"! Own Addreta. We commenced the excellent address of CoL Richard Owen of New Harmon v. de- I lirered At a meeting of citizens to form an ! AgTicnltaral Society for Posey county, to the attentive perusal of our farmers- 1 1 w ill be found on the first page. Now if the time to do something for the establishment of colleges for the education of farmers, mechanic, and practical men. They need science and learning for their own advancement, and (or succeja in their callings, as well as doctors, lawyeri, and other theoretical laborer. It is a too common remark that if a boy Is to learn a trade, or to be made a farmer " it is no use to send him to college, or gite Vim an education. " Why is it so ? Simply because tht kind of education he gets at our college is of no great benefit to him, for it is not adapted to hi wants! It in not becatae education is not a3 essential to the firmer, and mechanic, as to the professional man, but because the tort that h doled at collegia is not of the right kind for him. It is time that the farmer, the mechanic, and the laboring men demanded that their educational wants should be supplied. There is no reason nor rijht, in taxin? the State to endow colleges to
make lawyers and doctors, and the great presented under the origiiul circumstances 'mass of her productive citizens to whom to impose the Lcconipton Constitution upon kaowledge i3 as necessary, and a destribution Kansas though it were rejected by nincof it among them, would bring returns of tenths of its inhabitant. He adopts the an hundredfold its cost, to the resources and Bright doctrine that the authority of a tonrevenues of the State, should have no ad- Bthutional convention is absolute, and its vantage of education beyond the simplest acts need no confirmation by the people. primary chooL By a diffusion of scientific A correspondent says that after repeated education, among farmers, a better system home questions from Judge Hovey, whether of agriculture might be introduced by w hich he would vote for the ad mixtion of Kaunas the prodactsf the land could, in ten years, under a Free State constitution with the be, increased twenty or thirty per cent. Hovey makes votes at every precinct

There is nothing extravagant in the estimate that a little science scattered among the farmers, .... l. " ,r with some little improvement m habits o. management, would increase the wealth of thc State, $20,000,000 annually. The State could not, then.tnakca more judicious use cf her funds for thc increase of her material welfare, and the moral and intellectual benefits of training the mental powers of her citizens, to follow the processes of nature in her various laboratories, and to increase her beneficent products, must be as great as sharpening thc intellect to deal in soph istriesof the forum or practice the arts cmpiricisal The efforts of the Executive to force Lc- . comptonism upon thc country, caused the neglect of all beneficent and useful measures of Legislation in Congress during the last scssion. Mr. Morrill's excellent bill got . - . . . . ,- through but one reading. It .till lies upon the table of the Senate. Judge Niblack professedly anxious to enlighten thc people -never sent a cupv of this useful and im- . ... . . v. -,, porUnt bill and the interesting speech with which it was introduced, to his district, though he flooded every post office with soPhisticat and fallacious Lcconipton speeches. 1 . rThe Lccompton delegation from Indiana kept, according to report, twelve clerks signing their franks, who despatebci 120,000 copies of Lecomptou Documents to Indiana, to prepare their way for thc present cauvas. Every voter has received a surfeit of sophistical peeches, but not oac baa beard, through Niblack, of Morrill's bill, or any otber really useful or beneficent project of a law. Tbe (ranking privilege, which wai given to members of Congress for tbc distribution of valuable public documents to enlighten the people, ia perverted to tbe bases-t uses of party, and to promote personal cud. It is now employed almost entirely in circulating party falsehoods and sophistries to aid iu election schemes. If anything really valuable be sent, tbe distribution is confined to a few personal and party favorites, to thc exclusion even of tbe public libraries and asso-
ciationa for the collection and dii?scmination can candidate for Congress opened the canf knowledge. Now that Judge Niblack U vas l.iy a .ieeih ut Indianapolis on Wcdnes-

Before answering, he will probably ask time to J learn the President's will and pleasure on j the subject, and will "acquiesce" in th;it be it what it mav. The Cnri. We learn that Judges Niblack and Hovey occupied List week in the canvas of Dubois and the back part of Spencer county. J udge Niblack opened the canvas at Jasper, before the arrival of Judge Hovey while the court was setting, which secured him a good audience ; but his speech, a correspondent informs us, failed to awaken a single applause or token of approbation. Frotn Jasper Niblack went alone ou the next day to Ilaysville, but as only four or five j-ersons had assembled, be apologized and withdrew without a speech. At Huntingburgh, Judge Hovey met him, and they made speeches together at that place, Taylorville, Fuldah and other precinct?. In the discussion, wc are informed that Judge Niblack boldly declar ed that he had tct no vote, which he would not give again under the same state of facts. He has nothing to repent of, or apologise for in his past acts. He would again vote if '"tP. ' " na rultiah after the speakmg, the crowd teemed ! A Remarkable Change of Sentiment, lu February last, Mr. Calvin Fletcher was very indignant at an imputation cast upon him by the Stitt Sentinel that he had home complicity aud connexion with the new State Bank, and he occupied more than a column of that paper with an article to prove that he had uot been contaminated by, or could not be induced in any way to sanction it. upon Jehu's struggle fur a re-election in the
old Democratic banner district of Pennsylvania, strikingly applicable to Niblack,s efforts to secure a re-election in the strongest Democratic district of Indiana. Their course has been similar and their fates will be alike. The old, hard fisted Democracy, i in both districts both of which have known j no change since Democracy has had an organization will repudiate these renegades to its principles. The Prest says : Berks county, to a dead certainty, means to repudiate the renowned Jehu. We have a lively sense of the ridiculous, and, therefore, regret that we lost the rich treat, at the Court house, in Reading, on Tuesday week, when the illustrious Jelm voluateerei an oratorical defence of his impolicy and dereliction of principle beare any one had thought it worth while to question him about cither. That must have been an exhibition, after all, as melancholy as amusing. For it is a sad thing to cec a public man, thrift into a poMtion to which he bad not capacity cuough to do any thing like justice presenting himself before his incensed constituent, floundering in the mire of utter failure, and torturing his limited faculties to present ?omc thing like an f pologctic explanation of his conduct. The old philosopher said that one of the most sublime spectacles was a great man bravely struggling with unmerited misfortune. Had the Greek lived in our time, and lheld the tragic farce of Jehu Jones' self-vindicatory exhibition at Reading, he would have said, as a conclusion to his first aphorism, that about the meanest bight on earth was a trading politician, vainly enj deavoring to persuade a crowd of honest and indignant men that black was wh'te, that flnnkcyism was independence, that the wore was the better reason, that he himself, who has disappointed their hopes and betrayed their confidence, ought, therefore, again to be placed in a position where he could reeat all that they ko justly complained of. The Press consoles Jehu with a prostet of a place, when discarded by his constituent., in the kitchen of the White Ilou?c, where be tili may wear the livery of Buchanan, of which lie is so proud and ambitious. We would tu .-pest that should Jehu need an assistant, fond of the same honorable badge of service, well fitt.fl fur the wxmc duties his Leconipton co-laborer from this district will be at leisure at the time he may need his aid.
