Mr. Ceo. S. Soxxtag has opened a splendid hardware establirfhrnent iinniedlately below the Branch Itatik, on Main street. Wc call attention to his advertisement in today's paper. He devotes hia whole time and ntten'ion to his business, has purchased bis stock with great care, nnd h-ir.s liim-i-clf to coripetc with any similar establishment in the West. The Rev. Eleazep. Tie war dcpivrtmeut has jitat closed a contract with Snyder of Philadelphia, to furnish sitteen thousand felt hats for the army, at 2 75 each. This is apparently a round price for felt hats, when furnished by the sixteen thousand; wc can buy first class i.ats of that description, manufactured in this city by Messrs. Maconier & Vnutier, for less money at retail. It I1.-13 the oder of the Utah Army mule contracts aliout it. -a ey The dedication of the Terre Haute Female College took place on Tuesday last. The pleasures of the occasion were somewhat marred by the severe ruin storm. A large crowd was present notwithstanding ihe weather. Col. TbonipMus address is pronounced by the Ttrrc Haute Journal a decided political opponent of the Colonel's to have been " a most chaste and eloquent discourse; it was pre-eminently appropriate, and wo3 listened to by a crowded audience with deep attention." xK.tpout or UttEADsnrrs. The New York Pot of Wednesday last says : It is a remarkable fact, worthy of note, that there is not at this time, a single bushel ofgraiuon thiplioard, for cither Liv(rjool, tiUsgow or Loudon, nor a single barrel of Hour, with the exception of a lot of 1,200 luirrels on loard.hip to clear for London on Saturday ; and ?o far as we have Wen able to learn, there is nut a single buhclof grain in process of shipment to cither jort, nor a ltrrcl of flo ur, nor any provisions, (excepting 500 barrels of lard), unless private engagements have been made this morning. Tu Hank or America. The Paducnh Herald says a despatch was rereived there from ClnrkJTxlIe, that the Pank of America was paying specie for its notes. The editor adds: " We have a personal knowledge of the pecuniary condition of the owners and managers of these banks, and we know that their private fortunes are by far greater than the whole circulation of thess banks. Amongst the owners and managers, arc Winston J. Davie, Montgomery I). Davie, Ambrose Davie, A. O. Henry, and Dr. Drane, all possessing large fortunes." Schools. The citizens of Fort Wayne have raised, by voluntary contributions, $3,000 to sustain their free schools during the year. This sum, added to the legal appropriations, will keep np the schools, it is said, for a year. Is there not in this movement, according to the Supreme Court, a practical violation of the Constitution, which declares that the system of schools should lc uniform throughout the States. If it 1 wrong for the corporate authorities of a city to establish a better school in the town, than the rural districts have, it is not wrong for the citizens in their private capacity to do the same thing? If citizens can tax themselves, to sustain schools, why not let them do it through their town and city authorities ? 2?"
