But your statements in reference to Dr.

Dr. Daily and the r j .u. rf:: a ,o and opponents, say they are anxious for an investigation, and we nope tncy an or eincere, as we certainly think the educational t miercsw Ol me wnoie ciaie urgenuy uc mand that the truth should be known. Wc understand that a resolution was introduced at the meeting of me Alumni, siaixng inai jusucc 10 ut. Daily and the interests of the University imperatively demanded an immediate inves-I ligation, ine oojeci oz me resoiuuon as simply an expression of the opinion of thc mosi inieresicu irienas oi me msuiuuon; but through the open, personal efforts of the A IA A - .1 - - 1- - " A I ? . i " 1 A: I Doctor, and the loud remonstrances of bis friends, thc resolution was defeated by one vote. Your correspondent states that the charges against the Doctor find no credence among the students and thc people of I Bloomington, who have thc most intimate intercourse with him and know him best. But we are informed that thc cane presented to the Doctor as coining rom the students, 03 a token of regard and affection, was the work of but forty or fifty of them, and that a large number knew nothing of the testi monial until it was made public. And it is stated to us, on reliable authority, that there is a large portion of the citizens of Bloom ington, who believe thc Doctor unworthy of his position; and as a convincing proof of this, a short time since, when a town meet ing was called to assist in sustaining him in his place, his friends were unable to pass resolutions in his favor. iiut whether these things are true or false, it matters little in the investigation of the cnarges. i ue cnarges are cenamiy grae enough to demand thc attention of the Board of Trustees, and the people of the State, to whom the University belongs. They have undoubtedly gained credence with a great many of the prominent men of the State, men high in position, of good schol arship, and undoubted moral character. The public papers have heralded the charges all over the country. Thc Doctor is said to be incompetent for the Presidency, on account of his inadequate education he has been charged with the most bare-faced plagiarism, and the evidence on this point is strong against him for several years, but more especially during the last, he lias been charged with the most flagrant viola- j tions of morality. These charges are before the public; and, worse than that, many honest and candid people believe them to be true. "We do not undertake to decide uion his guilt or innocence, but we do think it the duty of public journalists, who desire the educational interests of thc State ta be zealously fostered, to ask that these matH-rs be carefully investigated aud determined. In our educational system, what is more desirable than that thc fouutain head should be pure? The State University has been made the crowning point of our State system of education, and if such clugcs mny Lc preferred against its members, aud gain such public credence, what can we hope for the cause in its lower ramifications? The University is now in a highly prosperous condition, but wc cannot cspect it long to continue so, uultss these charges arc rufutcd, or the Dr. removed- The faculty" is an able ouc: Prof. Ballantiuc as a classical cholar, an able divine, and a Christian man, has a high character ; Prof. Wylie is perfectly at home in the Natural Sciences ; and his pu pils of the University, of thc hut twenty years, who are so closely endeared to him, would not permit thf slightest breath of suspicion to rest upon his character; Prof. Kirk wood, as a Mathematician aud a teacher, has very few equal3 in the country, and uo - svperiori iu this State ; Prof. Uryant's IcTil abilities are known to the profession all over the State ; Prof. Wocdburu is a good scholar, a successful teacher, and a worthy man ; Dr. Daily is a man of undoubted en ergy and influence; and if these suspicions can be removed from his character as a moral man and a scholar, we can congratu late ourselves upon a future of great pros perity and usefulness for the University Wc believe that the rising generation of young men, whose minds and characters arc in a great degree to be moulded by the morb . . . . .... i- : al education they receive a our uitc ,m versity, imperatively demand a rrcsiueni tbere rboic mural character shall be above

Iu New Orleans rivat white lulior has driven or frightened black labor, in a great meas ure, from its chief employments as draymen, long shore men and.mechanics. In the Carolinas thc white mechanics re cently formed a Combination to drive the slaves from their brauches of labor. In Baltimore, last week, the w hite caulkers formed a combination and resolved that no black man, free or slave should be allowed to work ut their business. Thcr resolved thc labor should be kept for white hands. Consequently every negro caulker was driven from the ship yards. by force. It seems the white association had power to arrest all business and finally to bring the master workmen to terms. One concern was allowed to retain their own negroes at work on condition of taking twelve white caulkers into their vurd. Hut thc blacks were permitted to work only upon a stipu lation they should take out :i lice use from the president of the white caulkers association, and become subject to its regulations. Here is a forced process of cmam-ipatiou at wprk. One that is to entail ruin on the master and misery on the slave. It is a Step in the progress to anarchy that makes thc decline iu the power of thc law in large cities to protect the most incontestiblc rights of citizens from thc usurpations of mob rule. t&T The Presidents party is loud in its condemnation of thc Hon. J. O. Davis, for seeking a re-election in thc 7th disttict, after his repeated pledges in the canvass of 1850, tlial he wouM not again be a candidate. Hut the same p)ers are ' upporting the aspirations of Bill English, who, in both the two last canvasses promised, if re-elected, he would, at the expiration of his term, give way to some worthy man; he is now fur the third time violating these pledges, and is encouraged iu his acts of bad faith, by those who abuse Davis for a single act of the kind. j IfeBT A new poem, bv A illiam Allan But- - , , uthor of "Nothin" to Wear," is announccd. Hon. Jeff. Daria. V

lion. Jeff. Davis is in Maine, Vnl it is said ! he will pass the summer in New England. He is the object or ttwjyj attention irom ail ; o parties wherever he cocs at the North. At j " m Portland he received a serenade, and in re turn for thc compliment, made ajpeechglowng with patriotic and Union sentiments. Theit; is a most remarkable revolution in the views of this gentleman, who has heretofore been one .of the ultra Southern fire eaters and disuuionists. The New Orleans DtU i paper more violeut in its doctrines than the Charleston .Vt-rcwry has been supposed to be the orgau of his scntimcuts. Although we mav not understand the reasons or mo tive for the thange, it will -be hailed as a harbinger of peace, and the promise of an end to scctiouai strife. If Mr. Davis can emancipate himself from the shackles of ex treme Southern prejudices, and adopt broud, statesmanlike, national views, he has the genius aud force of character to make himself one of thc brightest Statesman in thc political horizon. . A truly national man from the South would be more admired and petted at thc North than his equal from any other section of thc Cnion, from thc novelty of the character. In his Portland speech, after describing in very succinct terms thc rich political legstcy bequeathed to us in the Union of the States and thc Constitution, he says: Shall we preserve and transmit it to pos terity! Yes, yes, thc heart respotuls; aud the judgment answers, thc ta.k is easily performed. It but requires that each fhouM attend to that which most concerns him, and on which alone he lias rightful power to decide and to act ; that each f houid adhere to the terms of a written compact, and that all should co-operate for that which in- - tercst, dutv and honor demand. For thc general affairs of our country, Itoth foreign and dome.-tic, we have a national legislature. liepresentativcs and Senators arc chosen by districts and by States, but their nets affect the whole country, and their obligation ore to thc whole people. He who, holding cither seat, would confine his investigations to the mere interests of his immediate constituents would 1c derelict to his plain duty; aud he who would legislate in hostility to any section would 1 morally unfit for the station, and surely an unsafe depositary, if not a treacherous guardian, of the inheritance with whieh. we are blessed. No one, more than, mywlf, recognizes thc binding force of w allegiance which the citizen owes to i the State of his citizenship; but that State W-ing-n party to our compact, a tnemfier of our Union, feality to the federal constitution id uot in oposition to, but Hows from thc allegiance due to one of thc United States. Washington was not less a Virginian when he commanded at Boston; nor did Gates, or Greene weaken the lands which bound them to their several States by their campaigns in the South. - In proportion as a citizen loves his own State will hc strive to honor by preserving her name and her lame free from the tarnish of having failed to olserve her obligations, and to fulfil her duties to her sister States. Each pagcof our history is illustrated by thc names and the deeds of those who have well understood and discharged thc obligation. Have we so degenerated that we can no longer emulate their virtues? Have the purposes fir which our Union was formed lost their value? - Has patriotism ceased to be a virtue, and is narrow sectionalism no longer to 1 counted a crime? Shall the North not rejoice that the progress of agriculture in thc South has giveu to her great staple the Controlling influence of the commerce of the world, mid put manufacturing nations under bonds t keep the peace with the United States? Shall the South not exult in thc fact that the industry and persevering intelligente of thc North has placed her mechanical skill in thc front rank of thc civilized world that our mother count)', whose haughty Minister some eighty odd yearsagu, declared that not a hol-nail should le made in the colonies, which are now the United States, was brought some four years ago to recognize our pre-eminence by sending a commission to examine our workshops and our machinery, to perfect 'their own manufacture of the arms requisite for their defence? Do not our winde, jcoplc, interior aud seaboard, North, S mill, Kast and West, alike feel proud of the hardihood, tin? enterprise, the skill, and lhe courage of the Yankee sailor, w ho has Ixtrnc our tlag as the ocean bears its foam, and caused the name and thc character of the Uuited States to lie, known and respected wherever there is wealth enough to woo commerce, and intelligence enough to honor merit? So long as we preserve and appreciate the achievements of JellVrsun and Adams, of Franklin and Madison, of Hamilton and Hancock, and of Rutledge, men who lalored for the whole country, and lived for mankind, w e an not sink to the petty strife which would sap the foundation ami -destroy thc political fabric our fathers erected and lequeathed a an inheritance to our posterity forever. Since the formation of the constitution, a vxst detention of territory, and thc varied ndat ion arising therefrom, have presented problems which could not have ln.cn loreseen. It i just cause for admiration, even wonder, that thc provisions of the fundamen tal law flionid have been ftund no fully adequate to all the wants of government, new in its organization, and new iu many of the principles on which it was founded. " Whatever fears may have once existed as to the consequence of territorial expansion must give way before the evidence which the past affords. If at some future time, wheu I am mingled with tho dust, and the arm of my infant son has lx n nerved for dee ds of manhood, the storm , of war should hur.-t upon your city, I feel that relying um Lis inheriting the iustincts of his ancestors anjdiuiuc, I may pledge him in that perilous hour to stand by your side in the defence of your heartht ues, and in maintaining the honor of a flag whose constellation, though torn smoked in many a battle by sea and by land, has never U eu stained by di.-honor, and will, I trust, forever fly as free as thc breeze which unfolds it. 52?" The Convention at (Ireensburg, ehdorsed the course of Gen. J. B. Foley, as a representative from that district. As he voted fr and against the Lecompton swindle, his constituents are left in doubt whether it was the Lit onipton vote, or the antiLecompton'Totc that met the approbation of the convention ; or whether it split him, and the Lccomptonites swallowed one side, and the anties the other.
