IW See First and FonrtU Papes for tuterestlng Reading Matter. Local and Miscellaneous. EtjT The papers from all towns in the West are filled with accounts of sua strokes that occurred last week. On Friday and Satorday we heard of two fatal cases in this vicinity. ftaf Our thanks are due Messrs. Dobell 4; Conyngton for Frank Leslie's Gazette nf Fashion, Emerson's Magazine, and Yankee Notions. Messrs. Dobell St Conyngton are always prompt to get the earliest numbers f ail tle periodicals published. !" Oodry'a Rook for Septemlerf lias already been received, and is filled with the liest reading, and also with useful patterns sind designs. This last feature has made the magazine a desirable ani almost an indispensable companion of the drawing room. &' Yellow fever at New Orleans has become epidemic, and this may prove one of its most fatal ravages. The telegraph reports the total number of deaths the past week were 30G, lieing a large increase; included were HO from yellow fever. The victims were all unaccliumtcd. Cir The colored people of this city propose giving a supper on the-1 7th of August for the purpose of aiding to support the He". A. J. Hall, minister of the A. M. E. Church f this city. A committee, consisting of David Hardiman, Wm. Monroe and Davis I'ackrou have been appointed who extend a -ordiiil invitation to their white friends to lend a helping hand to their charitable endeavor. The admittance is 23 cents, including' supper. Dr. Fahnr, of this city, manufactured last y.ar a quantity of pure catnwba wine from the grapes cf his own raising. lie has given great attention to the subject of producing the best varities of grape and wine, and lie is coufident that we possess the highest advantages of soil and climate for the production of the grape, and that we will be, before many ycass, Large extorters of wine, pecimeus of his prducts can be found at the drug store of Dr. Sawyer, on Main street. 1'orcelai: Fucxt Jars. We have observed a lot of beautiful jars for preserving fruit at the crockery warehouse of J. W. Hughes, on Main street. They are of white porcelain, with a mctalic cover, closed with a spring which makc3 them air-tight, and they serve all the purposes of the solidered tin cans. They can be ojtcned and closed without trouble, as the contents arc wanted for use, and arc entirely free from th? mctalic oxides which spoil a gotui deal of fruit in tin cans. Thev can be used for a lifetime, and their neat, beautiful appearance will add a relish to the fruit." ———<>——— HONORS TO THE LAYERS OF THE TELEGRAPH CABLE.—The steam frigate Niagara is exacted to arrive at New York to-day f rom St. Johns, and it is proposed that as soon as the vessel enters the inner bay, national salutes will be fired from the Forts; also a salute of one hundred guns from the battery, besides salutes from other points. Mr. Field, Captain Hudson, and the other prominent persons connected with the expedition, will be received at the battery by the city authorities, who, with the various societies and citizens, will form in procession, and proceed to the Crystal Palace, where an address in a gold box will be presented to Mr. Field by Mayor Teiman. A similar presentation will be made to Captain Hudson. It is also arranged that on some day on the following week, a public dinner will be givcn to Mr. Field, Captain Hudson, and the officers of the Niagara, at which congratulatory messages will pass between the Mayors of New York and London. The proposition for an inter-national Jubilee in England and the United States on the passage of the first messages through the wire meets with a hearty response every where. ———<>——— THE PURCHASE OF THE HUDSON BAY COMPANY'S PROPERTY.—Sir George Simpson has given to our government a memoranda of the property of the Hudson Bay Comjianr, in Oregon and Washington, which the Company propose to sell to the United States for $1,000,000. The company has seventeen different stations within the jurisdiction of the United States, embracing valuable improvements in buildings cultivated lands, and large herds and flocks of live stock, and valuable forts and mills. At Ft. Vancouver the company claims a tract of land ten miles square in fee simple, and similar tracts at the other posts. All the places held by the company having been selected for their local advantages and their eligible positions for trade, they will be the most desirable points for towns, or for forts till the country shall be settled. The actual estimated value of the property is $2,300,000, besides the right to the free navigation of the Columbia river and other possessory rights guaranteed to them by treaty. But they are so convinced that the efforts of the compnies to secure their treaty rights and of the United States officials and setlers [sic] to re- strict them therein, would prove a source of continual strife, that they were willing to sacrifice them for a million dollars. ———<>——— pay We invite the attention of the sick . -ind alSictod, to the advertisements in our c olnmns of Dr. Eitütcrly n Iodine and carsaparilla, and GrkllcY'g Salt Rheum and Tct- , ter Ointment, Dr. Carters Cough Balsam, . 7 Tr , , wv. uiiKcra -rpcviuc, ir. iiw!-.. .--. It is announced by the last arrival from Europe that the great Comet of Charles V., which has been anxiously looked for by astronomers for two years, has at last made its appearance, and has been seen at the Paris observatory, and is pronounced by the observers to be the genuine thing. It will soon be visible to the naked eye: It is not yet known whether it will appear as it once did, like a very large and bright star, or with a tail 100 degrees in length. The curious hope that it will its "wondrous tale unfold." Its first appearance was in 1204, and its disappearance took place on the 24th of October of that year, the day on which Pope Urban IV. died, as the world thought in strange coincidence. In 1550 it re-appeared, and was observed by Paul Fabricus, astronomer to Charles who executed a map of its path, which was published in November of that year. It was then described as a great and brilliant star. Its course was "through Virgo and Bootes, past the pole of the heavens, into Cepheus and Cassiopea." The celebrated Dr. Halley calculated its elements more than a century afterwards, and several others after him. The calculations of Mr. Bomme, of Middelburg, of the Netherlands, of recent date, are more precise, and are generally supposed to be more reliable than those of his predecessors. This astronomer finally came to the conclusion that in the year 1264 its ellipse had a period of 110,644 days, or 302.922 year, expedited by planetary disturbances by 5,077 days, and that in 1856 its mean motion corresponded to a period of 308.109 years. Its present revolution he calculated would be shortened by perturbatious 10.40 year, and the comet should reach its perihelion about the 2d of August, 1858. ———<>——— L.m;E I'kokits. It is consoling to the former, because the transportation of chronometers to Europe and back will be done away with, and the many thousand troublesome observations required for the determination of longitude will be abridged. Heretofore science has not afforded means by which the coast of the United States could be delineated on a chart in comparative position with the coasts of Europe, nearer than a mile. This is one of the many practical benefits which will be realized from the completion of this great work. ———<>——— Si'icide in Maluex, JIass.
