be is making the most of both in the canvas. Wheat. As far as wc can learn from tlic fanners in this vicinitr, the wheat crop jToves, ujton threshing it, to be sujiericT in quality and less in yield, than was expected -at harvest time. There is a very Kcneral disappointment experienccil by millers in regard to the quantity and quality of that which has been offered in the market. CrJT Clen. Cass" health is aekuowledgeil by his friends to Ik? very feeble and preen riiius. The duties of the ftate department are tx severe fur one of his advanced age. He visited Sroiiington, Cum., last week, to U' present at the weilding of his daughter, who was married to a member of a foreign diplomatic corjis. Corx Crop. The drouth is ser"uuly effecting the projects of the com crop along the Ohio river. Wc have reports from the Wrders of the river from Cairo to Louisville, and the unanimous opinion is that unless avc have rain soon, the corn crop will lc reduced or 50 per cent. The drouth is more severe on the river, we believe, than in the interior. CrSThc M'Kean county, IVnnn Hank, Ave learn by the Potter county Journal, gave up the ghoet a few days ago. The cashier decamped with $71,000 of its funds, was arrested in Xew York, and committed in default of bail. The bills of the lank have been thrown out in Xew York. Mr. Kinpsl.ury, ils president, will jcoiire the holders tf its issue against lost, U-ing able , and Avillino; to do mi. This is one of the luinks iTMrtcd ou lately by the committee of inAestigjition. JCfe)? Little is said in the papers this scaon upon the subject of the Chinese sugar cane, which attracted so much attention last vear. The onlv indication that wc see of its being cultivated is the sight of a numler of small mills and evaporating kettle?, manufactured in Cincinnati, in transit through the city. Almost every cultivator was satisfied with last years experiments, but wc hear nothing of their operations this year. The price of molasses is certainly high enough to stimulate the culture of any thing that will afford a supply of it. ' Mr. Editor. The first of September has Wen named as the day upon which the laying of tire Atlantic Cable is to le celebrated throughout the Union. Xo public demonstration of consequence has been made in this city, as yet, while our sister towns have jriven undoubted evidence of their interest in the matter. Shall we let the first of Septemtter pass unnoticed? Shall Kvansville be the only city in the West unmind ful of the great event of the age ? Do not the foreigners in Eransville wish to commemorate the day which linked this their adopted land with their old homes across the water? Let us have a celebration. Fine Art In KvanaTllle. A day or two since avc visited the studio of Mrs. S. L. Fleagler, onSeconl street next to the li"ir?ft rresbyterian Church, and fpent a p!cas.nt half hour examining the jKiintings of her pnpiLs. A small number of yuunjj ladies meet every morning to receive in-t ruction in oil painting, and the progress of the class is as indicative of the taste ami industry of the young misses, as of the skill and genius of their teacher. Most of the pieces are in an embryo state, but the visitor can form some idea of what they will be when the fair artists have added the last touches. The interest manifested by the class in the prusccutiou of their work evinces a taite for painting, and the half finished pictures at the studio give promise of future attainment of a high order. Young Lvdies who wish to acquire a beau-. tiful accomplishment, can do so under the ,y,.-cction of Mrs. Fleagler, who is fully co mpetent to teach painting in water or oil jgj - We invite the attention of the sick and afflu. ted, to the advertisements in our colurawot Dr. Easterly's Iodine and Sarsaparilla, aad Jridleys .Salt Rheum and Tetter Ointment, Dr. Carter's Cough Balsam, Dr. Baker' Fpttcific, Dr. Hooper's Female Cordial, and Dr. Eaüterlcy.s Fever and Ague Killer. She returns to-morrow morning leaving our city at 10 o'clock for Louisville. The Trader left for Bowling Green yesterday evening with a large lot of groceries.— She will be back from Bowling Green in about eight days. ———<>——— Myaterions DUappearanec Its X. V. Cltj-i The wife of Capt. Brenunan of the United States Army at present etatione! at Key Wcst left his wife reiiding with her mother, Mrs. Crane, on is taten Island. On the 20th of July, Mrs. Crane, with a son and her danghtcr, Mrs. Riennman, came up from the Inland to New York City, and on leaving the ferry boat, at the battery, they parted upon their several trrads and visits, witli the understanding that they Would meet again ort the Ix'at at 4 o'clock. The mother and son were punctual to that appointment, but the daughter Avas not. The two former returned to the Island, not donbting-, of course, that the third, Mrs. BrcnbtrlaaS, w?ts accidentally left behind, or iieerssahlor delaved. v a by some engagement, and that she would t ike the liext boat at 5J o'clock ; but that boat arrived at the Island without her ; nor did she apjtcar to her now watchful friends when the last boat by which she could reach home ou that day arrived, at 8 o'clock. So uuaccountable an absence naturally created some anxiety, and that anxiety grew iuto alarm, and then into despair, when they learned the next day, that she actually left the house of a friend the afternoon before, to go to tlie 4 o'clock Ihiat, but that she was afterward seen in Broadway, apparently on her way to the boat of 5 o'clock, since which time tlie mot diligent search by her friends and by the silicc, has completely failed to discover even the slightest trace of her. It is useless to suggest any of the many causes Which may have induced her to disapear, or compcll- d her disappearance, so utterly and Avithout leaving a sign lehind hei on this point ti e imagination may lie left unaided. But this only should be said that there is nothing, we arc assured, in the relations of Mrs. BrennutMi to her family or her friends, nothing in her Avorldly circumstances, nothing in her character, nothing in 1it state of mind or state of health, that admits for a motnciU the Msjhility of a sedct itrinJrtMre or prolonged absence to lie voluntary acts on her part. She Avas happy iu a retired and pleasant home, Avhere an aged mother and young child required her constant and affectionate care, and the unvarying cheerfulness and untiring devotion Avhich she gave to these daily duties forbid the supposition that she could have consciously and delilieiately aljandoued them." N e are left, then, to the wildest ! conjecture as to what can have happened to j a l.uly unassuming, modest, in the sad and f soltcrgarb of mourning-weeds, but not imai tractive, and in the prime of womanlio'sl, on so public a thoroughfare a.
