EVANSVILLE, IMP. WXt)SESDAT MORNIXQ. JULY 28
An Extiltardlnary Fact Mr. Joseph Fotts, an iatelligcnt miner, at work, on Monday, in his room, in the Bodiim mines, 300 feet below the surface of the earth, had thrown down, by a blast, a large mass of coal, and was engaged in breaking it tip to fill into hia car, when from the bod v of It, through one of the fractures, leaped out a living frog, beautifully formed and active, about the seize of one's fwo fingers. This extraordinary curiosity, wc hare now before ua, pert and active as a youth of his tpeciccs six months old ; yet, as we hold him in our hands, we bend in reverence and almost in awe before this venerable patriarch; this almost first animal existence of creative power. What unnumbered cycles of time have rolled away since he first had form and being. The mountains and the hills, and the deep 6 1 rata of rocks that form their ribs have grown by the blow process of nature, over his prison house, bince he was incarcerated. The valley of the Mississippi has emerged from the ocean since bis limbs were formed and had their proportions ; and if, as geologists calculate, it has required six millions of years to form the delta of the Mississippi below the bluffs of Natchez, what must be the age of this pettit animal, now ia our feeble grasp. Can it be possible that his existence extends back through the eternity of twelve millions of years; and yet if there be truth in the speculations of Agasf iz, he is older than that. What a creature of an instant was Methuselah compared with this frail creature ; what an ephemera is the oldest patriarch of the forests, whose limbs have been shaken by th storms of a thousand years, when ita age is counted with that of this little prisoner, who came into the -wjrid-when perhaps the sun was young and the stars had just come forth in the heavens, and the planets beyond our ephere were in chaos, or their substances were gathering into nebulous clouds. Do we hold in our hands the oldest animal in existence on the face of the earth ? It must be so. There may be others still imprisoned, as venerable ; but none can claim a remoter origin. How came he in his deep buried cell? According to all received theories, the formation of coal was prior to all animal life. He must have been born when the substances of coal were in a fluid state, and he suck into it before it became a solid, and his tomb was hermetically scaled by the processes of its formation. Had he a progenitor ? or is he an original creation ? He is beautifully shaped, and diners from the species of our day only in longer claws to his feet, which are without webs, leaving to infer that be was not intended tor a good swimmer. What an immortality has the vital principle that has lain dormant fröm the first ages of the world in the body of this little animal. If life can last for millions of years in this frail body, can one doubt the living principle of the soul, and its immortality ? Here arc, in the history of a mean reptile, themes for many a sermon ; and wc advise all to visit it, and contemplate it, and ' draw the inspiration which so humble a subject affords, and which brings us so im mediately into the presence of creative power. Over the vein of coal in which this little animal lay imbedded, arc two other strata of coal, separated by solid wind stone of 100 feet in thickness from the bottom one, and by 50 feet of like rock between each other. Between the scam, from which the frog came, and the surface, there are two hundred fect of solid sand stone and coal, and about 40 feet of coal, slate and com noia clay. These arc all regular stratifica tions, that must have required ages bey end the power of human comprehension to com pute, to have formed . them. Below them all, comes forth a living, breathing, sensitive animal, clothed in flesh, with all the organ of his species perfect, that h;ut its existence before the slow processes of their formation began. ta?-Thc Citizens' Bank of Tennessee turns out to have been gotten up ly certain men of property who had gained a reput.vtion for honor and integrity, which they did not deserve and used by them as a regular wild cat, swindling' establishment. The circulation U reported at $400,000, all o which, nearly, will be lost to the public, and the amount of which, the manager have gotten into their own pocket?. The flfT.HT has aroused strong popular iu1ign ticn at Memphis, and the swindlers arc in danger of falling into the hands of Judge Lynch. The papers of that city are niak ing appeals like the following, to the people to bring the swindlers ti justice. It ap scan that the President cf the State Banh was th prisr'pil oncr in the lurstcd bank: 'Sav by your action to public robbers on a large scale, you are no better than the small thief whom" we spurn from our door. The managers of this bank have ikfiau.lct! the people will the jopIe now ki tn hand. that have m severely smote them I think an enlightened judgment will die tnie a sufficiently riirid course, aud that th banking swindlers will meet the frowns of verv virtuou.? citizen. The Managers of the Littl! Kock Slate Cumjtany were denwwed, arrested, tried, and viülied in very possible way, wlurn they only robbed on a trinir." ccale. In what respect do the managers of the Citizens' Bank differ frun the poor Trues, except in raaguitude? And yet some of the same Thirties arc cow' managers of the branch of tie. DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION. From 1,200 to l00 Prrtont in Council Great En tMiatm The Tielrt Acceptable to all Afti-Leeomp-ton Voter lercnptonitn Trembling in their Shoe Jwdga Horry Emdorted II U Speech X Mack and Shoemaker Repudiated , Ac, d-e. Rockpokt, Ind., July 20th, 1833. Editor Journal : Dear Sir: Saturday, the 24th inst., was a glorious day for Democracy aud freedom, in old Spencer. The day was bright and clear and the air invigorating. Providence seems to be on the side of right. The dust was laid thejday previous, by gentle showers, and the genial sunshine on Saturday brought crowds of men and lovely women to the Convention. Never had the village of Centerville, witnessed such a large and enthusiastic Convention, and its inhabitants were completely bewildered as delegation after delegation of the invincible cohortsof freedom, poured along their streets. Music and banners and enthusiastic cheering enlivened the morning. By 11 o'clock A. M., there were between 1,200 and 1,500 voters on the ground; all animated by one common impulse of hatred to Lecomptoniem and tyranny. The popular indication is aroused against a tyrannical and faithless administration, and all the lift of the hired tools of oppression and their subsidized press, in the First District, to the contrary, can do nothing to allay, or prevent, the deep settled hostility of the honest masses, against those faithless rulers who have violated every principle of honor and honesty, in order to fasten an odious Constitution upon a free people. The Convention was organized at 1 o'clock A. M.by the appointment of R. S. licks, as President, and G. R. Morgan, Sec ret iry. Every township in the county was represented. A committee of one from each township was selected to draft rules for the govern ment of the Convention. The report of the committee was unanimously accepted by the meeting. The several township del egations retired for consultation and to ap point one of their number to cast the vote of the township. The persons thus selected retired and selected by ballot, the following ticket : Rtprtu n tn the C alvin Jones. Treat urer Joux Y. IicH.vnn.-ON. Sheriff JciTS A. Stockino. Surveyor Willfob AVells. Cmm issioner M ich a el a n n er. Coroner Oliver R. Bkowk. A mo.t excellent ticket, and one that will carry three-fourths of all the voters of Spcn cer county. These men have never been anything but Democrats all their lives, firm, consistant, and reliable, voting the uimratch td ticket, and so devoted to Democracy that their honest hearts revolt at the bare idea of endorsing the rascally and villainous policy of the Administration and its bought vp minions, on the Kansas question. A thou sand sturdy and couola'tnt Democrats tdand ready to Lack up this ticket, as well as at least eight hundred, of the honest opponents of Democracy, old line Whigs, Republican?, and American., who vote with us in order to vindicate the great principles of lfgovcrnmcnt, that has been wilfully and shamelessly violated. The ticket as reported by the nominating committee, met with a unanimous endorsement at the hands cf the vast multitude, (save one single voire). A committee on resolutions was appointed, who reported a platform, endorsing popular sovereignty in its broadit sense the Cincinnati riatforra Kunsas-Xehraska act Judge Douglas, and John G. Davis, for their integrity, and devotion to principle-1, Hon. A. P. Hovey, aud pledging to him our earnest efforts to rccurc his election, and recommending James J. Cavin, Esq, of Rockport, a a suitable Democratic, candidate for State Senator in this district. The committee further reported resolutions, that met the earnest approval of the convention, denouncing tbo Kansas policy of the Administration; opposition to Hon. Jcse D. Bright', view of Democracy, as expressed in his recent extraordinary speech; against Hon. Wm. K. Xiblack, because of his persistent efforts to fasten the LecMnpton constitution upen the people of Kansas nguiust their earnest ajieal at the ballot lxx and elsewhere, and for favoring the English swindle; against John C Shoemaker, for leing a two-fiictil Juan, and a falsifier of facts ; and against the proposed scheme of Ilright, Hughes, i Co., to Uike back the Wabash and Eiie Canal, whereby they want to fill their own bottomless pockets, and taddfe.nn additional debt, of $3,000,000 or $10,000.(J00, upon the already iru.-hcd tax payers of Indiana. A nnmlur of I.ecomptoialeP, who bad axes to grind at Washington, r who had had their axes ground there, were ujon the ground till day cudeavoiiiig by fair iiican? to !tir up n fas between the anti-Lccompton Democrats and the Republicans and Ameri can. Thank God, they did net succeed. Their bare-faced measures were discovered and exposed by ail p&triot. The contemptable puppiff rhnok in their shoes like a nigger with the tvj'te. They saw their djom written in Ihe honest itidiguatnu of fivemen. At ttliuut two o'clock, Judge Hovey stepiK.-d iihii the rostrum, and for two hours held that va.-t concourse of people spellbound, with his cogent reasoning, and burn ing invf the against the Lccoinptoti fraud. and its offspring the 44 English villainy." He held up t the scorn and detestation of every honest man, the course pursued by Bright and his coadjutors, too's of a faith breaking administration, in their crusade against Democracy and. self-government. He reviewed the whole Kansas ttucstionand backed up every statement by documentary proof of the most reliable kind. His ex pose of tbc .corruption and fraud practiced upon the people of Kansas, by men calling themselves Democrats, for the avowed purpose of makiug a tim e Slate sank de?i into the hearts of the audience..'. Many a wavering mind that liad been niLdcd, by Lccompton lies, was brought l-ack to the pure foun
to do Judge Hovey justice. My pen is line-1

Xo candid man can say that Judge Hnvev will rairv thi count V bv leSi than i ..... t. 1,000 to 1,200 majority Save a fight, in- I stigated doubtless, by Lcconiptouitcs to disturb Judge Hovey, while speaking, every thing passed off most gloriously and the utmost harmony and good feeling prevailed. As much so at least as in any other convention of its magnitude. In conclusion, I send greeting to the ster ling popular tortreirjhty Democracy of the district, and say to them, that we of Spencer will not fail to do our whole duty, nor shall we be a.hanicd of our majority in Oc tober. Cod and Lilertv ! AX OLD DEMOCRAT. Colo Stcptoe' Defemt. In a private letter to a friend in Rich mond, Va., Col. Steptoe gives the following account of his battle with the Oregon Indians, and his defeat and retreat. "I left this tbrt (Walla-Walla) on the 13th, with the command mentioned alove, (125 men) to visit Colville, a white settlement near the British line, and about two hundred miles distant. The object of my visit was to talk with the white jeoplc and the Indians, and to try to effect a more harmonious intercourse lietween them. Two deep, ptrong rivers the Sntke and the Spokane had to be crossed. . I succeeded in crossing the first with great difficulty, and when near the other, found myself in the presence of more than a thousand Indians, all armed, painted and - highly excited. They demanded whether we came to attack them. I answered that we were friends to all who were friendly, and did not wish to fight if it could be avoided. They expressed themselves satisfied, but posted themselves on the summits of three hills, around the basis of which our road wound. "Never suse':ting treachery, I was on the point of entering the detile, when a mere accident excited my suspicion, and 1 turned aside. There is no doubt in my mind now, that if wc had gone on, not one would have lived to see the morrow. I halted and encamped, but "the baffled -savages glared ujn us, hesitating to attack, and wc remained thus in a half hostile attitude till near sunset. The merest trifle would have leen sufficient to precipitate either party upon the other. - 0 "The next morning I resumed the march, but had only gone two or three miles, when the Indians attacked the rear guard, and immediately the tight btcaine general. We labored under the disadvantage of having to fight while moving on, and in the midist of a country of successive hills peculiarly favorable to the enemy. My force was well mounted, but composed chiefly ot troops who had never liecii under tire. About 12 o'clock the commander of one company fell, and the Indians charging fiercely upon his men, they gave way and could not le rallied. Soon after, another company's commander fell, and sonic of the bravest petty officers in the command were sevcrelv wounded. I determined, therefore, to take a position and halt. The fight continued without intermission until a short time be fore sunset, when the enemy posted themselves all around us to wait lor the night and for reinforcements. We krew that two or three hundred more would join them teforc morning; our ammunition was nearly exhausted, our loss in killed and wounded very considerable. It was evident that we could not fi;ht another dav. " These considerations determined meto make a forced march and get possession of the canoes in which we had crossed Snake river before the enemy could doso. Painful as thejstep was, I saw there was no other n!ternativc. Wc could not remain where we were, and a slow march would lc fully as disastrous; for, if the enemy seized upon the canoes, our situation would be worse than ever. For these reasons I put the command in motion about 10 o'clock at night, and did not stop until we reached the river, nearly 00 miles off. A shex kinj: affair occurred on Friday in the town of Calais,Vermont. A young man about eighteen years of age, named Ariel Martin, took hü ritfc in the morninj, went into a neighboring hayincr field, put hiin.self in ambush, and as Mr. Whcelotk, the OMcner, rcaie his appearance to commence work, shot Lim deliberately tlxrouh the heart, Mr. WLecIOCS tCll at OnCO, and in about five minutes breathed his lat.
