She brought out a large lot of flour for New Orleans, all of which was re-ship-on the packet J. H. Done. The Black Hawk left on Wednesday evening, with a good trip, for Mt. Carmel. She thinks she will ply as a regular Evansville and Mt. Carmel packet as long as the river will admit. ——>THE OLD STATE BANK.—There was a meeting of the Board of the old State Bank, t Indianapolis, on Tuesday last, and the State Sentinel says it is the last that will .be ever held by the old directors. The board, it is said, will make a dividend of fifty to fixty per cent, of surplus capital. This is practical and gratifying evidence of the ability and integrity with which the business of that institution was managed. The circulation has been reduced to about ?20,000 to each of the branches. EST Ou a recent Hying trip through the counties of Spencer and "Warrick, we were gratified in beholding the fine prospects for successful corn crop. It will be much beyond the expectations of the farmers, in the f pring, who, on account of the wet weather, thought it muit prove an entire failure. The wheat crop has been gathered, and is now being thrashed. It, too, will prove the fears as to its quantity and quality to have been poorly founded. The yield may not be quite as large per acre, as in former sea eons, yet, as more ground was planted, the crop will amount, in the aggregate, to the visual number of bushels. The tobaccocrop, where the farmers have not let the weeds get the start of them, is excellent. E2?Tbe Green River Barrens, that fifty years ago in Kentucky were covered with grass and st ravr berries, morning-glories and other flowers, and were the resort of immense flocks of quail3 and a multitude of rabbits, are now a great forest of oaks, hick ory and chesnut-trecs. This great change from a geld to a forest has been made in less than half a century. The germs of the oak, the chesnut and the hickory, were in nature unless we give the great colony of squirrels the credit of planting the chesnut, the walnut, and the acorn, from their winter tore to the nuts collected in other localities. These forests are among the most beautiful of the country. The trees are nearly all of one size being from 12 to 15 inches in di ameter young and vigorous with no old dilapidated and fallen patriarchs, and no underbrush to interrupt locomotion through them or to arrest the beautiful vistas which are everywhere presented. We invite the attention of the sick and afEicted, to the advertisements in our columns of Dr. Easterly's Iodine and Sarsaparilla, and Gridley's Salt Rheum and Tet ter Ointment, Dr. Carter's Cough Balsam, Tie TtaV.r. fi Tie T,wrwr?s Fpmfllft MLS a a AV W 'VV4IlVj MS w m - ------ . BT THE C. A W. LIVE. Afternoon Report. St. Joiins, X. F. Aug. 11 m. Mr. Field telegraphs to the directors of the Atlantic Telegraph Company, that before be left London, it was decided, minnimously, that after the Queen's and lrcsidcnt'i messages t?re trausniiitit, the line will be kept f T several weeks lor the use of the electricians to enable tbem to thoroughly test the vari us modes of telegraphing, that the directors inipht decide which was the best and most rapid method. It was ruuidered that when the line was once thrown open for lusiucss, it would be difficult to obtain its dse then, for a short time for tests. - Due notice will Ik? given when it is rcadv for business. The H)hio Furnier mcnt'ons an "important discovery" in the manufartnrc of leather, by which the process t f tanning is performed in as many days as it f rmerly required months. Leather, it is known, is formed by the union of gelatin, of which the skin is chiefly tomjiosed, and tenniu, a substance found in the bark of the oak, the hemlock niul the birch, and in :i few shrub like the sumac, &c. For tanning purposes immense breadths of forest have already been destroyed, and the supply of tannin steadily decreases. Many mineral and vegetable substances have leen tried mbstitutes, but without success, and tanners are now obliged to import hemlock from a great distance at a constantly increasing cost. It has rercntlv Keen discovered, savs the 'armer, that we have growiag spontaneously in great abundance all over the country, in every State and Territory in the Union, nnd we he'.ieve all orer Europe, too, a hitherto u'uur-t worthless and very troublesome plant, but which contains an abundance of tannin." We are not informed what the plant is but the discoverer, a Mr. Johnson, is said to have ascertained its properties after many years of careful study and excriment. By the new process he tans u calf-skin in two and a half days, which formerly required from six to twelve months. The invention has been secured to the discoverer by letters-patent of United States, and measures are Liken to secure the same U Europe. Journalism is Fcttre. The New York lit raid makes the following rather boastful, egotistical production of what it expects to accomplish, which we have no doubt will be ere lonj realized : We look confidently forward to the time when the Ihrall will contain, besides its local and city intelligence nnd advertisement', nothing but a mass of faithful telegraphic reports of the events in tie whole world of the previous day, with on editorial comments thereon. This w the electric placer of journalism that wc mean to open. When this is achieved when the columns of this paper shall bring to its readers a full and faithful report of news from the whole world; when it shnll contain each morning everything worth knowing from America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, with our editorial comment there.n wn ali-ill 1jfl" itnAn ! ni Hin t ! t f t.o, .,..1., l , tue revolution m journalism vhun we bepan twenty-three .years ago, and shall pre - pare to sing our nunee dimilct demint ; for our work will be accomplished. We shall theu believe that wc have done our part, as . . 1 . t .1 V 1 problem of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable. Success and Failure. Success often seeming to be sheer luck makes the difference ltetween Alexander the coppersmith and AJexandcr the Great. Two weesago, says the "cw Ycrk Tribune, hid almost any of us who know and respect Cyrus W. Field been a.ked bv a stranger our opinion of him, the answer would have run somewhat alter 4 this fashion : A right good fellow, ccrtiinly ; but too sanguine iu fact, rather visionary. After he had made a pretty furtuue by close attention to business he . must jump into this Atlantic Telegraph enterprise, and it has used hira up. It has swamped him pecuniarily, and damaged his reputation for business tact and sagacity ; so I fear it will go hard w ith him and his large family henceforth." Everything that drifts with the tide is now chanting the praises of Mr. Field, and at the same time belittling his achievement by pretending to have always believed he would succeed. tsajrTheJew Bill, whichjiaa recently finally passed the British House of Commons, ba3 been a subject of anxious and obstinate controversy letween the hereditary and elective branches of the British Parliament, for twelve years. The bill relieves the Jews who may be elected to the House, of Commons, from the necessity of professing Christianity, or from taking an objectionable oath. The Wyandotte Cave. Our young friend Wm. Hallock, from whose rough notes we have drawn our ac-
count of the cave in Crawford county, has furnished some interesting facts which were omitted in our description of the localities in and about the cave. Upon the top of Monument Mountain, which rises 175 from the floor of the cave, stand three beautiful columns; one of the purest white marble; one of a light blue shade; and the third mottled with yellow and blue; these were formed by ceaseless drippings the water for each holding some different substance in solution that gave to each one its shade and color. Deep in the interior of the cave, the explorers picked up what was supposed to be a curiously shaped stone—some Indian implement—perhaps a stone pistol, which they brought home with them. It has since been examined by surgeons and anatomists who pronounce it to be the "humens" or the head of the arm bone, at the shoulder—a part of the skeleton of an antediluvian giant. From its size, according to the principles of comparative anatomy, it must have been the socket shoulder joint of a human monster twelve or fifteen feet high, if the Doctors are correct in their opinions. Along the bankä of Blue River, which run parallel with the principal avenues of the cave, are numerous large springs, fed probably from the subteranean rivulets running through it. One of these is <one hundred feet> in diameter, and is a curiosity almost as wonderful as the cave. Its waters are of the purest crystal, gushing up, in a volume, that form as they flow over its sides, a river sixty feet in width, and affording a water power for a large mill. Here, the gallant old pioneer of the Northwest, Gen. Harrison, built a mill—made a clearing— erected a log cabin, and planted an apple orchard, which still yields its annual crop of fruit. These improvements were made by the General when the seat of Government was at Corydon, which is but seven miles from the cave. The deceased veteran is still affectionately remembered by manv of the old settlers about Corydon. ———<>——— Tliree Robben CanghlOne in VI nfrnnfi and Two In Pctersburgh. On Saturday the Tth inst, William T. Ilannix was arrested at Vincennes, and in default of bail, was committed to jail t aw ait his trial for robbing K. B. Osbord Esq, of Pctcrsburgh, on the night previous. Ilannix is more commonly known by the name of "Charlie Worlie," or "Bill," and is supposed to be the chief of the clan in Southern Indiana. lie is the same who wrote the celebrated memorandum which was found at Wa.ba.-h last Spring, giving an account of his robberies at certain places. lie, in corcpaity with another of the gang, Henry Edwards, of rtterslurgh, followed Mr. Osbora from Terre Haute to Vinecnnes, for the purlose of robbing him of $2,000 which they knew him to have with him. Mr. Osborn understood their purpose and prepared a traf to ectch the raw als. Ilannix entered Oslorn'e 10cm and took the money ; butbefoie he had time to abscond, the guard who were watching him in the hall, closed in upon him and compelled him to disgorge. Edwards, who was out doors at the time, was also arrested ; but was released by turning State's evidence againsts Ilannix, and promised to do the .same agaiust otlur parties in wmilar transactions. On the next day, which was the Sablath. the trial commenced at Petersburgh. On the affidavit of Henry Edwards, Robert Walters was committed for robbing a store in Jasper ccunty last winter. It was stated 4 in the testimony that Walters "and one Hugh Shaw entered the store and stole the mouey and goods, while Edwards reniaiued outside to keep watch. Hugh Shaw, finding himself in a tieht corner, turns Str.te's evidence againjt Walters and one Jennings, for rolbiug the store of Messrs. Marshals and Alford a few days since. In default of bail Walters was committed on two cases, and Jennings in one. Jennings is aa Englishman, and has been known in these parts only a short time. He is said to be a bri k mason and plasterer by trade. Walters is a merchant and postmaster at the town of A I ford, two miles east of Petersburgh, ami strange to say, he received his nppoiuttneut under bond, on a charge of burglary. lie 1 was proven to In-a good Lecomptonitc ai d i ' 1 1 a SMack c:an, and no furtlicr questions j were acd. . . , .
