The folt lowing iä the nccount given ly Mr. Charles BrcH'3,. one of the ittrvivora of the ill-fated ' . ' Austria j I took passage at Southampton on the 4th ' i.i the steamship Austria, Capt. Ueydtmann, i wh'eh left Hamburg on the 2d. We sailed at ; o v. m. un tue l-iu tue wear tier was more 1 favorable, and ou the 13lh a speed of eleven , knots had been obtained, and all were in i high hopea of reaching New York by the ; 18th. At a little after 2 o'clock P. M., I j w.w on the quaiter deck. I saw a dense ; voiutne of smoke burst from the after entrance of the steerage. Some women run aft, exelainiir.ff. " The ship is oil fire, what will become of us ? " The ship was instant ly put at half speed, at which she continued ( until tue magazine exploded, trora which I infer the engineers were instantly suflucated. I only walked from where 1 was on - tlie rjurirter deck to the waist of the ship, ; when I saw the flamed breaking through tho lighu amidships. As the ship was head to the wiud, the lite traveled with fearful , rapidity. I iheu v. e.itto the man at the wheel, and told him to put the vessel with her side to the wiud. He hesitated probably did not understand me, as he was a native of Hamburg. I then got a. German gruilemaa to , speak to him.- At this time I saw sonic ' persons lcttitip down the boat on the port side of the quarter-deck. What became of ' the boat I don't know, but think she was i crushed under the screw. I , then went to ' let a boat over from the starboard side of ! the quarter-deck, but the moment we laid our hand.H on the rope, there were so many people who crowded into it that we could i not lift it off the blocks. We therefore left i it for a few minutes, until the people got ' out, when we returned, and launched it over the side of the ship, w hen, the people all ..lushing- into it aaic, it descended with great ; violence into tho-water, and was instantly : owamped, all the people being washed out : excepting three, who held ou to the sides. I We then let down a rope, and pulled up one j person, who proved to be the steward. J Another, in the act of bc'.nj hauled up, was ' strangled by the rope. The fire now came on too fiercely to atj tempt to get any more from the swamped t boat. ' All the tirst cabin passeug-er3 were on the poop, with the exception of a few gentlemen, who must have smothered iu the smoking-rooui. .Many of the second cabin passengers were also on the poop, but a number of them got shut into their cabins by tho tire. Some of them were pulled up through the ventilator, Jjttt the greater number could not be extricated. The last woman that was drawn up said there were six already suifocated. We now perceived that the ship had got her head to the wind again, so that the flames came over tho quarler-deck. In consequence of the crowd 1 could not get to the wheel-house to ascertain the reason, but I was informed that the hcluiimau had deserted his post, and that the vessel, being left to herself, headed to the wiud of her own accord. At this time the scene ou the quarter-deck was indescribable and truly heart-rending. Passengers were running frautically to and fro husbands seeking taeir wives, wives in search of their children, relatives looking after relatives, mothers lamenting the loss ! f their children, some wholly paralyzed by 1 fear, others madly crying to be saved; but a lew perfectly calm and collected. The i flames pressed so closely upon them, that mauy jumped into the sea, relatives clasped the sea together, and the stewardess and as sistant steward, arm in arm, followed. One Hungarian gentlemen, with seven fine children, four of them girls, made his wife jump iu. then blessinshis six oldest children, made I them jump in one after the other, and fol lowed tnem witn an intant in nis own arms. I, about this time, was standing outside the bulwarks, holding on by the davits, i. leaning out to avoid tho Hamos. whioh wore . ... , T ..,' . j d.i.. u o i uuiu ' uuui uuuer me, &piun:ng uy a rope sun I tachtid to the ship. As the oare were tied j in her, I thought, if I could pet to her, I would be enabled to save, myself and some others. - - - I let thyself down by a rope, passing over a man who was clinging to it, but who refused to come with me; I took a pen-knife to cut the tackle ; the large blade broke, and I then severed it with the small blade. The ehip passed ahead. As the screw approached I found the boat drawn toward it. I tried to keep the boat off, but the screw caught and capsized her over me. I dived away from the ship and came to the surface near a boat with the keel upward; I got on her, and by pressing on one side, with The assistance of a wave she righted, but was still swamped. The oars had been knocked out by the crew. The only thine: I could find in her to paddle with was some laths nailed together as a sheathing for her sides. When I looked around, the ship was a quarter of a mile away from me, I could see the ladies aud gentlemen jumping off the poop into the water in twos and threes, some of the ladies in flames. Several hesitated to leap from the burning ship until the last moment, as the height was twenty-two feet, and were only at length compelled to throw themselves off to avoid a more painful death. In hnlf an hour not a onl was to be seen ou
the poop. I pulled after the ship and picked up a German who was swimming stoutly ; 1 got him beside me in the boat, and we paddled after the ship with the laths ; I now saw a Tessel under sail approaching; she reached the steamer at about 6 P. JI., we continued pulling towaid them, and about halfpast 1 o'clock, after being five hours in the water, got within hail of the sailing -vessel, which put ofF a boat and took us: ou baard. She proved to be "the French bark Maurice, Capt. Ernest HeiiRtid, of Nantes, bound from .Newfoundland for the Isle of Bourbon, with fish. She had up to that time, rescued forty passengers of the' burning steamer, chiefly, taken off the bowsprit, though a few Were picked up floating around. At about' 8 o'clock one of the metalic boats came op with -beut 23 persons, including the .first nnd third officers; afterward three or four men were piqked m,y - floating on a piece of the broken boat. . ". 1 The second mate was taken up, having been swimming, with nothing to float him, for six hours. The second ami third officers were severely burned; one male passenger was burned frightfully, and some other male passengers slightly. There w?re but six women saved, three of. whom were burned, one in a shocking manner. Capt. Ilcnaud acted with the utmost kindness. He gave clothes as far as he could furnish them to the suffering pasengers, aud acted as a nurse, doctor and surgeon to the burned people, dressing the w ounds of the females with a delicacy and tenderness that evinced a benevolent and amiable disposition. I did not see an officer of the ship during the fire, and am certain there was not one of them or the crew on the poop, except a man at the wheel for a short time. I understood that when the Captain heard of the lire, he rnshed on the deck without a cap, and when he 3aw the flames, exclaimed, "We are all lost." He tried to get out a boat, which, when let down, was swamped, and he, whether accidentally or not I do not know, fell into the sea, and was soon left far behind. The fourth officer was in his boat.- - He cut her loosev from the davits ; was carried under the screw and smashed, and several in her drowned, three or four uu-n escaped on a fragment, and were picked up. by the Maurice, as before stated. About the same time one metalic life-boat was let down from the port bow and swampel, but got cleared away with about 33 passengers in her, including the first and third officers aud several women. The men in this boat capsized her two or three times in trying to clear her out of water. Ten persons were thus drowned, including some women. They afterward bailed her out with life preservers cut iu two, nnd pulled to the Maurice, having picked up two or three passengers before reaching the bark. Altogether there were sixty-seven souhi taken into the Maurice duriug the night. A Norwegian bark came up with the steamer the next morning, r.nd a 1 oat was observed going around the burning ship. They may have picked up a few peräor.s, but only a. very lew. The Maurice had no communication with the Norwegian.- At arout 7 o'clock the Maurice sailed, to Fayal to deposit the rescued passengers. At about 2 o'clock the same afternoon, she fell in with tho bark Lotus, Capt. Trefy, of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, from Liverpool to Halifax. As I was anxious to get on British territory, Capt. Trefy kindly gave me passage. He was also anxious to take all the American citueus, but there was such a rush of foreigners into the boaU that only ouc load of eleven could be got oil', and even several of these were foreigners. The fire is known to have arisen from very culpable negligence of some of the crew.' The captain and surgeon considered it expedient to fumigate the steerage with burning tar. . Tls operatioa was to be performed by the boatswain under the superintendence of the fourth officr. The boatswain heated the end of a chain to dip.iuto the tar to produce smoke. The eud became too hot to hold, and he let it drop upon the deck, to which it set fire. The tar upset, i.nd immediately all about was iu flames. A feeble attempt was made to extinguish it, but without success. There was nothing at hand to meet such an emergency. The rescued passengers saved nothing but the 'clothes on their backs, nnd even tire greater part of these were torn off and otherwise lost.. Six hundred souls were supposed to be on board, including many women and children. Mr. Brew is the only British subject saved. He is in the British civil service, and on his way to British Columbia. He will proceed to Boston in the steamer Eastern State on Tuesdav, en route to New York.
Victoria' Visit to Cauada. The Daily Xews, a London journal of i character and influence, insists that though : neither Queen Victoria nor the youtig Prince of Wales can visit t'anaia this year, ouc of i them may be expected in 1859. It says:! " By steam aud rail Galway can be reached ! in about a day. In sis days the royal yacht j might reach Newfoundland or Xova Scoti.i i from flalwav. Six weeks would nmnH- ! suffice for the out and home voyage to and j from the principal cities of Iritih North America. Such a visit would do more than t more substantial benefits to rivet the loyalty of the colonists to the Crown. Our colonial , fellow-subjects feel, and not without reason, I that they aro scarcely made sufficient ac- j count of in the mother country. . I .-It was a mistake, wheu sending telegraph- f ic messages to the President of the United j States, to overlook entirely the Governors j aud Legislatures of our own American Pro- j viuces. The undercurrent of resentment j which flows from this neglect might bo ma- j terially checked by a royal visit to Canada. As far as regards time, we have shown that there are no iusuperable obstacles to such a visit.-; And for our sailor Queen, with, all the luxurious appliances of her royal yacht, it would, we confidently believe, be a source of unmingled pleasure. . The glorious St. Lawrencu would afford spectacles, yet ungazed on by any crowned head. Elizabeth 'ike the poet's Gloriana, iu whom she was shadowed forth was contented to receive from her adventurous knights tidings of the strange New World they had visited. Victoria may see it with her own eyes." If Queen Victoria can visit her Canadian subjects, she will certainly cross the line and see her American friends. Der personal character is deservedly so high that all truehearted Americans would gladly welcome one who is such an ornament to her sex. As the good woman, the faithful wife, and the affectionate mother, rather than as theesalted sovereign, Victoria would certainly have the wanrest welcome in this country. Let her try it. JGaESTbe Sullivan Democrat says that the hog cholera is fast sweeping off the hogs in that vicinity.

I also cert ify, that I have compared the list of policies furnished me by the President as on the books of the Company with valuation tablos sufficiently to test the. ac uracy of the results given by the Secietary, and find the values as stated within to b numerically correct.
