-. M g IM III! Tla CUvdand Railroad Convention. A hrg cenventioa of the representative of Western railroad companies was held at Cleveland, on Tuesday, to take into considerition the action of the managers of the - New York and Erie Railroad, in reducing passenger fares, in violation of the Giereland agreement. After fully canvassing the matter, in connection with the causes which led to the reduction, it was unanimously resolved to put r,.. v. . l : . u . : i r k. Pl...
U UikC lilt WIIVKUIU AI llViC Ul IU VH. V. land agreement. The effect of this action m to decline all passenger and freight relations with the Erie road, to make a reduction oa through tickets of three dollars from U points West to New York. This reduction is pro-rated ofT the proportions as now received by the several roads. There is also to be a reduction of one dollar per ton in freights. This arrangement is to take effect oa Monday. Under this agreement, the Western roads .- will refuse to receive tickets from the Erie ; Toad, or to sell tickets over that road; or to bill freights in connection with the Erie road, thu3 effectively cutting off the latter from all connection with the Wett. It is doubtful whether this arrangement ,. can be carried out, but should the movement succeed, the Erie managers will find themselves in a tight place. In any event, a fierce railroad war may be cipected, and its progress will be watched with interest by the holders of railroad securities, and aLo by the public at large. The Cost ot Collecting Revenues. the Federal . The Richmond' Whig, in a recent article, bhows what becomes of a small portion ot the money wasted by the Federal Government in the following ßummary: . At Niagara 19 men are employed at an expense of $12,000 to collect $8,000; at ; Oswego 23 men at $18,000 to collect $6,000; at Buffalo 23 men at $17,000 to collect $10,006; at Burlington 33 men at $16,000 to collect $3,500; at Wiscasset 8 wen at $7,000 to collect $130; at Portsmouth 21 niea at S11,0G0 to collect $5,500; at Marblehcad 9 men at $2,200 to collect $230; at N'cw Bedford H men at $7,500 to collect $4,800; at Perth Amboy 13 men at S 1,500 to collect $1,500; at Ocracoke 7 men at $2,000 to collect $82 ; at Toledo 7 men at $4,400 to collect $567; at Detroit 10 men at $36,000 to collect $485 ; at Bcuecia, 3 men at $4,400 to collect $2,300 ; at Stockton 1 man at $3,100 to collect $143; at Sacramento 1 man at $3,600 to collect $402 ; at Saa Diego 4 men at $7,600 to collect $30; at Monterey 3 men at $7,050 to collect $45; at San Pedro 6 men at $4,200 to collect $301. The sums are not properly the costs of collecting the amounts of revenue at these various points, but for watching to prevent smuggling. Remakkable Instance or Affection. On Saturday, the 10th inst., an infant of M. C. Green, in Culpepper county, Ya., died; and . on the next day, Jennie, her colored nurse, . -1 4 years old, expired. The very existence of the nurse, says the Blue Ridge Republican, seemed bound up in that of the child. . She never left her from the time she was taken sick, until the' moment of her death, and in twenty-four hours alter they lay under the same roof, child and nurse, silent . slcenera in their coffin lied. From the mo ment the child breathed its last, she seemed to loose all interest in things around her, even her identity itself, and remained in a kind of trance up to the hour of her death. When asked if she was willing to die, she said: " es, I have seen that child in the Savior's arms, and I want to go too."' Places of Worship.
