The Indianapolis Journal is authorized to "state positively " that Horace Greeley, of NewYork, will be present at the Fairof the Fayette county Agricultural Society, and deliver the annual address, on the 9th of Scp-lerutx-r. The boys in the Journal office say they have no hesitancy in asserting thatKtrtz, near the Post office, keeps on hand the largest and mot luscious watcrmellons to be found iu the city. They did ample justice to a couple of fine ones, scut around resterdav, and know the truth of what thev assert. JfejT A grand jury out South ignored a bill agaiut a huge negro for stealing chicken, and before discharging him from custody, the Judge bade him stand a reprimand; he concluded a follows: 44 You may go now, John, but ( shaking his fingers at him) let me w arn you never to appear here again." John with delight beaming in bis eye, and with a broad grin displaying a beautiful row of ivory, replied : 44 1 wouldn't bin dis time, Judge, only the constable he fotoh me." ———<>——— AN EVANSVILLE THIEF ARRESTED AT NEWBURGH.—A fellow calling himself Thomas Porter, made his appearance at Newburgh last Friday night, with a fine mule belonging to Esquire Rowley, of this city, which the stranger offered for sale next morning at $120. The <Democrat> says he was suspected; and Dr. McReynold's to amuse the thief till information could be sent to Evansville, traded for the animal, for which he agreed to pay $80. The seller not feeling very well, asked for a prescription. The Doctor administered a strong dose of ipecac, and after its operation, put him to bed. Before he recovered, Messrs. Fitzwilliams and Laughlin arrived from Evansville and took him into custody. His real name was found to be Eb. Beeler. The Doctor made no charge for medicine and attendance. ———<>——— The 31 oant Vernon Advocate. We have received copies of a beautiful little paper, published by the association of (ladies, for the purchase of Washington's tomb and homestead. The nper give in detail the proceedings of the a.uociation and full accounts of the efforts to rake fund. In it are published the uamc cf every contnbutor of either large or small sum. The collcitions arc made through regents ia each tate, who are appoin ted by the' Board of Iirectre3.ei at Richmond, Va. There hA3 lcen as t-t no announcement of one for this State; some public spirited and patri otic lady could acquire distinguished honor for herself and do credit to her State bj coming forward to aid the association in Indiana. A record of all the contributors and contributions will be made and precn cd at Mount Vernon, for future inspection. Those who aid in thia laudable work will have their names perpetuated for generations upon the honored lift, and while the presence of a name may not confer a great honor upon the giver, iu absence might ecause a blush to a dtscendent, who, an hun drcd years hence, should find no trace of the name descended to him among the do nors. It would bcitill more mortifying, to find a meagre or penurious list from one's native State in such a national record.
