His comrade on looking for him discovered that the earth had'o;tven way under his feet and that be had been precipitatcd'thirty feet into a welL lie was taken out badly injured. War with tbe Narajo. Dates to the 22nd of September have been received from Santa Fe which lead ns to fear there is to be a very serious conflict with the Navajoes Indians, a powerful and
semi-civ i Lsel tribe inhabiting the fastness of the Rocky Mountains to the "West of New Mexico. The tribe has" for sometime been committing depredations upon tbe steck of the . American settlers, and a few months ago a member of the tribe killed a negro. Mr. Yost, the Indiana Agent, demanded that the assassin should be given up or ""his functlo ' as Agent would cease and they .be tnrned over to' the: mercies of the Military tobe dealt with." The mur- J derer was not produced and a Blihtary lorce was seht to" make tlie demand ? y ' On the , 7th' of September, Saxdoval, a chief-"bf some1 notorit t.-, and' hbld in high es x by. the a. t .orities for h:a ri ;nd.-hir , reported that the assassin had been taken after-a severe struggle, in which he was wounded, and would be consequently given up the next. day. At the time appointed, Sandoval appeared, bringing intelligence of the dia h of the captive during t e night, and requested, the commander, to send, a. wagon for the remains, lue corpse was brought in, escorted bv from three to fire hundred warriors, armed nud ready for action. They told the commander that this was the remains of the . murderer, whom they had- pursued into a cave forty- miles distant, in which he had defended uimselt with fu:h desperation till they were com pelled to shoot lum, and for tins act tüey claimed great credit, as exhibitivc of their friendly disposition. Everything passed off verj- well until a 2ott mortem examination was carefully had, by Assistant surgeon Mch.ec, who, from tüe unmistakable evidences resulting therefrom. the body was evidently that of a young man about eighteen years of age, instead of the man ot forty-five, whom it was pretty well known had killed the negro. Thus the deception was made known, and the Mexican, whom it was thought had been innocently killed for the purpose, would not an swer the purpose. : The Indians upon being told of it, would not still give in, and deter mined u o 1 battle. The next day Col. Miles, at the bead of a column of three hundred men, started on an expedition against them. He penetrated the celebrated canon of Chulhv a fearful chasm whose sides tower some fifteen hundred feet precipitately, and returned to the Fort on the ICtb. He had not found any of the Indians in numbers, but felt the effects of some of their hostility. His bnglar, imprudently riding alone in advance of the troops, was riddled with arrows and immediately killed, and a piquet guard mortally wounded in . the night by similar means. Whether auy Indians were killed, or not it was not known. Col. Miles captured about six thousand head of fine sheep, of which five thousand head were llled as they could not be driven away. Whether this lamentable destruction of pro perty will bring them to terms, remains to be seen. ""'" Tbe wanton killing of 5,000 sheep, seems barbarous and discreditable mode of war.1 . -- fare for a mighty, empire,"- in a contest with a few thousand savages armed with bows and arrows. Col. Mlies was organizing two columns for operations in the field, and was to leave in a dav'or two, and it is thought that the next iuii.il will bring intelligence of severe fightincr. ' ' ' Col. Miles asked the Commander of the Department to make a requisition on the Governor for six hundred volunteers. This will not lie dime as yet, although twice that number could be at any time raised. v hen the matter will terminate, especially if any of the other tribes assist, it is hard to say. The Navajps are a numerous pastoral tribe, possessing large herds and flocks, oc cupying some of the deepest and most inaccessible-valleys and defiles of the" Rocky Mountains. From the .fleeces of their flocks, the Navajos women manufacture the most beautiful Mexican blankets, of 1 he softest wool and most brilliant dyes, and of a fab ric so perfect as to be impervious to water. They rivat in beauty and texture the finest production of the Asiatic looms, and are often worth ?50 to $100 each. .It is sad to think that such a tribe is doomed to' exter mination, instead of being advanced in civ ilization and religion by, the progress of our own population.Consternation' at ' "VTashington. The occasional correspondent of Forney's Preis gives the. followiug account of the effect of the recent elections upon the officials at Washington: "" . . . . It is ditlu-ult to depict the consternation and dismay caused in official circles here by tüe result ot your election. The ntter rout that lias taken place was totally unexpected. The king who, when he opened bis blackbird-pie, found its five-aud-twenty occupants singing melodiously, was not more taken aback than Mr. Buchanan when ho discovered that the five-and-twenty Congressmen of his native State, but two favorable to his Kansas . policy had been elected. The President could have borne without a pang the loss of almost as. y other State, but to be thus rebuked and repudiated by the Commonwealth of which he was so long "the. favorite sou," is a terrtble How, aud puts him in a very bad humor. Wedo not desire to interfere with the professional ethics of our medical schnobt, nor do we possess any skill in pharmaceutics, t'Ut Dr. (Jravu has opened to our inspection, a mass of li tters from his agents and mobt respovtable druggists in all iiarts of the country, which commend his family medicines in the highest terms. They meet w it li a very extended sale, w hich of itself is au excellent recommendation. We always feci reluctant to make any endorsement of medicines, but tin-re are so maiiv localities where no regular practitioners are within reach, and so many diseases which require prompt remedies, that a supply of the proscriptions preparea by Dr. tiruves, couini'Hded as they are for e.flicicncy, would prove almost invaluable.
