EVANSVILLE, IND. MONDAY MOUSING. ..OCTOBER 4
.Xl . - . Tin Tteket. - - - The ticket ia our columns was placed there without consultation with any one, and no one of the candidates is responsible in any way for the connection ia which his name was placed ; not one of them was aware of tTje use we made of his name till the ticket was published. It embraced the .' names of the best men, in our opinion, ; among those who had offered themselves as candidates all of whom, ' we understand, -are willing to adopt the anti-Lecompton Democratic platform. We gave the ticket no political designation nor especial cornemendation. . We published it to bring the
names of those we deemed the most capable and reliable men prominently before the
, public, Without much regard to their politi-
cal antecedents, asking only if they were light on the paramount question of the day, The only name placed oa the list at the suggestion of a third party, was that of Mr, Moore's candidate for Circuit Judge. As
". we desire that neither local feelings, politi- ' cal prepossessions or. religious prejudices
shall have any influence in the elcct'on of our Judicial Officers, we place the names of both candidates for Judge in the ticket, and most earnestly urge voters to weigh the merits of both most carefully, and vote for the most worthy, without asking by what . agencies he hits been . brought forward, or
. to what section of the party be belongs, or
what his religious faith may. The only misgivings we have felt in regard to Mr. Burke's fitness for the position, were as to . his personal habits in the use liquor. These hare been removed by the assurances of his
. . personal friends, and intimates that these . , are not such as to impair the vigor and clearness of his intellect or to cause the least uneasiness to his friends. They assure us , the reports which have been spread abroad in this part of the District, are slanderous and false.
Some weeks ago the debased parasite of Bill English, the New Albany Ledger, published a spurious version of a speech of John 31. Wilson, English's competitor for Congress, delivered at Washington in 1854, purporting to be written out from notes taken at the time of its delivery, and pre served with care for use. The falsehood of the story, and the iuunou3 forgery of tho speecbs have been most conclusively exposed by the testimony of witnesses who beard it, and by the re-production of the genuine speech, as published at the time of its delivery, in the newspapers of tbe vicinity, showing clearly that tho counterfeit bears so rercmblancc to the trüa Speech ; yet the finquircr here which can always find a lower depth of infamy than any of its co-laborers in Lccomptoa falsehoods after this damuiug exposure, rc-publkbes the false speech, and puts it forth with an affected hypocritical appeal to excite the prejudices of naturalized voters. The first publishers of the forged document, could make some pretences of a belief in its genuineness; Lut those who jepcated it, after the fnu-d was proven, must be void of shame, and all regard of honor and truth. : ÄS? Jcffcrjou Pa vis, tbe other day, made one of those noble and patriotic speeches -trhich'thrül the hearU of the people in all sections of the country, and prove by the response they meet w ith, how easy it would be to heal all the, wounds inflicted by sec tional strife, if political leaders would but become national y their views and aims, and cease to goad tbe people to hatred and enmity by tbe shafts of scctinal jealousy and prejudice. He rendered a graceful tribute to the hospitality and kindness that had been extended to bim in New England, praised the fat cattle, the ingenious imple ments, the good farming, and drew from the varied productions the different develop- ' incntg, and the mutual dependence of different sections of tbe country, the great lesson of union aud brotherhood."1 Such sentiments " as these are more than empty compliments ; they have a meaning and an effect, and they are responded to all over the country by those who understand the value and who love the traditions of the union. EÖ7Gcn. Laue has beeu iu this district openly canvassing for Xiblack's re-election. K Iblack is pledged to the doctrine that no State should be admitted with a population less than 9-1,000. Every vote, therefore, ' which Lane made for Xiblack, is a rote to keep Oregon out of the Union. But Lane cares less for tbe admission of Oregon, than he docs for the allowance cf the S4,000,000 of Oregon war claims, which is being bought up by a company of speculators and harpies and in which Lane and his friends have a deep stake." If by flattery he can secure the influence of Buchanan in aid of this enormous fraud upon the Treasury, he would not care if Oregon did not come into the Union in five years. A million a "year would compensate him and his friends for waiting. The extravngant laudation and ridiculous flattery of Buchanan which conHtitutcs the pith of his speeches had a purpose, and were made with an eyo to the main chance. - JBäTWe ere indebted to Judge Hovcy for a pamphlet printed at Washington for Mr. Bright, .containing the speeches, opinious, and votes of the U. 8. Senate Tw whl,"h th right of the Hon. Jesse D. Bright and Grahaai N. Fitch, to their seaU as TJ. S. Senators from Indiana, was confirmed. There is not iu the pamphlet any portion of the evidence upon which the speaking and voting was predicated. The facts, we suppose, were deemed non-es3ential matters. S" John Nash, who is under sentence of death,"at Keokuk, Iowa, is believed to bo ihe same John Nash who left Vineennes some jears ago, suspected of nanny committed .ievsjra' bewy robberi?".
Burglars. Two of the burglars tried at ,
the recent, term of ; the Circuit Court at 1 Princeton, confessed their crime after con- ! viction, and the Clarion says one of them, ' named Barton, went with the Sheriff to a ! place near Patoka, and about forty rods from the railroad, where in a hollow log they had concealed their plunder on the morning after the robbery. Some kind of animal had drafted every thins: fron its hiding place. The watches, pocket-book, gold pens and gold coin were all there, to gether with a dart lantern and several other instruments ' 'Used by burglars. Their own account of their proceedings is about this : They entered town after midnight, and first entered the house of Mr. K. B. French, but finding him sleeping uneasily they left there and Tisited Mr. Jerauld'a. : One Of them (Barton) went into his sleeping room, but finding Mr. Jerauld about to be aroused by the restlessness of his little girl, he went down stairs, where the two waited half an hour, and then " going back succeeded in getting the watch. They then went again to Mr. French's and catching him sleeping well, took his .vatth. At Mr, J. Devia's they could not effect an entrance. From there they went to Dr. West's, and succeeded in stealing from two rooms those of Mr. Carr and Mr. Jenkins money from the former and a watch, two gold pens, a pocket-book and gold coin from the latter. As they were leaving town they saw a man astir just below the depot, whom they supposed saw them. The seeing this man and supposing they would be pursued immediately the theft was made known, was what made them hide the property at all. It appears thfit whoever they aW did not sec them. r On their way to the Penitentiary, Climer, the associate of Barton, made his escape from the officer while the cars were stopping at Seymour, and though band-cufied and a chain on his leg, made good his flight in the dark. Mithouist Conference at Mt. Versos The Advocait gives the following account of the conference on Thursday and Friday Bishop Janes, of New York, was ia the chairf - Messrs. Ilcsier, Jackson and Hill were elected Secretaries. Tho morning session was taken up principally iu tbe ap pointment of committees, and in passing upon .the claims to continuance m their charges of sundry probationary ministers. . A scriom of resolutions, authorizing and prescribin-r the manner of the election of a Board of Iruslecs of the Asbury Institute, elicited some debate, iu which Messrs. Smith, Sabin, Daily, Kiger, Hill, Noble aud Hester participated. In opposing the resolution requiriug a majority of tbe Conference toclect, Mr. Sabin expressed the opinion, that, owing to previous niismauajrcmcnt of the financial concerns of tbe Institute, tbe latter would soon become bankrupt, and be dciicndeut upon the ministry to supply its current expenses. Mr. Kigcr. replied, asserting tbe groundlessness of Mr.Saliin's fears in regard tJ t'je Institute, defending the policy of the provious Boarils, and tx.resi ng rcne confidence in tbe present cöuditiou and future prospects ol t'ic. Institute. The otucr sncakcri likewise averred their be lie I in the wisdom of its previous maiiarxmcut, aud had uo fears of the future. The debate w.u quite, spirited, and con Siaerabie rcadiucsa, tact unl ability was manifested by the speakers. The Conference is quite a full one, embracing the most talented of the ministerial fraternity of South era Indiana. "A St. Louis corre :pondrnt writes us that the Upper Mississippi is fdlinf, witl three and a half feet upou the Lower Rap ids. The Missouri his three and a half feet from St. Joseph to St. Louis, and falling, The lcvec, at St. Louis was crowded on Thursday and Friday with large quantitie of potatoes from the upper country. Up wards of 8.000 sacks bad arrived iu three days. One-fourth of these are affected by dry rot, a disease which is injuring the crop all along the Mississippi. Prices for pota toes were from thirty-five to forty-five cents per bushel, according to size and condition Several partita uf jjold seekers left St Louis last week for tbe K ansas gold regions near Pike's Peak. fitA Gcnuau named EdwnrJ Tress committed suicide at Memphis on Sunday last. It appenrs that he ciime to this couutry about two years since, with his wire and one child, possessing the handsome sum of $10,000. But be made ao unlucky investment of his fortune ia Chicago property and lost it aC. He then Amoved to Paducah, Kentucky, where his v. ife, for a short time,, taught mubic, while he went to Memphis iu search of ä cmploymcut for. himself. Ueiuj unable to procure work of any kind, and becoming tired of cxisteuce, he blew out his brains with a pistol.- The Louisrille Journal intimates that Tresä w as the same man who was arrested some time ago at Paducah on a charge of defrauding the Prussian government. . . üo. R. W. Thompson. It having beea announced in handbills that tho Hon. R. W. Thompson, of Torre Haute, would speak at a great Republican mass meeting at Marshall, Ills., iu connection with Senator Trumbull, Mr. Thumpson-has thought proper to publUn a card, in which he say? : This announcement is wholly without any authority from me. I have not the moät reinote idea of attendiug this meeting or any other which has for its object the achievement ot a Republican triumph. I will unite with Republicans or anti-Le-comptou Democrats against Leeowpton Dtmoeraetf, but it must be upon a eonervativt not a Republican platform." " : J Amciekt Marine Law. We are informed by a historical writer, that some two thousand years ago, among the ancient Germans, there Vaa a tribe or nation called the Suevians, who would not ' suffer wine to be brought into their territory, because, said they, it enervates the miud and unfits the body for exercise or labor. The circulation of the Loudon Timet is stated to be oa the wane. The issue of j cheap daily papers damaging the leviathan ' ofthepr"f.

We coucur heartily in the folio wiug para graph from the same impartial paper: :ud if the people of South Carolina have afforded au instructive lesson on this point, and confuted in the most effective manner tbe impeachments sought to be placed upon them, tbe Administration, iu like manner, deserves due credit for the efficiency and hu manity with which it has dischorged its duties in the premises. Odd Fellowship Declimkg.' The Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows, in scisiou at Washington, has received reports of the state of the Order in the United States for the past vear. The only States which report a posi tive prosperity are üew Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Louisiana, aud Canada West. In Canada East the Order has died out in New York it makcä no progress; while in Virginia and Kentucky, there is a perceptible falling off. This rapid decline is due mostly to the financial Fy.stcni of the Order. The benefits arc out of all proportion to tbe income. H-ganized on the principle of a health insurance, it bestows in sick dues far more than it receives irom the regular dues of tbe members. Tue OrncfAL Ke-tlts Maine.
