Tsstifar If St. We are indebted to Mr. Patrick Burke, our indefatigaUe assessor, for the following Komparative statement of the assessment for 1857 and 1858. Mr. Durke has performed ibis duties most satisfactorily to the Board of Equalization, who made few changes in Mr. B.'s figures. Every lot has been assess ed by itself and upon actual Tiew. There is : apparently a reduction in the value of real rUte; but it is not real; there has lieen in truth a large" actual advance in every de.cription of real property daring the last six .months. In years past an exaggerated as- . scucd value wis placed on the ground, while the improvements were taxed at half their value, in order to encourage building and to dweouruge the holding, by non residents, of large numbers of unimproved lots. This . olicy has, this year, Iwen changed, and both have been assessed at their cash value. The returns do not include the amount of Bank capital in the city, which is exempt from Uxation, and which amounts to $225,000; EYANSV1LLE TAXES. I Talis ofl. .
