EVANSVtLLE, IND. FBI DAT MORNING -..OCTOBER 22
Th Eitra Setslun : lias been called, we arc informed, to'" "pro-. Tide by law for raiäing a State Jlevenue up-: ton the general levy of the year; in ordt-r tot
pay the January interest oa the-Stauv Debt and to meet the current expenses of the State.'j j The Legislature will also be called upon,-to pass a law forjthe re-appraisement of """the taxable property of the State," so" as t equalize and make just this public burthen upon its citizens.!' , We, should think 4Uat this latter duty should be performed first. , We have no general legal levy for this year, : and all former ones : would be manifestly most unequal and unjust applied to property in the different sections of the State now. An equal and just distribution of the public burthens is a duty paramount to all other questions of temporary expediency and conrcnience to the State. ,
If the State has been enabled to meet her obligations for a year by borrowing from ' her trust funds as they are not exhausted, she can meet her payments from the 4ama resources, for three months longer, until a fair and equitable revenue law caa bo framed. We hope the members froui the , Southern portiou of the State will not consent to the collection of any taxes under levies, by w hieb property fa the Southern regions is assessed upon valuations that . have been made grossly unequal and unjust, by the influences of internal improvements. Let the Legislature take time to mature au equitable revenue system before it consents to the assessment of a tax. . The plea that the necessities of the State iirike it imperative upon the Legislature to impos-a tax under the old valuation, though it be probably unequal in its operations, is a severe condemnation of the course of the Governor. All the consequences of the de- . linqnenccsof the old Legislature, were plain- ; ly seen and predicted at the time of its'.adjournment, eighteen months ago. Why did he not reassemble it last year to provide for , the present contingencies, ?T-, The ..reasons that now inpel him, in fulfilment pf his duty and his oath, to burthen the State with an . extra session, existed in . additional force a .year ago, and his present 'i action is an acknowledgment of his past delinquencies. The condition of the affairs of the State for the last eighteen months has required an extra session of the Legislature, and it is but a proper exercise of discretion in the Gover- ' nor to call the new Legislature together at the earliest possible period ; but we protest against jtny Executive efforts to induce it to commit an net of outrageous injustice upon the people of a portion of the State, on the pica of temporary necessity. '
8s2f A duel was recently fought in California between Wm. F. Ferguson, formerly of Springfield, .Illinois, a member of the Seuate aud one of the ablest young lawyers ' at the California bar, and Geo. P. Johnson,
a mau of some distinction in the State. Ferguson, after five shots received a severe wound of which he died a few hours afterwards. The duelling law of California is
very severe iu its penalties and was drawn up and was passed the St Louis Republican says by the exertions of Mr. Johnson. It provides that if death ensues within one year after the date of the duel, from any ' wouud inflicted, the survivor upon convic tion, shall be punished by imprisonment in , the State Prison for any term not exceeding seven years nor less than one year. The surviving party is liable for all debts of his victim and for the expense incurred, and the support of his family during his sitkfiess if he was not killed instantly aud the heirs of the deceased are entitled to recover the sum of ten thousand dollars. The seconds were more guilty than the principals in this case, in suffering five or six shots to be exchanged, without making any serious attempt to arrest the duel. Mr. Johnson, it is said, has property and a lucrative position, and it would be strange if he should be called to make good the provisions of hi3 own law.
SST" Senator Hamlin, of Maine, is one of the ablest men in the Senate. Ha is not brilliant, but in soundness of judgment, nobleness and manliness of character, in devotion to truth, in singleness of purpose, in firmne33 of resolve, he has few equals among the statesmen of tho day. lie has ever been a true Democrat, in whichever party he has been classed. The St. Louis Democrat says, " from the time of Jackson till now he has maintained the rigid inflexibility of has faithi careless of party defections and neglectful of party rewards, yet with the courage to lead on in critical conjuncture, or to stand aloof and alone when factions become demoralized with victory. Taught early that Democracy meant freedom and not slavery, 1 he has not swerved from that teaching ; but in all his relations has ever allied himself with the radical clement in politics which represents both control by the people and liberty to the individual. In his domestic life ho is above reproach, and of singular simplicity of habit, going from thp Senate chamber to the harvest ücld, or from the toils of a small farm to the carc3 of a great State, with the case, dignity and cheerfulness that marks the man devoted to duty before pleasure, aad conscious of acting his true part in life. Of late we have seen going the rounds of the partizan press a scries of letters from Washington, telling how grandly and gorgeously some of our wealthy Representatives have entertained the diplomatists and strangers at the capitol, and dealing in what we must believe to be exaggerated accounts of their munificence. To rival the White House in splendor is now the highest ambition of many there, and when we recall the plunder of the public treasury in which they have participated,
tb only wonder U that they succeed so poor- ncr in the great baloon race between hiraly. It b in contrast with, such with the self and Prof. Godard, at Cincinnati. 1 -
Douglas, the Ü wins, the Brights, who ape
thepoor pretensions of aristocratic ways, ; that we( wish, to present a . pict truly Republican Senator as seen in his own borne. The sketch is from a private letter not designed for publication ; but it has such a gehial glow about it, and altogether shows so fine a type of the American civilian, that "the Democrat thinks itself justifiable in o-iviu? iL to the nublic: . i giving 1U U me puuiM, - - t llaviuc- had business ti call me to this city i I thought I would ride down the river to Ilamdi'ii (about five miles), and purchase a cargo of tanning for a customer (a Quaker), and at the sunie time call on my. old friend, Hamlin. AfLcr knocking -at his plain and comfortable residence, a fine looking specimen of a ; girt 7 came to 'flic door: and, said I, ." Is Senator Hamlin at home The answer was,' "He Ys ;. but not in the house at this time." Yankee -fashion, -said I, " Where Is he? " "Down in the field,"; was the reply. " Show me the way," said I. No sooner said than done, and there I found j my distinguished friend at work. Himself and son, a fine locking j'oung man, were gathering pumpkins. You, no doubt have often len.rd of Yankee pumpkin pies, and doubtless eaten them, too. These were growu amidst a field of corn, which we are sorry to say, is rather light this ' year, in Maine especially. He has no other help and with a fine little farm-of only ten acres of tillage land, he told me he yearly raised more than sufficient for all his uses, and for ten j'ears had always had corn left over, to sell from ten tolwwjty bushels; but this year he thought he should not. He bad his family horse (a good one) in a common farm wagon, just drawing the last load of pumpkins. All his harvesting is done, except the corn. He had a lame back that day from the effects of carrying his wheat up stairs to his granary ; it was all cleaned up, and looked finely. He has his ground plowed and subsoiled, together with a large manure heap, m good shape, made from the waste earth and muck and some other additions, with a few casks of lime added, lie has his cranberry bed,; and all the small fixings, such as a good poultry yard, fine hogs, A.c.; whilst lor Uiuuer, everv article upon the table was 'growu upon this snug little farm. And to add to the pleasure, the good lady, Mrs. Hamlin, had just given birth to a beau tiful boy, and the mother was doing well. His eldest son is reading law at home with his lather, "after the work is done, and the daughter looks after the home concerns with ease and grace. ' 1 write you this for your ow gratification, to show you what we poor New .Eng land small farm people can do to make life go smooth, ana not detract from the chance of'dthers in doing the same. ' This,, doubtless, would not compare with some of your Western . farms, but I know you will not think the less of it and its owner for all that. - ; v.-... Success to us in 1860. Things look well this day from Pennsylvania and the , West. Salt Lake Price Ccurfst.-A Corres pondent of the St. Louis Republican, at Salt Lake gives the following quotation of prices for the following necessaries of life among the saints, some of whom must have long purses to support a dozen wives and two and three score of children. The writer says: l iie figures are correct, and are our retail prices ; Hour 4 50 to 5 00 per 1 00 lbs hea tl 50 to 2 00 per bush. OaU 1 50 to 2 00 per bushel. Corn 2 00 per bushel, Whisky 8 00 per gallon. Barley 2 00 per bush. 15ccf cattle 9 to 10c, on foot, per lb. Bacon 50c per lb. Hogs 40c. Mess pork 3U (ili to 40 UO. Mieep Ü 00 to 4 00 per head. Cows and calves 35 00 to 60 00. Sugar 60 to 63 per lb. Coffee 65 per lb. Tea 2 00 to 3 00 per lb. Rye 2 00 per bush. Tobacco 75c to 2 00 per lb. Pota toes 2 00 per bush. Salt 3c per lb. Wool, uncarded, 60 per lb. Pepper 75 por lb. Salaratu3 50 per lb. Vinegar 8 00 per gal. Domestics 30 pvr yard ; callicos 30 and 35. Shors 3 00 to 5 00. B ots 6 00 to 12 00 per pair. Yeu will, by the aliovc, perceive that calico or dry good are in great demand, and there are not enough now in the aket to supply it. The ladies, after a long privation of that great article of drees, have almost ex hau.' ted the stock. In connection with t'iis subject, I will merely state that I have scon but one lady in a hooped skirt since I h.ive been here ; but as the materials are fnst arriving, and as we have broad streets, the expansive crinoline will soon begin to mauiii.'st itself. Tub Cbojs in Hesdeuson Cocsty. Messrs. Woodruff & Funk, of Henderson write as follows, to the editors of the Cincinnati Price. Current respecting the- crops in that vicinity. The coi n crop on the uplands is an average in this part of the'State, but in Southern Kentucky the bottom or flat land3 is our best eoru lands, and they failed almost to tally, iou, tncrciorc, may put tue corn crop down in this section at under the aver age. 1 he wheat was not aii average harvest, being badly damaged by rust, smut and scab. The quality, therefore, is not good ; not one crop in an uunrtrca that will weigh 60 pounds to the bushel. The hog cholera has prevailed to a very great extent, äome farmers have lost as many as 300 head, aud mauy will have to buy their meat. In one neighborhood, of two miles square, where we botight 2,000 head last year, wc will not get 600 head this year. You enn judge as to the rest of the couutry, as the cholera extends mostly ever the State. There is a greater number in the vicinity of Bowling Green. We understand Messrs. Quij;ly & Co., have purchased some 30,000 head at $5 net; $4 gross is now the rate asked ; in some portions less, but $1 13 the highest rate. Wc are yours, truly, w. & F. Steamboat Disasters. The river between St. Louis and Cairo is in a verv bad condition for steamers, though ei x feet of wtiter is reported. The steamer Rodoljih suuk by a snag near Goose Island on the 17th. She was running as a packet between Cairo and t. Loui?, and was worth about $13,000. She will prove a total loss. The steamer Flying Cloud, bound to N. Orleans 'with a large cargo of produce, was badly damaged on thc same day by grounding, and while swinging had her sternpost knocked out, but succeeded in making the shore and prevented sinking. She is worth $150.'000 "and is well insured. The Henpehsox ani Nashville R. It. The Hon. J. P. Probable Murder of a Match Fed-
ai.r.Strag. -fr- , i body of a man was found floating in the i Miami Uanal. ine deceased waso.iterwaro.3 recognized as Henry Brandt, a well known match peddler. An examination of the body led to suspicions ot his Having Deen muracr- ; ed and then" thrown into the canall lie was Harmless man, some nny or sixty years 01 . 1 ..,,. aSe and tuougn a strong armser ana, ire- . queatlv drunk, was never known to quarrcl. It id almost certain that he did not commit suicide, "and ten dollars in small coin found in his prockets, shows that he was not murdered for plunder. What was the cause of his death, or the inducements to his murder, if murdered, is a mystery : . The history of the deceased is of the most luterestincr character. lie was a wretcnea victim of ui3 wife's infidelity.' 'Abouttwen-ty-eight years ago he emigrated from Ger- j many with bis family. He and his wife were both of highly respectable families, j and fce brought with him to this country $48,000 in cash. He purchased an estate not far from Cincinnati, iu the State of Kentucky, paying $12,000 cash for it. . j There he resided, surrounded Dy all that ; the heart could wish, aud apparently happy ; in nis domestic relations. vv tue resiuing there, a libertine won the affections of his wife. lie persuaded her to seize all her husband's ready cash and elope with him. She did so. The news of the elopement came like death to the unfortunate husband and his children. They did not pursue the erring one, but spent days and weeks in silent grief. At last the father proposed to the eldest son to complete the domestic rum, and cover themselves with life-long misery. The son assented.'1 They prepared torches, and in the darkness of the night, hreu the farm house, the barn, and every improvement upon the estate. Houses, grain, fences, and every article of value on the farm were destroyed. The morning sun arose on a desolated estate. Brandt then went to Cincinnati. He plunged into drink, and what little properly he had was soon squandered. He then took to peddling matches and blacking to sustain himself. . I or several years he has lived a vagabond life. ' Whatever he made hy peddling was expended in drink. ,. In the summer he slept in the stone quarries north of the city, and in the winter iu a bakery in the Twelfth Ward. He was never disposed to converse, and when, as was often the case, drinking-housc loungers endeavored to make sport of him, he hastened out of their way. , ; Sometimes to .those who favored liim, he would tell his story, and it never "failed to enlist the strongest pity for the heart-broken old man. . , , . At the time of his death ho was between fifty and sixty years of age. No one -came forward to pay a tribute to his memory. The body was taken charge of by the poor authorities, and without a sympathising tear, will be hurried to potter's ' field. ' Such is the sf,ory of this man, whoie death is yet to be accounted for. ' Communicated. Tlie Horses at our Fair. Mb. Editor : I observe a communication in yesterday's Journal in . regard to the stock exhibited at our Fair, which bestowed due praise on a Stallion and a Colt of tho Selim stock, raised in the Blue Grass neighborhood. There was another horse of the same stock, exhibited by Mit. Talbot, of Poseyville, that I thought was the equal in all the points of beauty . and fine qualities with the horse that took the premium. They were both beautiful animids, and it was difficu't, I presume, to' decide between them. I agree with your correspondent that the public commendation which is gained at our Fairs is a greater inducement, than the premiums, to raisers to exhibit their best stock. Public praise should there fore be awarded to every one who merits it; and Mr. Talbot is entitled to an honorable mention for exhibiting his very fine horse. W. The Pork Market in Fbospect. We have to notice a rather active demand in the speculative, or prospective way, for mess pork ; and within the last few days there has been a good deal done, and Were sellers easily found at the prices named, the business done would have been large. $15 is freely offered for mess pork delivered at any time during the season, after December 1st, at the seller's option, and $16 has been agreed upon for a lot to be delivered on the 1st of next April, and we understand 1,000 barrels to be delivered in New York, about the 1st of March, at $17 50, is another contract. The Kentuckians are the leading buyers, and the Eastern men the leading sellerss we understand. The indications are now very strongly in favor of high opening prices, so that, our country friends had better pay particular attention to their hogs, so as to have thein ready for market early. Cincinnati Price Current. The proprietors of the Overland Mail Route to California have contracted with the Government for two mails a week for 5G00.000. The price for through tickets is ?200, with forty pounds of baggage. Six J passengers came through on the first trip. ' j There are six superintendents on the route ; j each stage is changed every two handred i miles, and the drivers every one hundred I miles. About six hundred miles of the j route is exposed to the attack of Indians, on ; which an armed guard of twenty men is i employed. ! MARRIED, Xn Boouville, October lth, by Judge Moore, Mr. M. W.
