A Ivin Adams, Memphis to Louisville; Ivockt t, I'itteburg to St. Paul; , . John Briggs, Louisville to lTintnille. , ' The weather continues sultry. On Tuesday night we had a very hard storm and a large quantity of water fell. But the atmosphere yesterday did not seem to be much cooled by it. The river is rising a little. The Greenville came down yesterday morning with an excellent load. Her manifest is as follows: 45 hhds tobacco, 23 casks bacon, J. S. Mitchell & Co.; 7 bdls leather, Chas. Babcock; 41 do, 33 hhds tobacco, 1 cask bacon, I. A. Crane; 14 hhds tobacco, R. S. Howard; 13 do, to ship to Louisville for boat; 1 lot of moving plunder, with owner; 5 boxes manufactured tobacco, owner; 15 passengers. The Greenville reports the times about as usual up Green River; she has had fine success this spring and summer, and we have no doubt her owners have realized handsome profits. She leaves this evening.— Shippers must try and have their freight on hand in time. The Rocket, bound for the Upper Mississipi, lay at our wharf some time yesterday, putting off freight. Besides being loaded down to the guards, she had three barges in tow, all equally well loaded. The splendid steamer Alvin Adams went up yesterday about 4 o'clock, with a very good trip. The sudden rise in the Mississippi, at St. Louis seems to have taken everybody by surprise. The <Democrat> says it has hardly been paralelled [sic]. The river commenced to swell on Saturday, shortly after the midday hour, and at 6 P. M. on Sunday. nearly 30 hours having elapsed, it had risen three feet. In the 24 hours ending at 6 P. M. yesterday, it rose three feet more. Thus, in less than 50 hours, the river has risen 72 inches.— The current in the Missouri was so strong that the S. L. McGill, which had a good cargo, was unable to proceed and was forced to lay up at Arrow Rock. The river came to a stand at Cincinnati on Monday, having raised, in all 3 1/2 feet. The steamer, Silver Star, arrived yesterday morning, and went on down the river. She will soon resume her position as mail boat between this place and Paducah. The Nashville <Gazette>, of the 17th says that the Rock City, in passing the railroad bridge, came in contact with one of the guy ropes and knocked down her chimneys. The St. Louis <Republican>, says that Capt. Brierly intends making an excursion with his beautiful steamer, the Ben Lewis, starting from that place on the 12th of August. Here is a fine chance for those who are anxious to find a cool spot. Everything has been arranged to make the trip one to be remembered, and those who have a couple of weeks to spare and the money to foot the bill, will find no more pleasant way of spending it than on an excursion of this kind. By the way, what has become of our Mammoth Cave excursionists? A CAVE IN.—Captain Nash, of the steamer Alice Vivian, informs the Natchez <Free Trader>, that on Monday week, about noon, there was a "cave in" at Grand Gulf, Mis sissippi, by which a two story brick building fell into the warer and was totally lost. The building was occupied as a storage house by the Grand Gulf and Port Gibson Railroad. The goods, wares and merchandise in this building were of great value, and by extraordinary exertions were saved. No lives were lost. ——>The Mississippi rose at St. Louis from Saturday night to Monday morning at the rate of an inch an hour. There had been heavy rains on the Missouri and Upper Mississippi. ———<>——— Our ludlan Dlfficultlee.
