J. a few days ago, have published an account of their observations, among which we quote the following as most remarkable: "As we neared the city we selected the Central Park for our landing place, and began to descend. As we descended we crossed the Hudson river, and here the usual phenomenon was noticed, the bed of the river, with its deep and shallow places, being distinctly seen. The editor of the Patterson <Guardian>, who seems to have had a conversation with the aeronauts, says: "What they say of seeing the bottom of the North river is of interest. All the bottom was observable to them as they passed over, and its channels and flats could be distinctly seen. The channel appeared like a deep glutch. They say, however, that they can see no fishes, which is a fact they cannot account for, while the bottom of the rivcr is so clearly visible to them. Will not some of our men of science explain the phenomena here alluded to? <N. Y. Times>.
Aasthcr sf the Ptfca Cstx Burglar Arrested. The Petersburg Report give an account
of the arrest of Robt. Webb, a plasterer by trade, who had heretofore sustained a good cnaracier, out proves to oe one ot tne gang of burglars that hare for sometime infested Knox, Pike, Daviess and surrounding counties. He wj taken at Washington, Daviess county, while at work and brought to Pike and thence carried to Knox. Two of his accomplices, Eobt. Walters and Ralph Edwards, who had been previously arrested, turned State w itnesses and testified against him: Walters testified that Webb made the proposition to him to rob Esq. Highland, stating that they conld get about 2,000 there that be (Wei , had plastered Highlands bouse, and knew where he kept his money that he had seen Mr. Highland take money out of the kitchen enpboard several timei, and pay it to braids in his employ. That he had found o 'it that there was a prayer meeting in that neighborhood every Wednesday night, which was attended by Esq. Highland and family. v alters further testified that on the next Wednesday night, Webb and himself went for the purpose of robbing Esq. Highland rode through Highlaud's lane before dark, dismounted, hitched their horses In the woods, and remained there till dark ; they then spread their coats on a pile of boards near H's house, and laid down to watch tbe movements within that a soon as they considered it safe to enter, they approached the kitchen through a porch that about that time Webb stumbled and fell, which made a noic that awakened the family. Esquire Highland testified that on the Habbath previous to tbe burglary, Webb and Henry Edwards (another of the clan who is now in our count v jail) took dinner at his house, and before they left, Webb inquired of him whether the neighborhood prayer-meeting was still kept up, what night in the week it was held ; and whether he and his family attended it ; that on the following Wednesday night he and his wife did not go to meeting, but remained at home and retired early to bed ; that they were soon awakened by a noise in the kitchen, and Mrs. II. got up, found the kitchen door open, and saw two men running through the house. Mr. Highland also stated that a part of his money was kept in a cupboard in the kitchen, and that be had taken ehauga from it in the presence of Webb : thu corroborating the testimony of Walters. Albion McCray recognized "Webb and Walters at the trial, as the same men that he set across White river, from Knox county, on the morning after the burglary, just alter day light. He also gave some description of their horses, which was testi fied to by v alters, and which were seen by two other witnesses to pass through Highland! lane on the evening previous. There wa other circumstantial evidence produced at the trial which went to substantiate the testimony of Walters. Alph. Edwards testified that Webb and Walters (both being together) afterwards told him of their attrmpt to rob Esq. Highland, and the circum stances attending it, as proven by other witnesses; and that W ebb urged him (Edwards) to go with him to make a second trial, but that he (Edward's) refused to join him. Webb's bail was laid at $1,000, in default of which he was committed to jail at Vincennes. The Laboring Claaaea In Kuglsnd. A letter from an American traveler in Eugland to the St. Louis Democrat, contains the following remarks: The sojourner sees at every step, and on all sides, unmistakable proofs of the oppression of the lower classes by the higher. I am iersuaded from what I have seen in England, that this grows quite as much out of the dcqtisui of wealth, as of nobility. Overgrown capital creates greater inequalities, and exercises greater oppression ujsjn the lower classes, than titles and cornets. Mayhap this oppression has had its origin, and derives its strength from distinctions already created in society by rank and family. However Xis may. be, I could not but look with astonishment as well as pity, upon the millions of common laborers who cam, in whatever calling they may 1 engaged, only a bare subsistence with astonishment that all should seem so contentetl, aud with pity that they were compelled to submit to laws ami usages, which deprived them of more than half the just fruits of their labor. Laor nowhere in Great Hritnin receives its just reward. I have conversed freely with common laborers in the held, on the road, around the manufactories, and in the rities. In every case I find a remarkable degree of contentment with a lot which Providence has assigned them, but for intelligence they are not to be compared with the same class of people of the United States. Their knowledge extends to but few local objects or to those things pertaining to the work in which they arc engaged. The Manchester mills nnd print works differ but very little in the various processes of manufacture from those of Lowell, Mass., but I was nt once struck with the very great difference in other things. While the girl3 about the mills in Massachusetts look clean, well dressed, aud intelligent, those around Manchester appeared sickly, and often very uutidy in their dres?, while the interior of tho lactones, where thev sient ten hours every day at work, were very dingy and often badly venti lated. At Birmingham as well su Manchester, the work in motst of the establishments I vkited, even upon some iron fabrics, is done principally by women and girls. The immense workshops of Gillot, manufacturer of steel pens, nnd Jennings' papiermache works, in each of which are employed some 330 girls, I observed a great deal of neatness and apparent intelligence among the operatives. I was told they received better paj here than at Manchester the maximum of wages being here 10 shillings (2 50) per week, though the average a not probably more than half that sum. In my visits to the country towns, beyond the influence of the manufacturing districts, I noticed the same aspect of contented pov erty, small indeed is the pittance wnicn rewards a hard day's work, to a man who had only his hands to earn bi3 livelihood ; but small as it is, it is a melancholy fact that a large portion of it is spent in ale or beer. I hare seen but little stark druiikenncs among the laboring classes; tut I observe that the poorest laborer, taking bis' hard crust for his dinner, by the road side, must invariably have his mug of beer or ale to wash it down, which Utter is doubtless the most expensive part of his dinner. Ntwr Mkthod ot Raisiko the Price or Wheat. The Madison (Wisconsin) Patriot announces that the Democracy are going to ignore all divisions, take their stand on the Cincinnati Platfonn, and "restore general pros perity and a fair price for vhettt to tht Jartitert of n ttconnn. That would be a popular platfarm, but unfortunately, Democratic practice falls far short of their professions, and tbe jeople are finding it onjt.
