I will give the above reward for the detection of the thief who stole the Volk bolt newspaper from the doors of the subscribers on Main St. on yesterday morning. P. SCHMUCK. fc2The Cumberland Presbyterian Sunday School will meet at the Neptune Engiue Hall, on Second St, between Main and Locust EL, on to-morror, at the usual honn and thereafter until the church ia repaired. JtnJTTherc has been a great cry for work in our sister cities. There is no scarcity of it here. Messrs. A.nspaciiek Si Tlact advertise to-day for seamstresses and tailors. Their storeroom can be found on north tide of First street, between Main and Sycamore Robt. S. Rcstox h.uj opened a large feed store under the telegraph office. lie has wade arrangements fur keeping constantly on hand a large stock of feed of every variety, and is prepared to fill all orders promptly and cheaply. Give him a cull. CSjnie fimpleton, writing to the Indianapolis Given, saya he will not vote for Torter, because he supported the magnifiveut hnmbug John C. Fremont. Vet he would have supported John P. Defrccs for Ihe same reason we presume. ESP The Administration is sorely troubled, ?ays a Washington letter writer, to find a proper person to earn thc $10,000 appropriated for the special mLuion to Paraguay, lie is required to .peak Spani.-h, and jierhaps may have occasion to walk inLb. J&Qjfyi. L. Johnson has sold out his jcriwliral and stationery establishment to T WniTTAKEit. Mr. Whittitkcr ia an agreeable and accommodating gentleman, and will te (leaded to attend to all customers who may want anything in his line. He pledges himself to keep a complete assortment of all grades and varieties of stationery, as well us all thc periodical liitraturc of thc day. ZHr Whilst our government official denied the Press the pririlege of sending re1'ortcra on board thc Niagara, the Engliah govermuent, with a praise worthy magnanimity, not only allowed reporters berths on tbe Agamemnon but a reporter of thc London Time, a bitter opponent of the present ministry. When will our officials learn euch courtesy. There is true, genuine feeling in thc following Ethiopian compliment to woman : "Dey maj mil agin women as much a dey like, but dey can't set me agin 'em. I hab always in my life found dem to be fust in lub, fust in de ice-cream ttaloon, und the fust, best, and last in the sick room. What would we poor debils do widout 'em ? Let w be born as young, as ugly, nnd as helpless as we please, and a woman's arm urn open to receive us. She it am who gubs us uur fust doac of castor oil, and puts tlo.e 'lon our helplessly naked limbs, and cubbcrs up our foots and toeses in long flannel petticoats ; nnd it am she, as wc grow up, who fills our dinner baskets wid doughnuts and spplcs as we start to school, and licks us when wc tears our trowsers." Bthm'i Commercial College We have received a very neat pamphlet, the Fifth Annual Catalogue of Behm's Commercial College, in this city. It contains nn excellent essay upon thc great advanta ges of a thorough knowledge of Book-Keeping to persons in every pursuit in life, in which accounts of any kind are to be kept. To thc fanner and mechanic it is a department of knowledge relatively as important, as to the merchant. There is no person in thc active walks of life, who would not be Mrell repaid for devoting six or eight weeks and $30 to obtain a knowledge of the art of Book-Keeping, as taught by Mr. Behm. The habit of keeping systematic accounts even on the smallest farm and in thc household, is worth to a young man, or even a young lady, ten times the cost in money and time to acquire a knowledge of the correct mode of doing it. We observe that Mr. Behm has had applications from Ladies, to lccome pupils, and he proposes the next session to take a number of female scholars. In Philadelphia, some of the best bookkeepers and accountants in the" retail houses re females. There is no good reasons why employment for them in thi3 pursuit should not be extended. A wife who had a knowledge of book-keeping, might give valuable aid to a husband in the retail trade, or a mechanic, whose n flairs were too limited to inploy i clerk. Jn their own line of business as shop keepers milliners mantau makers, 4c. ic, an acquaintance with bookkeeping is essential to them. It might not be so graceful and charming an accomplishment as the art of playing on thc piano, but it would require lcs time and money, and would make its possessor as valuable and esteemed, if not as fascinating a wife. This Institution deserves the fostering care of our citizens, for it is equal to any one in the West for the thorough education it imparts to its pupils. JCy Wc invite thc attention of the sick And Afflicted, to thc advertisements in our columns of Dr. Easterly's Iodine and Sart anarilla, and Gridley's Salt Rheum and Tetter Ointment, Dr. Carter's Cough Balsam, Dr. Baker's Specific, Dr. Hooper's Female Cordial, and Dr. Easterly's Fever and Ague t. !? rwy i iviuer. a nrac meoacmes arc prepared oy a thoroughly educated Physician, Chemist and Pharmaceutist, 60 that all can rely upon them as being safe and effectual in curing thc diseases for which they are recommended. Tk Atlautlc Cable. Xew York, Aug. C. m. The Jft-rafJ publishes a special despatch announcing thc arrival of the Agamemnon at Valentia Day. She may have arrived, but nothing certain is kuown yet. Thc truth of the Herald's despatch is doubted, as by previous arrangement only signals were allowed to pass be. een thc Niagara and the Agamemnon m.til both reach the shore. No news from the latter will be received until the lauds at Valentia. New York, August 6 M. The Atlantic telegraph cable has produced an unexampled excitement. Thc telegraph offices are to be illuminated to-monow night. Ihe event has produced universal a;itu, laeticn. At Quebec, Montreal and the Provinces generally, the union with the mother ccurtty was received with great enthusiasm. At Worcester cheers were giren and a talute of 100 guns is to be fired on to-morrow. Ia Baltimore the news of the laying of thc cable produced intense interest. There is great anxiety expressed to hear further news. From LoulsYille. Louisville, Aug. 5 r. t. The publication of thc dispatch from Trinity Pay, that an electric current had been established across the Atlantic, struck our peoplo like a clap of thunder out of a clear sky ; in view of thc previous experiments, they had concluded the laying of the Atlantic cable an inijiossibility. The people are now in a fever of excitement for a few words from thc other side of the ocean. ColcmcuS, 0., Aug 5 p. JX. Great rejoicing at thc safe landing of thc cable. Thc telegraph oflice is illuminated. Thc news from Trinity Hay was at first considered a hoax, but is generally credited a3 authentic. There is great rejoicing in private but no public expression. PUILADELPUIA, Aug. 5 P. Ä. The laying of thc telegraphic cable, caused great rejoicing here, though some still doabt thc success of the enterprise. At Harrisburg, the old State Honse bell, the depot and factory bells were rung iu rejoicing. Detroit, Aug. 5 p. st. There is great rejoicing here at the successful result of the Atlantic Telegraph enterprise. Thc telegraph oflice at this place is brilliantly illuminated. Cincinnati, Aug. 5 p. m. There was great excitement on change on the announcement of the success of thc Atlantic Telegraph Cable. Business for some time was suspended. Cuicago, Aug. 0 p. M. One hundred guns are now firing in honor of the successful landing of thc Telegraph cable. WlIKtll.VO, Aug. 5 p. M. The ieijdc are rejoicing, but sonic 'arc still incredulous. From Maysvllle. Trustees meet to examine certain charges that have been preferred by Dr. Murphy against President Daily. Whether he will be proved guilty of immoral conduct we cannot tell, but the charge of plagiarism will be fastened upon him, beyond the possibility of escape. He has published, a3 his own, not only a few sentences or it few thoughts belonging to another, but a whole sermon. So far as we have examined Dr. Daily's address, it does not contain a half dozen ideas that were not taken directly and bodily from Foster's Essay upon decision of character. Thc disgrace of his conduct does not attach to hinbself alone. It is reflected upon the college of which ha b President and open tbe Trustees who sustain his course. He has by his Plagiarism confessed his own incompetency for the position he holds, and he owes it to himself and college to resign its Presidency. Thc friends of Dr. Daily and himself, have denied thc charge of Plagiarism in this particular instance, and thU exposure proves, not only the ignorance of his friends, who perhaps neTer investigated the subject, but the Doctor's want of principle in endeavoring to sustain his reputation by such dishonorable mean3. The friends of Dr. Daily have left no means untried to bolster him up in his imptldcut pretensions to achoiurship aud ability, and those who hare doubted cither, have been accused of a sectarian spirit. Hitherto we have said nothing against Dr. Daily as a man or as a scholar, but thc fact that he has published as his own the thoughts, words and conceptions of another, renders him, in our judgment, unfit to preside over a State University, where the President should have a character, not only for honesty and uprightness, but a reputation for learning and ability. The papers tell us that a Professor in a Western College was recently detected in a like wholesale Plaigiarisr in an address delivered before a literary society. II Ianiediatcly resigned his chair, and the :u count says retired to die of mortification and chagrin The Doctor's conduct since these charges were made against him convinces us that he will do neither, as he is determined to keep his chair until ousted therefrom by the Board of Trustees, and his delicacy of feeling was long since destroyed by the repeated charges of Plagiarism made agaiiiit him by the prcs, and hitherto strcutiouslv denied.
