J Sir : I hare the honor to inform the Dcartiuent that after a long chase, I ovcr- . liuu'.cil and qapturcd at 6 o'clock tliis evening a slaver, surrendering under American colors. Tho Olive Branch is an old pajcr of much celebrity and we imagine it will not fail to sustain its high reputation, under its present accomplished managers. Chixue Sccar Caxi. -Since our inquiry in regard to the crop of the Chinese sugar ranc, wc have received several reports from farmi'H in Spencer, Warrick, and Gibson counties, who have cultivated from a half to .two or three acres of the cane ; they report nhe crop as being excellent, and ij now just maturing. It hag been much less effected by the recent drouth than corn on the same land. One cultivator writes us that it does not do as well on the richest bottom lands as on sandy and dry uplands. From the report we have received, the quantity planted this year is much larger than it was Jast ; the unfavorable Spring so delayed the farmers in getting in their regular planting .that they had no time to bestow on fancy
crops. There are numerous inquiries for . small sugar mills fur pressing the cane. 'Those who have them for sale would do welt to let it be known. Six Men Drowned at Mllwaakle. On Friday the 27th the vicinity of Mil waukee was v kited with a heavy storm, during w hich several boats and small craft which was caught by it in the harbor and in the offing of the Lake were capsized and .six persons perished. The Milwaukie papers give the following details: About four in the afternoon, Robert P. . Jennings, a merchant, nnd John H.Su'.iirnn, . a yotiu lawyer, started out into the lake in . a sail boat. They were seen alout five o clock near three quarters of a mile out, headed cast. Oa Saturday the Decatur went in quest of the missing parties, but no trace .-f them could be found. Later in the day, however, portions of a small boat were dis- . covered, which were identified hs belonging to the one in which the unfortunate young men set sail. The same night a little fishing vessel, owned by Henry Buchraid, and wanned by himself and two others, was capsized near the entrance of the harbor, and two of the men drowned. Theircoraponion . escaped by clinging to the boat which was sxm washed ashore. On Saturday evening the bodies of two men, evidently victims of the same gale, were found on the shore a few miles from the city, which were ascertained to be those of two men who were in a fishing boat on Friday. They must have perished in the same gale with the others. Jiajr We invite the attention of the sick and afflicted, to the advertisements in our columns of Dr. Easterly's Iodine and Sarsaluvilla, and Gridley's Salt Rheum and Tetter Ointment, Dr. Carter's Cough Balsam, Dr. Iiaker'i 8icific, Dr. IIooj.er's Female t'ordial, and Dr. Eastcrley,s Fever and Ague Killer. Jiddah (Ara bia) was bombarded by the British steamer Cyclops, in consequence, it is said, of the delay of the Turkish authorities in granting reiaration for the recent massacre there ot the English Consul and others, iheoyii.4is tlmllnJ tho witjr fni Tlvc days, when Is.nail Pacha, the Turkish Commissioner, finally made his appearance in the place and promised to arrange the matter. lie subse quently executed eleven of the assassins, and sent four others to Constantinople to lie dealt with there by the SulUn. The Cyclops then took her departure. The despatch conveying the above intel'.ipence gives no accoun of the extent of the damage done to Jid l.ih bv the bombardment nor of the immediate grievance which impelled the commander of the Cyclops, to so summary a proceeding, na it was pre viously understood that he was to await the arrival of Ismail Pacha before proceeding to extremities. The liombiirdment of Jiddah by the English has caused a great sensation in France. 8ä? The pyrotechnic display, on the 2d inst, in New York city, must have lieen magnificent. The fallowing is a description of the grand finale of the display. It t urely must luve been worth going a good wavg to see. XXI. C.rand Finale. Tlie laving of the Atlantic Cable. In this piece some new principles will be attempted for the first time in the Pyrotechnic art; the open portion will represent the Niagara and Agamemnon in the center, with the tenders, Gordon and Valorous, ahead; on the extreme ends of the piece will be two light houses, connected by a line of rolling waters, on which the ships will slowly move toward their destination, on arriving at which the center is suddenly trau i-furroed into a maguificent Tcmplo of Science in all the pplendor of the dazzling colors, assisted by mechanical contrivance?, of which the art is capable. Canopied by an arc ot star, (which rest uikju revolving columns, upon whose bases are recorded the names of Franklin, Morse und Field), will npenr a group of figures representing Science uniting Columbia and üritaunia. Over these is an entablature, with the mol.'o; "The electric flash hall belt the earth." The trowniu&r portion shows the American coat-of-arma, iu which is entwined the bnion Jack with the Stars aud Stripes. JgfAn ingenions artist of Philadelphia had prciared au unique epitaph to be set over the iolitical grave of the three nicmlrs of Congress from that city, who are to lie buried the first of next month. Here is the inscription: Beneath this Monument of sympathetic brass, nn appreciative Constituency has caused to le tleos'.U'tl all of the little that there ever was of FLOKEXCK, PHILLIPS AND LANDY, Who, elected us Representatives of the City wherein the Declaration of Ind Iendence of British bondage was written, agreed upon, and first proclaimed to the world, deliberately Misrepresented the People of that City, and made them apparently the supporters of a domestic bondage inconceivably mere infamous. The Signers of the Detlaration pledged their sacred honor, and preserved it untarnished. The little which thtc men ever had was anything but sacred, and is now gone forever. Genius, prostituted though it le in seeking to icrietuate the nicutory of Iraitm-s to Freedom, ha condescended to preserve their features. The table I .flow contains THItEE DOUGH FACES, So accurately mouldel, that to all who look tqon them they fehall be a hiding and an astonishment As their whole career in Congress Was a falsehood to their Constituents, so even in the grave they continue lo TUKY DIED OF LECOMPTON". All along the route from Lisbon to Marseilles he had been the recipient of distinguished consideration from public officers and private citizens. At Gibraltar the senior officer in command of the British naval forces at that point extended marked courtesies, and urged the ex-President und Mrs. Pierce to take passage for Tangiere in one of Her Majesty's public armed vessels. At Marseilles the French authorities, beaded br the prefect and the millitary cowraarder, were especially attentive and zealous in acts of hospitality. TLe health of Mrs. Tierce, we arc sorry to perceive, docs not appear to have been substantially improved.
