tCWDAT MOUSING , .8EPT. 21 . - ...Tb Meeting t Ktwbarg. - On Saturday, three or four hundred of the hardy and i$dopendent voters of Warrick count, assembled at Newburg to listen to Fpeechea from Mr." Laird, "candidate forthe State Senate, and Gen. Jo. Lane, the Sena tor elect, from . Oregon, and at present the volunteer cauva-sser for Niblack in this Congressional District. Mr. Laird epoke with great force and effect as an anti-Lecompton Democrat. After expressing many sound vicwa upon State policy, and declaring his opposition to bank?, he took up the theme of general politics the Kansas policy of the Administration, and the Bill English bill. The most striking point he made in, this EOt effective part of hi3 speech, waa reading from English's speech made in March last, that portion of it, in which he declared that the vote by the people of Kansas in January, rejecting the Lecompton Constitution had annihilated it and rendered it null and void as a rejected instrument. That rota, Lfl saiJ, tock away all its rital force; it was a dead Constitution that conld not be resuscitated by any power on earth. 1 Yet in less than thirty days after, tbi. tame Mr. English introduced a bill into Conres3 to thrust this rejected, dead and offensive Constitution tack upon the people of Kansaj, well sugared over with bribes to induce them foVaccept the abortion. The thing that waa so dead in March according to bis own theory of popular rights that no power on earth could revive it, he attempted to dig up, restore to life, and bind the people of Kansas under it, by his fa mous bill. The most corrupt federalis uever had the hardihood to sustain such an act in Congress, as to take a rejected Constitution, made null and void according to English's own declarations and urge it by bribery rtpon a people who had condemned and spurned it. The inconsistency of English views in March and his conduct after the entry of the Nebraska land in April, was made to appear so palpable ami gros, that an expression of indignant contempt spread itself over the countenances of the whole audience. Mr. Laird gave way, by courtesy, before he had finished his addrcss,to Ger. Jo. Lan , who occupied the stand for two hours and a hil with & verbatim repetition of tbo speech he made at the Court House in this city, and which has been reiterated at every point in the district where he could get aa audience. It is a very tiresome and injudicious collection of Lccoinpton Kcw!paporial crudities, that have been afloat for six months, in the administration journals. The only portion of it that is the Ceucral's, was the fulsome and absurd laudation of Duchanan, who, in the cstetm of Gen. Joe, is the "greatest raU riot," the greatest statesman," the greutest man," thc greatest Democrat," and" the "greatest of the greatest," in all tiling that the country has produced, excepting, pcrhapf, in some small degree, General Washington. Mr. Iluchanan, as General Lane informs ns, has been enamored of the constitution a'.I hio life. u lie is now married to it is iü lawful u cdcled husband. Sleeps with it bugs it to his bosom liasuo other oarthly oljcct of affection. He loves it with his whole heart Mt is the only object of his eolicitude, end the off pring he If gels from it will t tbe only legacy be will have to beqiie.ith to his country." Gen. Lane produced no marriage certificate, but gave lu3 testimony as a subscribing witness. Mr. Buchanan i3 acknowledged to be an Irishman by descent. It is one of the domestic privileges of the lords of the Mellisian race to discipline their lcttcr halves to their own will and pleasure ; and, if need be, cuitom among them, warrant the nzc of the roil and strap and a little marital force and coercion. From evidence, we believe that Geu. Joe Lane's Mrs. Duchamm has been tuoot unmercifully disciplined, and brought into al ject submission and when she refuses la y'eld to her master, sho is subject, yet to tho mo?t cruel and infaniom assaults from the "greatest of(thc greatest." Our fears are that unless she is rescued from the embrace and bed cf the old tyrant, her life will b- in danger. At the close of his notable speech, Gen. Lane called upon Judge Law to address the racking. The Judge rose and said, "the tcople had lcn four hours in session, and their powers of attention had been exhausted. At another time he would address them. He had, however, one word to say which be would now declare: He had been in the Democratic ranks for more than a quarter of a century ; he expected to continue in it, and die iu it and his sons to follow in his footsteps after he was gone. He stuck to its usages and discipline. He was a rival with Mr. Niblack last year for the nomination to Congress. He was defeated, but he turned round anl gave Uli rival a hearty support. He- would have no honors nor office but those conferred by the genuine democracy. He would not go t i Cougress if he were sure he could be elected by five thousacd majority, as the candidate of Black Republicans, Knw Xothings, and bolting Auti-Lecompton Democrats, or any such infamous and unholy combinations. What is the use of sending a man to Congress with no party to sustain him? What can a Representative do for his district without he is w ith tbc majority to carry his measures? Ue responded generally to the sentiments CJor. Lane had uttered.'' This extraordinary declaration took people by snrprise. It sounded strangely to there ! ..new me jnage uaa oecn, ior wie iai u nth, one of the most decided atik. uioa üe.uats in the strict; aa ont3k.kcp rjoiicr m au nu avowed opiniom ; a devoid .fiv.-n-l and nelrnirer of Douglas, And .:t Mprvvr of h'u principles and hi3cxur5c; tr-t v m iKono-prafnt-: tTh!c.h.:Lt
Judgo Uovcy out t a candidate, and in which he entered no protest made no objection but gare his tacit, if not open approvaL Tho manner in which Judge L was brought out" indicated some arrangement and concert in the matter. Mr. Laird was entitled to tho floor to reply to General Lane ; but the latter cut him off by calling upon Judgo Law, who had not been announced as a speaker. - - The weakness and fallacy of the argument offered by Judge Law,make his new position more unsatisfactory to .thoe who had reposed faith in his Integrity and consistency. Is it true that a Representative in Congreas can do no service to his district unless he is an adherent of the majority ? Is every district in the Union that sends an opposition to be denied all rights and justice ? to be treated as an outlawed province ? Do the citizens want any thing from the general government but their rights ? "Will they ever ask for more ? Will they ever be supplicAnU for iU favors ? Will the crcat Na
tional Dtmoeratic party, which the Judge says sway the country, ever deny to auy section or district, its juot rights because it eendd to Congress a representative of iU own choice? Such an intimation, though coming from the Judge, U a foul libel on the fcarty to which he says he ha3 belonged for a quarter of a century, and shows that hi3 long adherence to it has failed to infuoo its genius into his head and heart The Democratic party will do exact justice to cvery portion end district of the Union, whether the people cnd a friend or fuc to its principles to Congress, and thi? district may be sure of all its just right and interests being protected by the national Democracy, whether Hovey or Niblack go to Congress. It docs not attempt to avenge itself on the people for any ot their acts, right or wrong in its own view. But what party will have the power in the next Congress to grunt favor?, if they are to be aked? Certainly not the Buch-anan-Lcconiptou party, or the Niblack fiction. Tbey will lc a miA-raMe minority, and he must be a humble solicitor for aid in the next Congress, either from Hhuk Republican!! or the Anti-Lcmiuptnnites, to carry any Measure be may attempt. The men who will r tbc arbiters in all contested question in the next IIou.e, will be the independent band of A nti-Lecompton Democrat. Tbey will shnic the Legislation, and determine who shall Ijo the next President, should tbe elertiou os it is probable come to the House. If, therefore, this district wbhc3 to secure for itself a weight in tic councils of the nation that shall be felt upon its future destiny, let it send Hovcy, a man of nerve and talent, who will twome a leader in tho kind Ibat will lead the leadcis of loth the other parties. Iu that way will tbe pcculinr want of tliij did rit t bcrurc to command attention. Illinois Mime Vmir Oroimtl. Ckxtralu, Marion Count r. III., 1 Septem KT 15th,185S. CaT Judge Law, we are Informed,' has started upon a campaign through the counties of Warrick and Sincer, to help restore the waning fortunes of Niblack. The Judge has' beert, daring the winter and summer, a most decided anti-Lecompton Democrat, fearless and bold, as he ever iin the declaration of his opinions, in his ' denunciation of the iniquities of Lecomptonism, and the ill judged course of the Administration. . He was privy to the movements that brought out Hovcy, and. if he did not approve he did not oppose. them. He is tbe professed, political and personal friend and main adriscr of Senator Douglas, 'and has been a supporter of his pretensions to the Presidency. How he can find it in bt heart, at this hour of the struggle, to enlist in the ranks of Niblack, aud advocate the re-election of a man whose whole course in Congress he has condemned, is beyond our comprehension of the motives of human action. It i one of the strange results of the secret, mysterious influences we sec operating all around ns. 'We 'can' guess who holds the thread of them, though we cannot trace them through all their ramificatious. The Judge is an honorable man- as " they arc all honorable men" and can probably give a rea.on for his change of opinion. We arc curious to hear them. k$T An iron horse stall was exhibited at the recent St. Louis fair, that elicited the warmest commendations of borsemeu.
