.august IfT Sf f Flrnt anil Fourth Pages for Interesting Reading Matter Local and Miscellaneous. Cst7Wccal! attcntiou to the advertisement of Mr. P. Kline, in another column, headed "Pftrtnchip wanted." PsjjT Tlirec yormg ladies, all daughters of citizen of Jasper, Dubois couuly, iave leccntly united themselves with the Catholic order of SfcUia of Chidtj, whose lead quarters are) in Viaccnaes. triJ-The Whitlows who shot Dr. Rodders at Portland last week, have lecii acquitted, a clear case of criminal intention on the part of Dr. Röders as to Miss Whitlow being made out. . The last novelty in female dress is announced as a new style of skirt, called the " Leviathan Crinoline." Could there te a more appropriate, name ? Dr. Grkzxk. We call attention to tbe rard of J. X. Greene, who, in withdrawing from hi. connection with Dr. Hutchinson, la no intention ot leaving the city. The Doctor has been very successful in his practicc here, and amon those who prefer the evlectie system of practice, U very popular. tjp We were pleased to sec Dr. D. D. Owen in our city ou Saturday afternoon, in more robust health than he has been for Kvcral year. lie has just returned from a visit to the Arkansas Hot Springs, from whose waters and the salubrious air of the region, he has been rejuvenated. Ax Kxtra Session. The Danville Ledger says that Lieut. Gov. Hammond, in a speech in that place a few days since, announced lhat Gov. Willard had resolved to call an extra se.ion of the Legislature about the 11th of October next. The Ledger surmises that the statement was made "by authority." Valuable Improvement. We have seen the oblations of a self revolving harrow just invented by Mr. Chafee, of Grayvillc, Illinois. . It possesses many advantages over any implement of the kind we have seen. It is light upon the team, doc. its work inost admirably, and among the-corn stalks it works to a charm. We think it more deserving the attention or farmers than any invention we have seen for some time. Its construction and mode of operation is fully set forth in the advertisement of Mr. Chafee. Business on the E. & C. R. R. seems to have revived considerably. While other roads are being stopped by unpaid employees, and interrupted by executions, our road under the present efficient managers is doing well. Within the past week the employees of the Terrc Haute & Altou road have stopped the trains because the company was not able to pay them, and the Marietta and Central Ohio roads have been obliged to give up part of their rolling stock to pay their debts. The passenger business on the Evansville & Crawfordsvillc road the past week has been unusually good, the prospect for a heavy Fall freight business was never wore encouraging. Our Fire Department. Krcry one present at the late fire on Sec ond street, must have been gratified at the promptness with which the fire companies repaired to the spot and the efficiency with which the firemen fought the flames. The men composing the Fire Department of this city are equal to any similar organization elsewhere, and with good machines, the city would be well guarded against a serious conflagration. We have four fire engines not including the two juvenile companies one of which is entirely uselcs, and two others are old and not to le relied upon. The fact that the Young America and Washington engine.? have heretofore been serviceable, is owing to the efficiency and perseverance of the companies rather than the excellence of the machines. WhAt? needed, is a thorough refitting of the department. Let the Washington, Young America and Neptune be sold or given away and furnish each of these companies with machines similar to the otic now used by the Union company. The execution of the latter company at the lift fire was universally noticed, while near by stood the Neptune, the brakes not taken down, and the company to whom the machine belonged, assisting their more fortunate brethren. Within the past ten year3 enough money has been expended in repairing the Neptune and Young America to . hare purchased three or four good machines. They should have been abandoned long since by the city. We insist upon it, that our fire companies are worthy of first class machines. Not a year passes but they are instrur .ental in saving to the city and individuals, thousands of dollars, and yet they labor under disadvantages, which would discourage men less brave and less persevering. Will the City Council not take this matterf into serious consideration? Will not our citizens sustain the Council in their co urse? If the firemen who have expressed their desire to see the Department newly equipped will morel a the matter, success is certain. ZsT We invite the attention of the sick .and aClictcd, to the advertisements in our columns of Dr. Easterly's Iodine and Saraaparilla, and Gridley's Salt Rheum and Tetter Ointment, Dr. Carter's Cough Balsam, m-. , , . . ,, - i 17T- c"e" I. j The Indianapol; ' lowing sensible comments upon the abanonmcntof the proposed Republican Conven tion at Princeton, i Wc learn, from good authority, that the proposed Contention of Republicans to be held at Princeton, on the 15th inst to consider the propriety of nominating a Rcpub- ' ttcan f?tndidfte fat Coogtcss against tolli Huvcy and Niblack, has been finally abandoned, and the whole opposition force of the District will unite on Mr. Ilovey. We J need hardly pay that we arc glad our friends I m that District have sodec.Mtrd. It is ttue Mr. Ilovey holds views in Which no HeptrbHcan fan concur, ana mat he na.s been ram er obtrusive in his declarations of fidelitV to the Cincinnati Platform, but iu his manful resistance to the extreme pro-slavery policy of the President, and iu the persecution that followed that resistance, we have Fuch an assurance of hostility to the usurpations of slavery as will make him fit to be trusted on tbitt Wisuc. If ever a new Lecompton contest comes and it may come at any time in which slavery shall demand not only the advantages of laws unjustly made to propagate it, but of its own violations of those laws, Mr. Ilovey, .we feel confident, will be found on the side of Freedom. He is demotions far more disposed to view the pretentions of slavery to extension and establishment by national laws, leniently, tuan Republicans, but we think events have so worked together for the good of Freedom that henceforth slavery can gain nothing over what she now holds without wrong and violence. And against these Mr. Ilovey would be found on the right side. It i3 true that we appear to be paining very little, and indeed asking nothing but what a sense of duty wmld compel any man of any party to giw, in petting a man who only resists wrong, violence, perjury and fraud, used to extend slavery; but the late session of Congress, the course of the payi d the records of Wm. II. English, Wm. E. Niblack, Jaincs Hughes, James M. Gregg and J. B. Foley, prove that a genuine Lecompton is ready to approve any iniquity that looks to the benefit of slavery. Wc would wager a life that the next Congress does not pass away without some new demonstration of fraud, or force by proslavery advocates, and of course the Democratic party will acquiesce. It is nothing to have, instead of a man who will acquiesce and aid ia the wrong, one who will resist it, even if he docs nothing more? This, we think, our friends will gaia in Mr. Ilovey, and therefore we think they have decided wisely in deciding to support him. If there was a reasonable hope of electing a Republican, it would be different; but as the case stands Ilovey will be a thousand times better than Niblack, and one or the other must be elected. The Dig Sell. Several of the papers that circulate in this vicinity, have re-published an account of the raising from the grave the decayed and putrid remainä of a lady, by the j-jwer of the spirits. Some simple gulls have been badly sold by it. The State Journal says of it: The whole affair was headed "L'lesgiUi," which being read backwards informs the reader that the whole affair was "a big sell." Wc spoke of it as a mere quiz, but one of rather unusual literary merit, at the time we copied it, and supposed that I hose who copied it from us would never be duped by it But the "suckers" have not all been caught yet. The other day the Louisville Democrat gravely announced that it intended to publish this story, and seriously avowed that it might "lead to an unfolding of some of nature's hitherto deeply veiled mysteries." Still more recently the State Sentinel copied it without any npiarent perception of the joke. For "a sell" that oerdy announced that it w a "sell," and nothing else, we think this story ha been more widely accepted as a truth, or at least a genuine narrative, than any since the u Moon hoax."
