FRIDAY MOKNINC It'LY 23 9- See Ftrt mid Fourth Page for Interesting Reading Matter. " 3TThc Republicans and the Banks Americana of Massachusetts' bawe united in a call fur a State Convention, to meet at Worcester an the 9th of September. The call is addressed to "the legal voters of Massachusetts who arc opposed to the present corrupt national administration, and to the further extension of the clave power; and who arc in favor of the general polier of the present State administration." ' . ' B5k.The Court at Burksville, Ky., recently gave a verdict against the owner of a distillery for the value of a negro man, for having Sold the black a jug of whisky, on which the slave lccame intoxicated, and was in consequence drowned yv attempting to swim on horse back, a swollen creek. The accident was proven to have occurred from the drunken fully and mismanagement of the slave. There is a law of the State which makes the seller of liquor to a slave liable for all the consequences from the use of the liquor by the negro. This verdict it is thought, will have an important influence in arresting the sale of whisky to slaves. We are glad to notice a tendency on the part of the young men of the various large - k- w '"'"- themselves into "sporting ciuos. oamcs of "Cricket," ßase EaH with row and sail boat regattas, arc attracting great attention und much enthusiasm. Nothing can be more beneficial to the physical and mental man, than to engage heartily in "out door ?ports." The boy of the quickest parts in the school room, is not generally found to be unusually slow on the play-ground. It requires a healthy body to preserve a healthy mind, and exercise is absolutely essential to keep a healthy body. BgAThe Princeton Convention, was a
very harmonious one. Judge Niblack was nominated on the first ballot, there being only four votes in opposition, and those were from "Warrick county, for Judge Law. The Cincinnati .Platform was re-adopted, with some unmeaning addenda. Judge Niblack made a speech, accepting the nomination; making suitable acknowl edgements for the honor, end pledging himself to beat Judtre Hovev. if he could. Ho wa followed by Mr. Denby, of the Custom House, who glorified Lecomptonism and Mr. Buchanan. He was succeeded bv Mr. McDouald, the 8th of January candi date for Attorney General of the State. The Convention passed a resolution rec ommending M. F. Burke, Esq., of Washing ton, Daviess county, as a candidate for the oßice of Circuit J udge. The little of Lecomptouism spread abroad in her bor ders, has not impaired her products this season, and her harvests of the fruits of the earth, will be a3 sound as the crop of good principles which she will display in October. The Failure of the Ocean Telegraph.
The project of laying an ocean telegraph- ' ic cable on which so many brilliant hopes I have been fed, has proved a failure. It has been a beautiful dream sublime in conception, beneficient in design, but it has proved impracticable. The only hope of accom plishing the magnificent scheme now left, is the suggestion to take the w ire to the Farce slaud, to the North of Scotland, thence to celand and (j recnland, and across to the main and, and down the coast of Labrador to the regions ot civilization. Rut there arc so many obstacles in the climate and condition of the country as to render this project for permanent aud regular use, as hopeless as that across the ocean. Cut we presume that the idea of a telegraphic communication between the two continents will not be abandoned - till this' northern way has been tried. It would require the submcrrrino; of o o no grater length of cable than is now suc cessfully worked under the sea. The previous intelligence from the tele graphic Cejt, told us that the Niagara had been met not far west of the point at which the two steamers were to join their portions of the cable, and start each for its own laud, and htr officers stated that they bad a. 1 1 . 1 . mei very oaa weainer, the Agamemnon had sutfered terribly, being at one time in great danger of sinking, the cable had been loosened from its bed on that vessel bv the pitching of tlie sea, the coal had been tum bled out of its place and was thrown vio lently about, and fears for the soundness of the cable were entertained. The Niagara had suffered little, and the cable had not been displaced or injured so far as known. Such a tumbling us the wirs must have got on the Agamemnon was quite well adapted to destroying its already doubtful power of conducting an electric current three thousand miles. Consequently, when the junction was made and the paying out begun, there was little to astonish anybody in the breaking of the line before the vessels had gone ten miles. It did break iu a little time. The vessels came together again, respliced and started on a second expedition. This time some forty miles had been run out, when communication ceased. After communication ccaseJ, the Niagara allowed swing to the cable, and in addition a strain of four tuns was atml ed to tl a bral es. Although blowing fmh, the cable held her an hour, when a sudden pitch of the sea snapped the cable and the Niagara uore away lor IJueenstown. nnou'.u nothing be heard of the Agamem non, the Niagara, after coaling, will proceed to mul ocean, having still thirteen hundred miles of the cable. It is conjectured that the Agamemnon bad not delivered the arranged quantity of coil at the time or the failure, and was awaiting the Niagara. After the cxiieriencc in the trials already made, thera is little faith in the final success of the undertaking. COBMISSION MERCHANTS. n a. vjULF.f, Co., OLn nsJL TAIJhlMltD W1IARF1IUAT.
