The annual examination of the Delany Academy at Xewburgh will bo held on Tuesday aud "Wednesday next The address will be delivered on Wednesday evening by the Ker. Mr. Burrows of this city. The Institution is in a flourishing condition, and the Trustees have just completed a new and commodious school edifice. X3?We publish, this morning, on our fourth page, a list of our different Christian denominations, with their times and places of meeting. Doubtless, there are come mistakes, as we ' were compelled to make up the list as we could gather it, and we shall be pleased, if any one finding an error, will notify us of it, in order that we may have it rectified. ttJThe gas company of Pittsburg have reduced the price of gas to consumers in that city to one dollar and fifty cents per thousand feet, the reduction having taken effect on the 1st inst, . At this price gas can be made the cheapest fuel for heating rooms and cooking, and will, in time, when houses and culinary utensils are fitted for its use, supercede, in a good degree, all other fuel for domestic ae. A ScrrosED Scicidk. A lady who had been in domestic trouble for some time, left her boarding house, in Vinccnnes, on Tuesday evening last, remarking to sonic of the inmates as she went out, that she would oon settle all her difficulties." She was last seen in the evening, on the railroad bridge over the Wabash. It is supposed she threw herself into the river and was drowned. - tgWe notice, through the letters of "Occasional," the Washington correspondent of the Philadelphia Press, that the Administration circles are considerably exercised on account of the enthusiasm with which Senator Douglas has been received in Illinois, lie also says that Col. Thoma3 L. . Harris, u the heroic defender of popular sovereignty in the Springfield District, " stands a good chance of being returned. Mr. Ilarris evidently has more life in him than was anticipated. It was .reported, several times list winter, that he was in the last stages of consumption, yet now we have him going through all the fatigue of a political .campaign. - - - M Occasional " say?, of the pro'pect in Pennsylvania: Great joy has been excited in official circles here by the announcement, in the last Hamsburjr I mow, Colonel Jialdeman 3 pa per, that every Lecompton Democrat in Pennsylvania is certain of being re-nomin ated. The office holders here care very little whether the whole of the county tickets in Pennsylvania are borne down by these un fortunate nominations, only so that the pol icy of the Administration in reference to Kansas is endorsed. This is as it should be. e wiäh every jnan in the last Congress who voted either for or against the Lecompton Constitution ,or tb still more abominle English compromise would be renominated by their respective friends. We would like to see the question fairly and squarely placed before the American people in order that they may give a verdict which will bear no two con nt ructions. In this State most, if not all, of the mt rubers cf the last Congress, who Toted against the fraud, are candidates for re-elec tion with good prospects of success. On the other hand, the probability is that two, out of the four Lecomptonites from Jhis State will be re-nominated. Poor Foley, has been turned loose," and 3Ir. Gregg, will also be set aside. . S6?We invite the attention of the sick and afflicted, to the advertisements in our columns of Dr. Easterly Iodine and SarsapariHa, and Gridley's Salt Bheum and Tetter Ointment, Dr. Carter's Cough Balsam, Dr. Baker's Specific, Dr. Hooper's Female Cordial, and Dr. Easterly's Fever and Ague Killer. These medicines are prepared by a thoroughly educated Physician, Chemist and FhanBarcntkt, so. that all can rely upon them as being safe and effectual in curing the diseases for which they are recommended. They are standard remedies, and can be found b nearly every Drug and Apothecary store to the United States.

On Thursday night we had one of the severest rains experiened this summer. It fairly came down in torrents. The side walk in front of our office caved in, and a portion of, the culvert on Division street fared the same fate. The weather was cloudy and damp all day yesterday, with heavy indications of more rain. A. large quantity of tobacco is now strung out on our wharf ready for shipment, and considerable flour. Much more activity is manifested th-iu could be expected. We must be some better off as regards business than most of our sister cities. . . But few boats have landed in the list 24 hours. The little Alida came up in the afternoon, and the Trader came down in the fort noon. The Trader had quite a load of tobacco on board, but we were not favored with a manifest. The St. Louis RrpubUccm gives ui tbe following as the news at that point: "The river here swelled about threel.-M.bes on Tuesday night; became stationary yesterday morning, and remained so all day. It will doubtless be falling slowly to-day. The last arrival from Missouri river reports tbe river falling at St, Joseph and for a considerable distance down. The heavy rains lately prevaleut up that river have ceased. A good deal of drift continued to float past the city yesterday, and boats from below experienced much inconvenience from it, breaking their -wheel, Ac The weather, was very hot yesterday, and on the Lcvcc bu-'incss was dull. . ' ' The same paper says that the crops in Minncwta promise an abundant vield, likewise iu the northern poit'on of Whtconiin; but from Dubuque to Keokuk, the wheat crop has been nearly destroyed by tbe heavy rains that have fallen almost daily for the last week or ten days. The tri-weckly mail contract between St. Louis and Memphis has been given to Messrs. Hancock & Ball. They arc to carry tbe mail one year for $39,750. The steamer Greenville left yesterday evening for Green river. The Louisville papers report the river falling at that point, with scant 6 feet in the canal and 4 feet in the pass. ' The stenmer Bowling Green has been tboroughlyjrcpaired at Ixuisville and was to have left that city for Green river on Thursday evening. The Scioto, No. 2, is the regular packet for Louisville, this evening. The Scioto is a never-failing boat, and we trust the may secure a good trip. A negro lelonging to the estate of A. C. Starke, in Shelby county, Tenn recently met bis death from the fiendish punishment of W. S. MoiltjHl ery, tbe overseer. The ofTence committed by the deceased waj a temporary absencu from labor, and the punishment administered was a series of severe whipping unexampled, nlmoft, in the catalogue of cruelty. One witness stated that the first punishment consisted of ftVe hundred rlripe. and that the dirceascd was subjected to that character of piinishincut every day for a period of ten dava. This cruelty wan indulged against the wi.-h of Mrs. Starke, the owner of the riave, and seemed to be Mtnply in accordance with the fiendish taste of the overseer. Death or W. T. Porter. Wm. T. Porter,, of Porter' Spirit cf. the Timet, died in New York on Monday. He was editor, of the "old Spirit" for a quarter of a century, and was one of the best informed men, in the'country. Mr." Porter was a native' of Ycrmonfc, and belonged to a family of five brothers, all of, whom were brillant writers and wits.. They have all. fallen .into the sleep that knows no -waking. Mr. Porter was a practical printer, and received hia education in a printing office. He went to New York about thirty years ago, and was employed as foreman in a printing office, where he had the opportunity of giving a rerdant young man from Vermont, who afterwards proved to be the famous Horace Greeley, his first employment in New York as a type setter. There has ever since existed a Tcry friendly' regard between the two compositors, both of whom have risen to fame. .... Soon after his arrival in New York, Mr.
Porter7 attention was directed to field sport j in their several varieties, and he saw the "necessity of a journal directed to their interests, and of an organ especially devoted to the turf. He thereupon founded what was long known in New York, as the tri of the Timet, a paper devoted not only to the sports of the- turfj but to every out-door manly exert ie, including hunting, fishing, with all their kindred excitements. This journal at once attracted the attention of men throughout the country engaged in raiding thorough-bred stock. It gave an impetus to the interest felt in fleet horses never before known, and the editorial rooms of the proprietor in consequence became the favorite resort of leading gentlemen throughout the country whenever they visited New York during the racing season. In the settlement of disputed points between sporting men, Mr. Porlcrs opinion was confidently referred to by disputants, on cither side, and bis judgment on all controverted points of that character was quietly acquiesced in as conclusive. Up to the time of his death, he Lad probably decided more questions involving money between sporting men than any other person, and his fiat once given was considered without appeal; His paper acquired among all sympathisers with the subject upon which it treated, a very general popularity. Mr. Porter was remarkable for the amiability of his temper and the kindness of his heart. w He seemed to live without an enemy, and at tbe time of his death he was probably the best known of any man in Xew York who had .never filled an official station. Re-election of Lecomptonites to Congress. The following appeal of Col. Forney, of the Philadelphia Prctt, against the re-election of the Lecompton members of Congress in Pennsylvania, is a cogent protest against the re-election of Niblack in this district CoL Forney was the confidant and bosom friend of Mr. Buchanan, before he betrayed the Democratic principles on which be wa elected, and reduced to Lecomptonifm by southern nullifiera : - The u men, aays the Ptctt, " who forced Lecompton through Congress the men who insulted the public sentiment the men who denounced tbe pledges of. 1856, who applauded the proscription of the champions, tried aud true, of that principle: there men now rail upon the mattet ff the Xorthtrn Democracy to re-tied them to the next Congrt ts, and that to teal, ly a popular decree, the yravett act of political turpitude and treachery to be found in political annalt ! Uut in the name of a great iirty, we say-'Xo! to tbe demand. .We assert that enough lias been lost for this dishonoring example. We declare that a sufficiency of sacrifice has been made in the name of a despotic doctrine. W insist that those who have attempted and who have failed in the attempt, to commit the Democratic party to this doctrine, should stand back and allow other men men . trusted aud - tried, who know the wishes of the coplc and respect them too to take the . nominations for the national councils ; for if this is not done, hundreds of innocent Democrats must fall in the effort to elevate the guilty, In this State, Every Democratic member of Congress but three has demoralized himself by voting for Lecompton is m in one or another of its fhatueless disguises. We '- ask,' in all candor, whether these men are to be put Ujion lX-mocratic tickets, like so many dead weights, to carry down others upon those tkkvts who had nothing to do with the sacrifice and the surrender ?. u For here is the practical question after all. Lccomptonism is not a virtue, but a lie it is not a principle, but a heresy it is not even a decent expedient, but an incarnate and festering corruption. It has' uo vitality in it, like the principle of the Kansas and Nebraska uct, by its elasticity aud power, shortly after rescued those who had stood bv it, and restored the Dcinocrarv to the iower which tl-ev had temporarily lot.?' . A Lacuhable Sell. An Eastern manager, having closed his theatre for the warm weather, concluded to take his family to the sea shore. After the determination was formed they Kicked up and departed in the confusion and ha.-te that usually attends such excursion:. A waggish friend called at Ihe house immediately after their departure, and discovered that a valuable gold watch and chaiu had 1xn left behind on the parlor table, in the hurry of dejKirtnre. This was I lie manager's own watch, aud, without further mlo, the tarefnl caller put it into his own pocket, und conveyed it and himself down to the very watering place wlicre his friends had already proceeded. Comiiiunicating what had 1 aj-ened toatcw mugenial .pirits, friends of both partio, the watch tinder made out tlie programme of a delightful little plot of the ileat-riptioii usually known as a "sell." Intimation was courteously given to the manager, who m a thorough gentleman as well us an excellent artist, that a number ot his friends and admirers desired to see him, and a hint waj dropped that a little presentation was on the tapit. Accordingly, the managet and his friends did meet, and one of. Ihe party, "a fellow of infinite jest and humor," improved the occasion by making a neat and hfghly complimentary fecch, iu which the private and professional worth of the manager were handsomely mentioned, with a requust that the manager would accept a gold watch and chain, which was then aud there handed over to him, in one of the jeweler's boxes usually given in when u watch is purchased. Much too well bred to "look a gift horse in the mouth,"" tbe complimented manager did not open thelwx wbile briefly and even eloquently returning thanks. The party tbeu partook of something a tri tie stronger than water, after which, the pleased and always pleasant manager thought the time had arrived when he might gratify his very natural curiosity by lookiug at the beautiful presentation watch for which he had to thank tho kindness of his fricuds. Jle opened the' box, and law his own watch! He emphatically exclaimed, ''b'oM! this it by wsfh."'
